The Texas Renaissance Festival located northwest of Houston near Plantersville in Grimes County is one of the most successful Renaissancethemed festivals in the nation, and is celebrating its 38th anniversary this season with its opening Oct.6. In the course of eight themed weekends, starting with a German Oktoberfest and ending with a Celtic Christmas, the festival offers quality entertainment, food, games, rides and unique shopping from hundreds of vendors across the 55-acre village, to more than 500,000 visitors. More than 3,000 costumed characters speaking the tongue of lords, ladies, pauper sand wenches, roam the grounds, giving festival visitors a feel for what it might have been like back in the days of the Renaissance. For those who want to be a part of the experience, daily costume rental is available outside the gate. Five-hundred performers on 17 stages rotate throughout the day. Demonstrations, musical acts and shows range from jugglers and magicians to crowd favorite Ded Bob Show and full-contact jousting in an arena that holds 10,000 people. And bringing the festival to a close every night with a bang and a boom an awesome fireworks display. A favorite area for kids is Sherwood Forest, with midway games of skill and chance, as well as humanpowered rides ranging in

Main Street Market supports charities

n Annual event gathers diverse retailers in single spot for shoppers.
By Dan Wallach

Main Street Market, a shopping extravaganza sponsored by the Junior League of Beaumont, returns this year to the Beaumont Civic Center, 801 Main St., from Nov. 29 through Dec. 2. The market is the leagues main fundraiser for the year, providing a net income of $55,000 to $75,000 for its community projects and programs during the rest of the year. Its also an opportunity for shoppers to look at the wares of perhaps 100 vendors from across the United States and from international sources as well, said Stephanie Vanskike, 2012-2013 Junior League president. Shoppers can browse among apparel, jewelry and a wide range of gifts for Christmas that otherwise would be difficult to find in one place in Beaumont, Vanskike said. Tickets to the event are

$5 and that allows allweekend access, she said. Vendors pay to be in the show. Local businesses including Cowboy Harley Davidson and Universal Travel will also make raffle prizes available to the league at a discount to generate additional income.

Exclusive raffles
Chances at the Harley Davidson motorcycle cost $100 per ticket with a limit of 500 tickets. That means each ticket has a one-in-500 chance of winning. Universal Travels cruise for four is priced at $50 per ticket, also with a cap of 500 tickets. Main Street Market has drawn anywhere from 3,000 to about 5,500 people per year for each of the 10 years or so the league has sponsored the event, Vanskike said. The market takes over the main arena of the Civic Center and the side rooms are used for related events such as a childrens workshop and a style show. Its a great place to do your Christmas shopping, she said. Projects that get their

funding from the event are the Community Assistance Fund, which benefits nonprofit agencies in Beaumont; the Beaumont Childrens Museum; and Done in a Day. The Junior League assists with projects that last one or two days, such as the Art Museum of Southeast Texas Family Art Days, Beaumont Childrens Museums presentation with Stuffee, CASAs Annual Kids Carnival and Some Other Places Soup Kitchen. The Junior League also sponsors a Young Women Building Better Communities scholarship and helps with a summer camp and teaching healthy eating for children.
