(

),is a role-playing video gamedeveloped and published by Atlus for  Sony's PlayStation 2, and chronologically the fifth installment in the
series.
Persona 4
was released in Japan in July2008, North America in December 2008, and Europe inMarch 2009. It features a weather forecast system withevents happening on foggy days to replace the moonphase system implemented in the previous games.Instead of the city locales of previous games in theseries,
Persona 4
takes place in a fictional Japanesecountryside and is indirectly related to both
(in terms of gameplay, storyand production) and the
duology (in terms of Shadow selves and confronting them to awakenPersona). The player-named main protagonist is a high-school student who moved into the countryside from thecity for a year. During his year-long stay, he becomesinvolved in investigating mysterious murders whileharnessing the power of summoning Persona. The release of the game in Japan was alsoaccompanied with retail merchandise revolving aroundthe game's theme such as character costumes andaccessories. The North American package of the gamewas released with a CD with selected music from thegame, and, unlike
Persona 3
, the European packagealso contained a soundtrack CD. The music wascomposed byShōji Meguro, with vocals by ShihokoHirata who sang the theme song "Pursuing My TrueSelf". The game was positively received by critics, and itcontinues to be promoted by Atlus through releases inother media such as adaptation inmangaandanime,  followed by an enhanced remake, a fighting game sequel, and side stories in the forms of a mangaand light novel.
