Current historical writings dealingwith matters related to the Third Reichpaint a bleak picture. This applies espe-cially to writings that deal with the Jewishethnic group. To this day there are stillaccounts of the Jewish emigration thatdepict it as some kind of clandestine opera-tion – as if the Jews who wished to leaveGermany had to sneak over the borders inde
ance of the German authorities, leaving all their possessionsand wealth behind. The truth is that the emigration was welcomed by theGerman authorities, and frequently occurred under a constantlyincreasing pressure. Emigration was not some kind of wild
ight, but rather a lawfully determined and regulated matter.Weckert’s booklet elucidates the emigration process in law andpolicy, thereby augmenting the traditionally received picture of Jewish emigration from Germany.German and Jewish authorities worked closely together onthis emigration. Jews interested in emigrating received detailedadvice and offers of help from both sides. The accounts of Jews
eeing Germany in secret by night across some border are unten-able. On the contrary, the German government was interested ingetting rid of its Jews. It would have been senseless to preventsuch an emigration.
