February 10, 2012Dear Colleagues:
Thank you for agreeing to participate in Clean Water America Alliance’s “One Water” workshop on
February 10,
2012, in Washington, D.C. We’re including an agenda
, a collection of sharedperspectives on integrated water resource management, and contact information of participants.Water comes and goes in many shapes and sizes and so do its management strategies. We all knowwater is local and that good decisions tend to be based on local conditions taking into account currentand future needs of communities and ecosystems most affected by the decisions. Each of us also
recognizes the power and potential of “integrated and holistic” approaches within individual watersheds
and also broader ecosystems and regions, as appropriate. There is growing interest in regional and
national principles, or vision statements, on water. Most touch on “integrated and sustainable
water
resources management,” which can be defined in many ways on many levels but each version strives
for greater coordination among diverse interests, stakeholders, and decision makers, recognizing thatwater quantity and quality, whether above or below ground, depend on multi-faceted collaborations. The mission of Clean Water America Alliance is to unite people and policy for water sustainability andthat means bringing together leaders from different regions, sectors, disciplines, and perspectives tochange for the better how we view, value, and manage water. That is why the Alliance held a series of
national dialogues, culminating in a November 2010 report, “Managing One Water”. That is also why
we are optimistic that leaders from federal, state, and local levels, with public, private andnongovernmental experience, can agree to work together, forming various networks, to shape researchand policy priorities and craft new tools and strategies to sustain our most precious liquid asset. The attached compilation of perspectives reveals the unity of our missions towards integrated water management. It is our hope that this meeting will be a start toward signing a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for increased communication, greater coordination of resources, and a stronger voice for One Water Management.Sincerely,Ben GrumblesPresidentClean Water America Alliance
