Update on State AssessmentResults for 2011-12
Cecilia Oakeley, Ph.D.Executive Director Evaluation & Accountability Ann Smisko, Ph.D.Chief Academic Officer Teaching & Learning

STAAR Grades 3-8 Results Explanation
§
TEA will not provide performance standards untilJanuary 2013.
§
When setting performance standards, scale scoresare calculated which is a conversion of the raw scoreonto a scale that takes into account the
difficulty

level
of the specific set of questions used on a test in anygiven year.
§
The average number of items correct (raw scores)were provided at the state and district level.
§
The information provided is designed to help theBoard understand where the district stands relative tothe State.
3
2011-12 was the first year of the 5
th
statewide assessment of student knowledge (TABS, TEAMS, TAAS, TAKS, STAAR)The state of Texas has been testing students since 1979-80 with the first test of students in 3, 5, and 9
th
grades reading, writing and math knowledgeThe first Graduation testing requirement began with the Class of 1987.As the state did during the transition from TAAS to TAKS, new State accountability ratings were not released – district and campus ratings were held over from2010-11 –
 {so these results don’t “count” for the district (but they do for HS students)}
The new testing program continues the testing in grades 3 – 8 as before (reading, math science, social studies) --But radically changes the HS exams from “grade level exams” (9
th
, 10
th
and 11
th
) to End of Course exams for 12 courses, such as English I, Algebra, Geometry,Chemistry Physics, World Geography, etc.Because the STAAR exams are designed to be vertically aligned, the state set passing standards on the HS EOC exams first and is now working to align thepassing standards on the grades 3- 8 exams with the EOCs.So we don’t yet have the cut scores on grades 3 - 8 exams – those will be set in November and the scored exams are expected to be available in January. Instead, the state has provided
average number of items correct
in order to provide comparison data for schools. We do however have the performance or passing standards for the HS End of Course exams that were taken by last years’ 9
th
graders ( 10
th
and 11
th
graderscontinue in the TAKS program as their HS graduation exam requirement). In this presentation, you will see 3 sets of district-level data that majority of our kids took: Grades 3 – 8 -- average number of items correct, HS both EOC andTAKS, and also the ACT and SAT results for the district.
