Research Statement
I am interested in continuing my research in the field of water resources and broader environmentalanalysis, especially within the scope of GIS and remote sensing. My Masters and PhD theses cover thefollowing topics:
Master Thesis
Land use maps were proposed for the Entre-Ribeiros Basin (Brazil), for 1975, 1989, and 2008, using remotesensing techniques of Principal Component Analysis and Tasseled Cap transformation. Based on local data, the irrigation efficiency in the basin was evaluated: the demand, use, and loss of water in the system. Therelation between the irrigation results and regionalized hydrological data and the land use maps was assessed, and the impact on the water cycle and the environment was estimated. The economic, environment, and socialprocesses were discussed regarding these impacts.
PhD Thesis (in progress)
The aim of my thesis is to propose screening methodologies to incorporate hydrogeological processes intopractical contexts of environmental and water resource policies. The discussion begins with theepistemological and interdisciplinary aspects of aquifer recharge. Therefore, the proposed methodologies arepresented and then applied in case studies of the Paracatu River Basin in Brazil. These methodologies areadapted to different scales of analysis and to the specific availability of environmental data. The methodologies are as follows:
Rapid Assessment of Aquifer Recharge Areas:
A structured protocol for rapid environmental assessment of recharge area safety. The obtained products involve qualitative and quantitative evaluation through textual andcartographic descriptions, complemented by rapid assessment weighted checklists.
Probable Recharge Zone Delimitation and Environmental Impact Assessment:
The delimitation method isbased on stratigraphy, soils, geo-environmental domains, and hydrogeology. Combining the recharge zonemap with land use maps obtained by remote sensing, the recharge zones occupation trend, and itsenvironmental impact are evaluated.
Cartographic Methodology for delimitation and characterization of Aquifer Recharge Favorability:
Thedelimitation is based on hydrogeological inference of areas uphill from springs using a kriging interpolationplane of the altimetry of the springs. The characterization of recharge favorability is based on weightedattributes regarding lithostratigraphy, geomorphology, soil, and climatic cartographic bases.
Estimation of Flow Components by Recursive Filters:
The base flow, interflow, and quick flow of nested basinsare estimated with recursive signal filters, and preliminarily stationary analysis and multivariate lag filling areapplied to the flow data. The recursive filters are calibrated with regards to (a) the runoff influence and (b) theinflection of the recession curve along the dry season. Filters are improved with a logic constraint that limits thewater flow overestimation within each algorithm iteration.
Spatial Modeling of the Water Systems with Partial Least Squares:
The model is applied to investigate thespatial relations between the environmental attributes of nested basins and their respective total flow, quickflow, interflow, and base flow. The results of the regressions provide indications of the role of eachenvironmental attribute in the hydrological and hydrogeological processes. The cartographic products arespecific flow map obtained by the weighted overlay of the statistical model results. The maps also evaluate theuncertainty of the prediction and the hypothesis of regional groundwater flows. The model performs flowregionalization where there is no gauge station.
