This guide outlines how Liberal Democrats are working as part of the CoalitionGovernment to give people a fair deal. It contains both our key achievementsand some policies we hope to deliver in the future. As the governments in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have separatepowers in many areas, this guide shows achievements within the remit of theUK Government only. The Scottish and Welsh Liberal Democrats publish theirown policies on devolved matters.Sources used in this guide include the Office for National Statistics, the Houseof Commons Library and the Institute for Fiscal Studies. Building a more liberal Britain
At the 2010 General Election, Liberal Democratshad four priorities: making taxes fairer; building asustainable and balanced economy; giving everychild a fair start in life; and reforming government.
I’m
immensely proud that Liberal Democrats are now delivering onthese key priorities as part of the Coalition Government.
We’ve given a £550 tax cut to 21 million people and g
uaranteed thelargest ever cash increase in the state pension. Our Pupil Premium is transforming the lives of disadvantagedchildren and our Youth Contract is giving half a million youngunemployed the chance to earn or learn. We have ambitious plans to cut carbon emissions and slash energybills through our Green Deal, which gives people loans to insulatetheir homes. And our Freedoms Act has reclaimed the civil libertiesthat Labour took from us.These are all things Liberal Democrats have campaigned on for yearsand none of which would happen without us being in Government.
Of course we aren’t able to do everything we want –
we are, after all,in coalition with the Conservatives and facing unprecedentedeconomic challenges. But we are making a real
difference to people’slives as we continue to build a more liberal Britain. That’s something
we can all be proud of.Nick Clegg MPLeader of the Liberal Democrats and Deputy Prime Minister
