Subject: list of applicants for interviews
Jim and Sylvia,
Here is the list of eight applicants from Packages 1 and 2 that the Recruiting Committee wants to invite to College
Station for interviewing:

From Package 1:
Holmes, James
From Package 2:

The Recruiting Committee also will interview these two overseas applicants by telephone:
(Package 1)
(Package 2)

The Recruiting Committee would like to schedule these interviews on Friday, March 4. With this plan, interviewees
travel to College Station on Thursday, stay overnight, interview on Friday, and leave College Station on Saturday. They
need hotel rooms on Thursday night, March 3 and Friday night, March 4. Thursday night and Friday night will be social
events. Our neuroscience graduate students will participate in these social events and in daytime hosting of
interviewees.

The Recruiting Committee prefers to conduct interviewing on days different from the days when the Psychology
Department is interviewing. Different interviewing days for Neuroscience and Psychology will improve the availability of
Psychology faculty members for interviewing Neuroscience applicants.

Interviewees will make their own travel arrangements. TAMIN will provide up to a certain amount to defray the cost of
travel. Jim, what is that amount? You mentioned $600 as the upper limit of travel reimbursement last year.

Package 3 contains applications that Psychology forwarded to Neuroscience. The Recruiting Committee still is
evaluating those applications. We promptly will finish reviewing Package 3. Interviews coming from Package 3 might
interview on March 7 along with the Psychology Department interviewing activities.

The goal of the Recruiting Committee for Friday, February 11 is to send invitations to interview to the eight applicants
listed above. The content of those invitations depends on decisions by Jim. We will interview the two overseas
applicants later in February. I will send information to FNS faculty members about our interviewees so FNS faculty
members can indicate to the Recruiting Committee their interest in particular interviewees.

[First Name],
Thanks for applying to the Interdisciplinary Graduate Program in Neuroscience (IGPN) at the Texas A&M Institute for
Neuroscience. The IPGN invites you to come to College Station, Texas, for an interview on Friday, March 4.

Your interview schedule will occupy the whole day on Friday, March 4. The IGPN will provide hotel accommodations for
you on Thursday night, March 3 and Friday night, March 4. You will make your own travel arrangements to and from
College Station. The IGPN will defray your cost of travel up to $600.

If you are not able to interview with the IGPN on Friday, March 4, would you please let me know the other days in March
when you cannot interview. Knowing the dates in March when you are not available will allow me to schedule an
alternate day for your interview.

Thanks for your interest in the IGPN at TAMIN. And best wishes for your education, research, and career plans!

Questions for Jim:
1. Is Friday, March 4 agreeable to you as the interview day?
2. What is the upper limit of travel reimbursement?
3. Can the Recruiting Committee ask for help from our neuroscience graduate students for hosting our visiting
applicants?

Thanks.

Jim,
The applications that Psychology sent to Neuroscience should generate additional interviews and Heep Fellowship
candidates. The Recruiting Committee will finish evaluating these applications very soon. Those seven applications
might take our College Station interview number as high as fifteen.

I will ask Farida about the HSC contribution to NRSC recruiting. Some of the applicants on the interview list have
mentioned HSC faculty as potential research mentors. I do not recall any NRSC applicants that otherwise mentioned a
bias towards the HSC.

I will ask Farida about applicants to the HSC that might be suitable for admission through the HSC-side of the NRSC.

Gregg: In looking over the stats., it looks like the committee has selected a strong group of applicants.

My job, in part, is to worry about hitting our targets (number of admits; Heep Fellows; distribution x
HSC/TAMU). Given these concerns, I have a couple worries:

It looks like we might have 3 potential Heep fellows on your list. Given our hit-rate, we could use a couple
more.

From past experience, my guess is that you can expect an overall hit rate of about 60%.

Are there applicants to the NRSC program who want to enter via the HSC?
