Thecft;ciencyofdrychemicalpowderforextinguishmentsisgovernedbyitsphysicalpropertiesandchemicalcomposition.Particlesizeofthepowderisanimportantcharacteristicwhichdeterminesitsfireknockdownpt-opcrtiesandkeepingqualitieswhenusedinextinguishers.Asveryfineparticlearecarriedawaywithflamedraft,fineparticleshavebetterfireknockdownpropertiesbutcannotbeeasilyprojectedout,thecoarseparticlesarealsoallowedtoachievebetterballasticproperties.Thereforefineandcoarsepowderparticlemustbebalanceduhilemanufacturingthispowder.Thedrychemicalpowderisgenerallycomposedofbasicallysodiumbicarbonate,potassiumbicarbonate,potassiumchloride,etc,withadditivestomakeitwaterrepellant,freeflowingandconfbrmingtovariousrequirementsofthisstandard.Whileselectingthevariousrawmaterialsforthemanufactureotthisdrychemicalpowder,Itshallbeensuredthatthesearcnon-toxic,non-corrosive,non-abrasiveandclcctrical]ynon-conductive.Inthefollowingsituations,theapplicationofdrypowdercoveredinthisstandardshouldnotbeconsideredsatisfactory:a)Firesinvolvingchemicalscontainingtheirownoxygensupplysuchascellulosenitrate,etc;b)Firesinvolvingradio-activemetalssuchasradiumuranium,polonium,etc;c)Areawhereresidualdepositsofthepowdermayadverselyaffectelectronicequipmentsordelicateelectricalrelays;andd)Fireinvolvingcombustiblemetalssuchasalkalimetals,magnesiumtitanium,zirconium,etc.ThisstandardisformulatedtoprovideguidanceregardingselectionofmaterialsandrequirementsinregardtothequalityofdrypowderusedforClassBandCfires.Thisrevisionincorporatesproceduresforparticlesizedis[ributiondcterrnination,hygroscopicity,moisturecontentandguidancenotesforuseofthispowder.Therequirementsforhygroscopicityandcaking,freeflowcharacteristics,foamcompatibilityandfireknockdownpropm-ticshavebeenmodifiedapartfromgeneralupdation.ThevarioustestsforClassBandCfiresincorporatedinthisstandardarebasedonthestudiesconductedattheDefenceInstituteofFireResearch,NewDelhiandalsotakingintoconsiderationtheInternationalStandardssuchas1S0,EN,UL,etc.I-becompositionoftheCommitteeresponsiblefortheformulationofthisstandardisgivenatAnnexC.l;ortbcpurposeofdecidingwhetheraparticularrequirementofthisstandardiscompliedwith,thefinalvalueobsw\edorcalculated,expressingtheresultofatestoranalysis,shallberoundedoffinaccordancewithIS2:1960‘RLilesforroundingoffnumericalvalues

ThisstandardlaysdowntherequirementsofdrypowderforuseasextinguishingmediumforfightingClassBandCfires.2REFERENCESThestandardsgiveninAnnexAcontainprovisionswhichthroughreferenceinthistext,constituteprovisionsofthisstandard.Atthetimeofpublication,theeditionsindicatedwerevalid.AllstandardsaresubjecttorevisionandpartiestoagreementsbasedonthisstandardareencouragedtoinvestigatethepossibiIityofapplyingthemostrecenteditionsofthestandardsgivenatAnnexA.3TYPESThedrychemicalpowdershallbeordinaryorcompatiblewithalltypesoffoamscoveredunderIS4989(Parts1,2and3).Thetestrequirementsforfoamcompatibilityaregivenin4.11.4QUALITATIVEREQUIREMENTS4.1Thesampleofdrypowderfortestingshallbedrawninsuchamannerthatitrepresentstheentirestrataofpowderfromanycontainerandshallbetestedforpropertiesmentionedinthefollowingclauses.4.2

Theapparentdensityofthedrychemicalpowderwhendeterminedbythemethodgivenin4.2.1shallbe1+0.15.4.2.1Asampleof100+1gofthedrypowdershallbeplacedinaclean,dry250ml,stopperedglassgraduatedmeasuringcylinderhavinganapproximateheightof320mmandapproximateinternaldiameterof40mm.Securethestopperincylinder.Rotatethecylinderfortencompleterevolutions,slowlyatarateofapproximately1revolutionevery2s.Immediatelyafterthetenrevolutionshavebeencompleted,setthecylinderuprightonalevelsurfaceandallowthepowdertosettlefor180s.Readoffthevolumeoccupiedbythepowderandcalculatetheapparentdensityfromthefollowingequation:Apparentdensity=100/volumeofpowderinml4.3

Thedeclaredchemicalcontentofthedrychemicalpowderneednotincludeconstituentmakinguplessthan10percentbymassoftheextinguishingpowder.However,thechemicalcontentdeclaredshallcovermorethan90percentofbasicmaterialoftotalcompositionoftheextinguishingpowder.Theallowedtoleranceshallnotexceed+3percentofthedeclaredvalueforconstituents.4.4
