SITE SURVEY SUMMARY SHEET FOR SITE NO. J09CA077400 SITE NAME: Camp Tanforan. The site is now the Tanforan Park Shopping Center. LOCATION: The site is located in the city of San Bruno, San Mateo County, CA approximately 7 miles south of the city of San Francisco, CA.(Figure 1). SITE HISTORY: In April 1942, 118.00 leased acres were acquired from the Tanforan Company, Ltd. Additionally, in 17 April 1942 a no area license was acquired from the Southern Pacific Railroad Company. The total acreage acquired was 118.00.
The site was used as a Japanese internment center. The site was initially used by the Navy before it was transferred to the Army. The site was retransferred to the Department of the Navy on 1 March 1944. The 118.00 leased acres were terminated on 10 October 1946. The records regarding restoration provisions are not complete. The site is currently the Tanforan Park Shopping Center with major stores including Sears, J.C. Penney, and Firestone.

SITE VISIT: The site was visited by Mr. John Hoge and Mr. Brad Call of the Corps of Engineers, Sacramento District, on 13 December 1990. The site in question is now the Tanforan Park Shopping Center. The area has been completely developed. The site was inspected and no evidence of any HTW contamination was discovered. Mr. Hoge discussed the site by telephone with Mr. Dennis Franks of the San Mateo Co. Health Department, Hazardous Materials Division, Mr. Franks stated that when the shopping center was constructed, two (2) underground fuel storage tanks of unknown origin were removed. The county is unaware of any additional contamination on the site, CATEGORY OF HAZARDS: This site is classified as NOFA. DISTRICT POC: Mr. John Hoge, CESPK-ED-M-DI, 916-551-2147.

DEFENSE ENVIRONMENTAL RESTORATION PROGRAM FORMERLY USED DEFENSE SITES FINDINGS AND DETERMINATION OF ELIGIBILITY CAMP TANFORAN SAN BRUNO, CALIFORNIA PROJECT NO. J09CA077400 FINDINGS OF FACT 1. In April 1942, 118.00 leased acres were acquired from the Tanforan Company, Ltd. Additionally, in April 1942, a no area license was acquired from the Southern Pacific Railroad Company. The total acreage acquired was 118. 00 acres.
2. The site was known as Tanforan Race Track Reception Center, San Bruno; Tanforan Internment Camp; Tanforan Station, San Mateo County, CA. The site was used by the Navy before it was transferred to the Army. The site was used as a Japanese reception center. The records are not complete regarding the number of improvements on the site.
3. The 118.00 leased acres were retransferred to the Department of the Navy on 1 March 1944. The lease was terminated on 10 October 1946. The records are not complete regarding restoration provisions.

DETERMINATION Based on the foregoing Findings of Fact, the site has been determined to be formerly used by Department of Defense. It is therefore eligibke for the Defense Environmental Restoration Program Formerly Used Defense Sites established under 10 U.S.C. 2701 et seq.
