Matching of Horoscopes
Before proceeding further on matching of horoscopes, let us understand and adhere to a few tenets / caveats regarding the matching of horoscopes.
1. Matching of horoscopes should never be done to a couple after they are married. This is a direct breach of the rules of astrology as laid by the great Rsis and seers who propounded principles of astrology. 2. Out of the 8 types of marriage 1, Gandharva Vivaha, the 6th type which is by individually selecting ones own consort by strong will and conscience. Both the couple enter into matrimony by committing themselves to abide by the rules of matrimony. Gandharva Vivaha can be much compared to the marriages of current day when bride and groom decide among themselves to abide by the rules of matrimony. Matching of horoscope is not a precursor, hence the need doesnt arise in such cases. (Post marriage, the rule 1 applies) 3. Matching of horoscopes should be done with an impartial and unbiased perspective. Mis appropriation of astrological calculations for vested interests is the most heinous and a condemnable act attributed to an astrologer.

ASTROLOGICAL ANALYSIS First method is that of vedic astrological compatibility analysis. Of the important significations in vedic astrology is the tripod of Ascendant, Moon and Sun. This forms the basic fulcrum of a human life with Ascendant signifying the body, Moon the mind and Sun the soul. It would be an understatement to say that the vedic philosophy has given the institution of Marriage, the highest seat of practice and stage and has made it a confluence of all the three significations mentioned above. These three form the perfect vehicles for the 1st triad among the 4 purusharthas, Dharma, Artha and Kama. Dharma is performed and exercised by the body, Artha or the means of actualisation forms the mentality and Kama, the wish forms the soul. Desires and Wishes should purport towards the fulfilment of Moksha, the last purushartha, which is when the monies (artha) are used in

the most useful way towards the fulfilment of Karma (Dharma) by ones self. The same analogy is also applied in the matching of horoscopes according to the vedic system. Look for the ascendant of person A and person B, see in what signs they are and what the relationships of these signs are. Kona relationships are always considered best and welcome. Hence, if the ascendants are 1-5-9 from each other, it can be stated that they match well and best. The relation of 2 - 12 is not that good, as it makes both the ascendants face each other away from one another. 6/8 relationship is problematic and certainly not a good match at all as they lead to inimical consequences to one another. 3/11 relationship can work very well, especially if the ascendants are ruled by friends. It is good if both ascendants are in the same sign or in conjunction. Apart from conjunctions, kendra relationships of 1-4-7-10 may be difficult if the ascendants lords are inimical to one another. Otherwise Kendra relationship can be considered good too. There are some exceptions to this rule. If both signs are ruled by the same planet, it is considered good. Example: Libra and Taurus are in 6/8 relationship, but since Venus rules both signs, they do have something in common. After Lagna, next is the Moon followed by Sun. If ascendants in both the charts are matching, there would be symmetry among the couple, visual appeal among the couple and it would be a spectacle to watch as the couple would be a social embellishment. When the Moon is matching for the couple, both the mentalities, emotions and feelings are in sync adding love and emotional quotient to the mutual association and congress. If Sun is matching in both the charts, or is placed in harmonious signs from one another, it would impact immensely on the vision and outlook among the couple.

Vedic Astrology has always given importance to Moon first, followed by Lagna / Ascendant and then the Sun. The apparent explanation is mainly philosophical and anthropological and is beyond the scope of this article, but if seen purely from an astrological perspective, moon signifies emotions, feelings and is a basic driver of happiness among the couple and hence its importance in matching the charts. The other planets are prioritized only after the Moon. Other planets symbolize different aspects of the relationship. Such as Affection, Mercury Communication. Comparing Jupiter and Saturn might not be that useful unless the couple have a big age difference (say more than 5 years). This is because Jupiter and Saturn are slow moving. To find explanations look for the houses the planets are in. An example: If the Moon of A is in Leo and the Moon of B is in Cancer we have a problem because fire and water do not go together well 2. The Moon of A is in the second house from the Moon of B. Hence, for B, A would be a reason for in-flow (2nd house). However, the Moon of B is in the twelfth house (sign Cancer) from the Moon of A (sign Leo). Therefore, it is possible that B will be a drain (12th house) on A. Similarly, one needs to analyze planetary pairs. If the Venus of one person is in opposition to the Mars of the other person, it means strong sexual attraction 3. This is also the case if the Venus of A conjuncts the Mars of B. A similar rule can be made of the relationship between the Sun and the Moon. If the Sun of one person is in opposition to the Moon of the other person, this works well. This is also the case if the Sun of A conjuncts the Moon of B. We can picture here in this combination that the identity, self, vision of one person is aspected by the emotions and feelings of the other person a mark for a healthy relationship. Sun

Cases like these will be a good exchange of female (Shakti: Moon and Venus) and male (Shiva: Sun and Mars) energies. Corresponding relationships between Jupiter and Mercury would lead to better intellectual balance. Moon and Mars are very important planets for a female as they signify Motherhood, Longevity of Marital Chord, Blood and Fluids, Compassion, Security and Mothers protection. Jupiter is the planet signifying progeny, benevolence, chastity and piety and any association of Jupiter with Moon is a big benefactor in a female chart, an important aspect to look while matching charts. In the absence of such Lunar Jupiterean relationship, it is important that Moon in a female chart should not be blemished by association, aspect or opposition from Rahu 4. Venus is the important planet in a male chart and the male chart has to be weighed similarly, as mentioned above. Sub planets Gulika and Maandi play a very important role in marital life as these are the planets which even though do not occupy the status of being main planets but since being the satellites of Rahu and Saturn, they influence hugely. Their presence in dharma sthanas viz., 1st, 5th, 9th and 12th create afflictions and aberrations. After looking at such strict filters in a individual charts, if an astrologer comes across a female horoscope, either through a Vivaaha Prasna 5 (query related to Marriage) or during matching of horoscopes and if such a chart happens to contain: Conjunction of a weak Moon with Rahu or Saturn. Kemadruma Yoga (Moon without any aspect, and devoid of any planets on 12th, 2nd, 6th and 7th from it) Mars in Mangalya sthanas (2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th and 12th ) either from lagna or moon - It is here that an astrologer should use the jurisprudence and vision, as is advocated in the study of astrology. Astrologer should balance the dosha (ill effect) with a different and yet equalizing dosha in the other chart. This is called Dosha Samya or equalizing the afflictions. It is a common usage,
4 5

Rahu is the Unconventional, Untraditional and makes one tread different paths and can make on heretic. Aspects like marriage, marital affairs, progeny and behavior should never be analysed without a proper query or an authentic querent. Astrologer should also abide by the rules of Astrologer Querent secrecy.

which we all would have heard that a chart with Kuja Dosha has to be matched with another chart with Kuja Dosha. However, the counteracting
forces and planetary interplay should be calculated well by the astrologer. Example: If one chart contains Mars in 2nd, the best matching prescription would be another chart with Mars in 12th. It simply translates that while the family and house aspects of one partner suffer, the other remains separated. If in a females chart contains Kemadruma Yoga, the matching prescription would that the males chart should contain an extremely strong Lagna / Moon. This pictures us a scenario that while one leads, the other follow. If Moon conjoins Rahu or Saturn in a females chart, there has to be corresponding yogas in male chart too. Rahu should either be benefic or yogas like Sadhu Yoga, Amala yoga would be a good remedy. The only combination for an 8th house Mars is again an 8th house Mars only, since there is no counteractive force for longevity. There are no prescribed combinations for Dosha Samya but the astrologer should weigh both the sides and hence prescribe accordingly. However, there are yogas viz., Visha Kanya Yoga, Kroora Sarpa Dosha, Maara Yoga, Bahu Saukhya Yoga for women and Madana Yoga, Pisacha grastha Yoga, Shanda Yoga, Kalatra Shanda Yoga etc for men. If these yogas are found in the chart, it is advisable that the astrologer suggest the respective natives against getting married. Also to be noted are special Parivraja Yogas whose presence in either charts would mar the happening or the happiness of marriage and thus to be recommended accordingly.

KUTA ANALYSIS In what follows, the traditional method of Kutas analysis is being explained. The traditional method consists of comparing the Nakshatras of both the bride and the groom, for whom the compatibility analysis is being done. Kuta Analysis should only be done in the absence of both the charts. The Kutas analysis consists of 12 factors. Every factor can give some points. After the analysis is made all the points are added up. To have a good relationship a minimum of points is required. If the total points are below the minimum than it is possible, the astrologer shall advise against the marriage. Here are the different factors: 1. Varna: This
Varna

is a factor, which is an indication of the ego development, ideals and principles that drive the partners.

If they both belong to the same category 1 point is given. 1. If one of them is Anuloma and other belongs to one of the other four castes, then it is 1 point. However, this is rejected is one of them is Pratiloma and the other one belongs to the rest four

2. Vasya Kuta: Some signs have a certain degree of attraction,

affection, magnetism to each other. Vasya Kuta describes the understanding of each other. It mentions the intensity of mutual attraction and affection between people.
If the Moon of the female shows affinity / attraction towards the Moon of the male one point is given. If the Moon of the male shows affinity / attraction towards the Moon of the female, also one point is given. The maximum amount of points to be gained from this factor is two, if affinity / attraction exists from both sides.

3. Dina Kuta: Dina Kuta describes the health and well being of the

couple
If the Nakshatra of the man is 0, 2, 4, 6 or 8 Nakshatras from the Nakshatra of the woman 3 points will be given. If the number is 9 or more it is divided by 9 and we work with the remainder. Maximum points can be gained in this kuta is 3.

saravana

Let us say the Nakshatra of the man is 14 Nakshatras from the Nakshatra of the woman 14/9=1 and the remainder is 5. Because the remainder is 5 no points are being given.

4. Yoni

This factor is related to biological and sexual compatibility between the couple. Every Nakshatra is associated with
Kuta: a type of yoni or origin. Example: If 2 nakshatras are associated with a tiger yoni. That means these nakshatras are rather wild in making love. There is also a division in male and female yonis. It is best if both partners are born in Nakshatras, which symbolize the same yoni type, but of different sexes. Maximum points that could be gained in this kuta is 4. Rules: - If the girl is born in a female Nakshatra and the boy is in a male, the couple will have financial stability. If both are in female Nakshatra, there will be loss of wealth. If both are in the male Nakshatras, it is better to be rejected. Therefore, someone with the Moon in Vishakha would be a great sexual match for someone with the Moon in Chitra. If a couple has friendly yonis, of the female type, marriage will be acceptable. It will be a difficult match if among the two people, both have male yonis.

5. Graha

This factor determines the outlook, objective, intellectual level and spiritual plane of existence between the couple.
Maitri: Maximum points that could be earned in this section is 5. When the lords of the Moon signs are friends Graha Maitri is at its maximum. In this case five points are given. When lord A is a friend to lord B and lord B is neutral to lord A this is good. Four points are being given. When both are neutral, Graha Maitri is mediocre. This will bring in three points. When one is friendly and the other is inimical 1 point is given. When one is neutral and the other is inimical this will give a point. When both are enemies Graha Maitri is zero. However, if a friendship exists between the lords of the Moon signs in the navamsa three points are given (instead of zero, or one point).

6. Gana Kuta: This factor determines the temperamental characteristics

between the couple.

Nakshatras have been classified into Deva, Manusha / Nara (manusha) and Demon (Rakshaka). People who have their Moons in Nakshatras that fall in the same category can marry. Maximum points that can be allotted in this section is 6.

7. Rashi Kuta: This factor determines the growth of the family and

family welfare. This factor is different from the above factors, as,
this deals with the signs in which the Moon is located (and not the Nakshatras). Maximum points that could be earned in this section are 7.

Bad results: Moon in the chart of the man is in the 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 th from the Moon in the chart of woman. Bad results: Moon in chart of the woman is in the 12 th from the Moon in the chart of the man. Good results: Moon in Chart of the man is in the 12 (gives longevity), 7 th (gives agreement) from the Moon in the chart of woman. Good results: Moon in chart of the woman is in the 2 (gives longevity), 3 (gives happiness), 4 (gives wealth), 5 (gives happiness), 6 (progeny will prosper), 7 th (gives agreement) from the Moon in the chart of the man. When both signs are owned by the same planet inauspicious effects will be cancelled. The bad results coming from a certain number are the opposite of the good results. If good results exist (or if bad results are cancelled) 7 points will be given by this factor. Male born in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th Rasis from that of the female should not enter into wedlock. If both have the same Janma Rasi, marriage can only be done provided both are not of the same Janma Nakshatra. This means that the Janma Rasi of the man should not be in the Adrisya portion from the Janma Rasi from the woman. From any sign, the Adrisya (Invisible half) are the Lagna (beyond the cusp) to the 7th (before the Cusp), for practical purpose this can be taken as 2nd to 6th. Principle 2: Along with the placement mentioned above, the placement in the 8th and 12th from the Janma rasi of the Woman is not favorable. This is understandable, that the Dusthana placement of the mans rasi from that of womens cannot be favorable for conjugal happiness as they would either be inimical or indifferent from each other.

Matching of Horoscopes

saravana

12

Principle 3: Even if the lords of the mans and womans rasis are foe, if they are 7th from each other, this can be accepted as very good. Riders: 1. If the Janma Rasi of the male is not in a favourable place from the Janma Rasi of the female, the blemish can be reduced, if the lord of those rasis are mutually friendly. However, the blemish intensifies, if the lords are inimically disposed. 2. When the girl is born in an odd Janma Rasi, then the boy born in the 6th and 8th there from can be taken as an optional measure. If she is born in even Janma Rasi, the boy born in the 6th should be rejected and the 8th can be accepted. 3. If the Janma Rasi of both the boy and girl have vasya and do not have vedha, then the 6th and 8th position of the boys rasi from the girls one can be accepted. We shall study the vasya and vedha dosha later. 4. Harihara does not attach much blemish to the 3rd and 4th house positions for the Janma Rasi of the male from that of the female as this shall neither indicate poverty, nor serious quarrels leading to estrangement nor loss of children. Sorrow is an integral part of human life and this should not be taken as a criterion for dissolution of marriage. 5. The same Janma Rasi is allowed as long as the couple do not have the same Janma Nakshatra. However, if they happen to be the same, marriage is permissible provided it is not Jyestha, Moola, Purvaashadha, Pushya, Aslesha, Magha, Hasta, Rohini, Dhanistha, Shatabhisaj, Ardra or Bharani. 8. Nadi Kuta: Ayurveda defines three constitution types as Vata, Pitta and Kapha. It signifies health, pulse or nervous energy indicating

the physiological and to a certain extent hereditary factors and internal metabolism. Nakshatras are divided between these three
temperaments. The Moons of the boy and girl should fall in Nakshatras of a different dosha. It is also recommended that the

Matching of Horoscopes

Moons do not fall in the same rows of the scheme below. Maximum points in this section are 8. A boy with a predominantly windy or phlegmatic or bilious

constitution should ideally not marry a girl of the same type. Both the boy and the girl falling in different constitutions would get 8 points. Both of them in Vata gets 4 Both of them in Kapha gets 2 Both of them in Pitta gets 0

The above kutas are considered for measurement and are attributed certain rupas or points which are in total 36 in number. It is a general indication that if the accumulated points are more than or equal to 21, it is considered healthy and favourable to conform the marriage between the boy and girl. Kutas Varna Kuta Vashya Kuta Tara / Dina Kuta Yoni Kuta Grahamaitri Kuta Gana Kuta Bhakuta Nadi Kuta Total Max Points 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 36

The above system of matching using the 8 kuta is also named Ashta Koota Guna Melan or synastry using 8 kutas. Since it is tedious to calculate all the 8 sections individually, the following table summarizes all the 8 sections of matching, based on the stars of both the boy and girl. Consider boys star from the top, and girls star from the side.

The total amount of points to be gained is 36. As a rule of thumb we can say that the minimum points which should be gained for the match to be good is 21. It is to be kept in mind that this is just one factor. Apart from the above 8 Kutas, the following are also considered for general matching but no points were given. 9. Mahendra Kuta: This factor is for blessings in the married life; Well-

being; Longevity. The Nakshatra of the man should be 4, 7, 10, 13,

16, 19, 22 or 25 Nakshatras away from the Nakshatra of the woman. A good Mahendra Kuta should promote the longevity of the relationship.

10. Stree Dirgha: This factor is for the long life of the Husband. The Nakshatra of the man should preferably be more than 9 constellations away from the Nakshatra of the woman. 11. Rajju: This factor is used to measure the duration of married life. The Nakshatras are being divided into 5 types of Rajju. To make a long relationship possible the Moon Nakshatras of the couple should not fall in the same Rajju. Below you will see a table of the divisions. I have also mentioned the number of a certain Nakshatra. You can see that the Nakshatras, which are mentioned in a next category, are always the neighbouring Nakshtras of a former category.

In a Kutas analysis, this factor is mentioned but no points are given by this factor. 12. Vedha: This factor is for the obstacles in the married life. Some Nakshatras are said to afflict each other. A marriage between people

who have their Moons in Nakshatras, which afflict each other, should not take place. This is a list of the prohibited pairs: Ashwini (1) and Jyeshta (18); Bharani (2) and Anuradha (17); Krittika (3) and Vishakha (16); Rohini (4) and Swati (15); Mrigashira (5) and Dhanistha (23); Ardra (6) and Shravana (22); Punarvasu (7) and Uttara Ashadha (21); Pushya (8) and Purva Ashadha (20); Ashlesha (9) and Mula (19); Magha (10) and Revati (27); Purva Phalguni (11) and Uttara Bhadrapada (26); Uttara Phalguni (12) and Purva Bhadrapada (25); Hasta (13) and Shatabhishak (24). In Kuta analysis, this factor is mentioned but no points are given by this factor.

CONCLUSION Out of the total 20 sections given by many astrologers, only 12 are in common usage today and for calculation purposes, first 8 are considered. It

is to be noted that this Kuta Analysis method does not supersede the first method, ie., comparison of charts and is also inferior to the latter in many ways. But there are many occasions, when the native is not cast a
horoscope, and even the star is not known for many people. For such people, based on the name their star could be ascertained and using the 8 gunas, their stars could be compared. Another limitation to this process is that this traditional method is based only on the Moon. Nevertheless, it is necessary to compare all the planets and the ascendant by this method, not just the Moon. We may calculate the average results for all these. In that case, the picture may very iwell be different.
