ABSTRACT
This researchset out to assesstheSalasala privately operated decentralized faecal sludgemanagement systemwhich located at Tegeta Dar es Salaaamand to critically analyzetheimprovements which are needed to make it suitableafaecal sludge management system with apotential for citywide adoption. CurrentlytheSalasalaprivately faecal sludge managementfacility is the only facilitythatis used to managefaecal sludge from on-site sanitation facilitiesofthe whole area of Tegeta Boko, Bunju, Ununio, Wazo Hill, Salasala, KunduchiMtongani,Kunduchi, Africana andpart ofMikochenineighborhoods.Wastewater samples wastakenfrom thesludgepond(i.e.at the inlet, middleandoutlet), andoutlet of constructed wetlandsystem. The sludge volumeof thepondwas measured byconfiguringonsiteoffshore coordinatesystem along the breadth and span of the pond and thesludge depth was taken with a tape at each point X, Y of orthogonal projection andvolumecomputation was done by using a Spot height method ofEarthwork computation. Sludgesamples was taken from fivesampling points, two points of three samplestakenvertically downalong the sludge depthand three points of single samplesin the sludge pond.Analysis of physicochemicalcharacteristics such Color, Turbidity, Total suspended solid and ammonianitrogenof system wastewater was observed to be not within the minimum permissible amounts(i.e. TBS and WHO).The parameters of effluent wastewater that observed to be far away fromthestandardswasColor,900Pt-Co/L
where’s
TBS standardsis 300Pt-Co/L, Turbidity500NTU(TBS standards 300)andTSS 251.5 mg/L (TBS standards 100 mg/L). Chemical parameters,Ammonia-nitrogen (NH3-
N) was 200mg/l where’s TBS standards is 6mg/L, and a phosphatePO4 129.67 mg/L where’s TBS standards is 15 mg/L. Biological

was 636.67mg/L
and 318.33 mg/L where’s TBS
standards are 60 and 30mg/Lrespectively. Faecal coliforms and Totalcoliforms was 16 × 10

respectively. For sludge volume and stability test, it was observed thatthe pond have a sludgevolume of 252 m

and thesludge have not yet stabilized enough.Thesystemlookseconomical,as it makes a profit of about51,840,000 Tsh/= per year,Howeverthesystemimprovements
