Religion
2012/2013
Message from the Editor:
We are delighted to introduce our new list of titles in religion. We remaincommitted, at I.B.Tauris, to representing the diversity and spread of globalreligious traditions. Once again our catalogue offers a range of researchmonographs, student textbooks and books for general readers. These titlesmay be varied in the topics discussed and their target audience, but theyshare an enduring rationale: to inform, challenge orthodoxies, push back thelimits of discussion, and transmit knowledge across boundaries and borders. We look for the most accomplished writers and scholars wherever theyare. We are interested, above all, in ideas.Highlights for this season include: Justin J. Meggitt’s provocative new book about the motivations and ‘madness’ of Jesus, which gives due weight to thepowerful, but often neglected, prophetic tradition within early Christianity(p3); the late Barbara Freyer Stowasser’s unique and authoritativetreatment of time in Islam (p15); Nicholas N. Patricios’ comprehensiveand lavishly-illustrated survey of Byzantine churches and their liturgicalsymbolism (p2); Malise Ruthven’s in-depth introduction to the Church of Latter-Day Saints (p8); a new biography of Archbishop Cosmo GordonLang, drawing on previously unseen material (p5); substantial titles inreligion and philosophy by Terry F. Godlove on Kant and Andrew Hass onHegel (p11); Michael Seymour’s reception history of the captivating ideaof Babylon (p10); a new book by doyen of ancient religions, Julian Baldick,on Austronesian history, ritual and culture (p11); and a major study on themeanings and context of the Qur’an by Muhammad Abdel Haleem (p20).As always, we look forward to your reactions to our programme as well asyour proposals and manuscripts.
