BIG TEN. BIG NEWS.

Stringing Together Some Ws: Three Big Ten teams will carry unblemished records into the final weekend of non-conference play following wins last weekend. Minnesota moved to 3-0 on the new season after defeating Western Michigan, Northwestern notched its third win of the season after knocking off ACC foe Boston College and Ohio State held off Pac12 opponent California to win its third straight to start the new year. The Big Ten is one of four conferences in the nation with three or more teams holding 3-0 marks through the first three weeks of the 2012 season. Quick Out of the Blocks: The Big Tens three unbeaten squads are among just 24 teams in the nation that have opened with three straight triumphs to start the 2012 campaign. Minnesota improved to 3-0 for the first time since 2008, when it started the season with four consecutive wins, a feat the Gophers can match this weekend with a victory over Syracuse. Northwestern is 3-0 for the third time in the last five years and can move to 4-0, also for the third time since 2008, should the Wildcats knock off South Dakota this Saturday. Ohio State is 3-0, the first time the Buckeyes have started with three wins to start the year since 2007, when they won 10 consecutive contests. A win Saturday would mark the sixth time since 2000 Ohio State would start the new season with at least four straight victories.

* Ineligible for postseason play

BIG TEN FOOTBALL WEEKLY RELEASE - WEEK 4

BIG TEN. BIG NEWS.

Where We Rank: Six Big Ten teams are receiving votes in the latest Associated Press (AP) and USA Today coaches polls, including five teams appearing among the top 25 in at least one ranking. Ohio State leads the way at No. 16 in the AP poll, while Michigan and Michigan State join them among the top 20. The Wolverines were voted No. 17 by the coaches and No. 18 by the media, while the Spartans were rated No. 20 in the coaches poll and No. 21 in the media rankings. Nebraska returned to the top 25 in the AP poll at No. 25, while moving up two spots to No. 22 in the USA Today vote. Wisconsin was rated No. 24 by the coaches and received votes in the media poll. Northwestern also received votes from both the AP and coaches groups. Putting Up Big Numbers: The third week of the season saw several outstanding individual performances from conference standouts, including eight student-athletes passing the 100yards rushing mark, six quarterbacks reaching the 200-yards passing milestone and six wide receivers surpassing 100 yards receiving or nine catches on the week. Nebraskas Ameer Abdullah led all conference rushers with 167 yards on the ground and two touchdowns. Illinois signal caller Reilly OToole threw for 333 yards and five touchdowns to pace all conference quarterbacks. Ohio States Devin Smith accounted for 145 receiving yards and two touchdowns, while Northwesterns Demetrius Fields finished with nine receptions. In addition to impressive offensive efforts, Big Ten defensive student-athletes enjoyed successful performances, including nine players with 10 or more tackles and 10 with two tackles for loss. Wisconsins Mike Taylor was the top tackler in the conference last week, finishing with 15, including 10 solos, while Penn States Anthony Zettel finished with two sacks to lead a group of 10 defenders with two tackles for loss. A complete list of Week 3 stat leaders can be found on the Big Ten football blog at bigten.org. Ranking Among the Nations Best: Through three weeks, numerous Big Ten standouts rank among the nations statistical elite. Offensively, Northwesterns Venric Mark is seventh in the country in all-purpose yards per game, averaging 196.67 yards per contest. Illinois Reilly OToole is eighth in the country with a 181.03 pass efficiency, Michigans Denard Robinson is ninth nationally in total offense at 350 yards per contest and Ohio States Braxton Miller rates 10th in rushing yards per game at 125.67. Defensively, Ohio States Travis Howard ranks fourth in the country in average interceptions per game (1.00), while Iowas Anthony Hitchens is sixth in the NCAA in tackles per game at 12.33 and Wisconsins Mike Taylor is seventh at 12.00. A list of Big Ten standouts and teams in the NCAA rankings can be found on Page 3. Ive Got Your Back: The Big Ten has shown its depth at the quarterback position thus far in 2012, as multiple teams have called upon more than one quarterback. Last Saturday, Illinois Reilly OToole stepped in for injured starter Nathan Scheelhaase to lead all conference signal callers with 333 yards and five touchdowns against Charleston Southern. Following an injury to starter Tre Roberson against Massachusetts on Sept. 8, Cam Coffman threw for 159 yards and a touchdown in the win, while Nate Sudfeld guided the Hoosiers to two touchdown drives in the final four minutes to give Indiana the lead against Ball State last Saturday. Filling in for MarQueis Gray after his second-quarter inury, Minnesotas Max Shortell threw for 188 yards and three touchdowns in a win over Western Michigan. Northwestern has utilized a two-quarterback system in Kain Colter and Trevor Siemian to start the season with three straight wins, while Purdues Caleb TerBush and Robert Marve have each guided the Boilermakers to wins with Marve earning the victory over Eastern Kentucky and TerBush leading the way against Eastern Michigan.

Big Ten Football Awards

The Big Ten will continue to honor its past while recognizing its current standouts at the conclusion of the 2012 campaign. The Big Tens enhanced football awards program presents 18 individual trophies in addition to the Big Ten Championship trophy, bearing the names of one or two former standouts. The distinguished names on these football awards honor just a small sampling of the countless student-athletes and coaches who have contributed to the conferences rich and storied history. Seventeen of the honors will be awarded immediately following the regular season, including awards for the best quarterback, running back, receiver, tight end, offensive lineman, defensive lineman, linebacker, defensive back, kicker and punter. Each of these individual position awards features the names of two former student-athletes. The Big Ten will also continue to honor the conferences top coaches, offensive and defensive players and linemen and freshmen with end-of-year trophies. Big Ten coaches have the opportunity to claim two awards. Media voters will continue to select the Dave McClain Coach of the Year, which has been awarded since 1972, while coaches vote for the Hayes-Schembechler Coach of the Year award. The top offensive player will receive the Graham-George Offensive Player of the Year award, the best defensive player will be awarded the NagurskiWoodson Defensive Player of the Year award and the best first-year standout will receive the ThompsonRandle El Freshman of the Year award. The winner of the Big Ten Football Championship Game will receive the Amos Alonzo Stagg Championship Trophy, while the most outstanding player in the game will be awarded the Grange-Griffin Championship Game MVP award. The conference also created two postcollegiate awards - the Ford-Kinnick Leadership Award and the Dungy-Thompson Humanitarian Award. The full list of awards, along with a breakdown of the former standouts appearing in each awards name, appears to the right.

BIG TEN FOOTBALL DIVISIONAL TIEBREAKER

The Big Ten football championship will be decided by a game played between the two division champions. A team or teams that are not eligible to participate in a postseason football bowl game as a result of NCAA and/or Big Ten sanctions shall not be eligible to participate in the Big Ten football championship game. The winner of the Big Ten football championship game will represent the Conference in the Bowl Championship Series (BCS) unless a conference team other than the champion is ranked No. 1 or No. 2 in the final BCS poll. The following procedure will determine the representative from each division in the event of a tie: (a) (b) If two teams are tied, the winner of the game between the two tied teams shall be the representative If three or more teams are tied, steps 1 through 7 will be followed until a determination is made. If only two teams remain tied after any step, the winner of the game between the two tied teams shall be the representative. 1. The records of the three tied teams will be compared against each other 2. The records of the three tied teams will be compared within their division 3. The records of the three teams will be compared against the next highest placed teams in their division in order of finish (4, 5, and 6) 4. The records of the three teams will be compared against all common conference opponents; 5. The highest ranked team in the first Bowl Championship Series Poll following the completion of Big Ten regular season conference play shall be the representative in the Big Ten Championship Game, unless the two highest ranked tied teams are ranked within one spot of each other in the BCS poll. In this case, the head-to-head results of the top two ranked tied teams shall determine the representative in the Big Ten Championship 6. The team with the best overall winning percentage [excluding exempted games] shall be the representative 7. The representative will be chosen by random draw. If one or both of the Big Ten division champions is ineligible to play in the Big Ten championship game, then the participant(s) in the Big Ten championship game shall be determined by the following procedure: a) b) c) d) If the ineligible team is tied for the division championship, then the team it tied with shall be the Big Ten championship game representative. If two or more teams are tied with an ineligible team for the division championship, then the ineligible team is removed and the remaining teams revert to the tie-break procedure. The division runner-up shall be the Big Ten championship game representative. If there is a division runner-up tie, then the tied teams shall revert to the tie-break procedure.

If the championship game cannot be played (due to any reason beyond the control of the Big Ten Conference), the two division champions (using divisional tie-breakers as set forth above) shall be declared co-champions and the following procedure will be used to determine the Big Ten Conference representative to the Bowl Championship Series: a) b) Teams ranked either No. 1 or No. 2 in the final BCS poll will automatically be placed in the BCS championship game. If the two divisional representatives met previously in the season and neither is ranked No. 1 or No. 2 in the final BCS standings, the team ranked highest in the final BCS standings shall be the representative to the BCS, unless the other team is ranked within five or fewer places of the higher ranked team. In this case, the head-to-head results of the two teams shall determine the Conferences BCS representative. If the two divisional representatives did not meet previously during the season, the team ranked highest in the BCS standings shall be the BCS representative. If the two teams are tied in the BCS standings, the team with the best overall Big Ten record shall be the BCS representative. If the two teams remain tied after d), the team with the best combined record of the tied teams against all common Big Ten opponents each team played that season shall be the BCS representative. If the two teams remain tied after e), the representative will be the team with the best overall winning percentage. If the two teams remain tied after f), the representative will be the team furthest removed from BCS participation. If the two teams remain tied after g), the representative shall be determined by a random draw.
