Minerals provide the oundation or the American way o lie. They inspire the innovation o new technologies, eed U.S.manuacturing and are vital to our national security. In 2011, $669 billion worth o processed mineral materials were used by sectors including construction, manuacturing andagriculture to add more than $2.2 trillion to the U.S. economy. Minerals were put to use in liesaving medical devices, ournation’s inrastructure, deense technologies, and the computers and communications systems that connect us to the world.Though America is home to a wealth o mineral resources, our ability to secure these critical materials amid rising globalcompetition is threatened by an outdated permitting process and regulations that delay mining projects or years—in somecases, up to a decade or more. Our nation’s lack o a coherent, orward-looking minerals policy has orced U.S. manuacturers to secure roughly hal o theirminerals rom oreign countries in an increasingly competitive market. This import dependence subjects our minerals supplychain to disruptions, threatens our security and gives nations with established minerals policies a head start on economic growth.Over the past year, I’ve traveled the country to learn more about how the absence o a minerals policy and the resulting deciencyin domestic production aects not just businesses, but also communities that stand to benet rom the good jobs and economicstimulus mining provides. While there has been recent headway in Congress to address impediments to mining, still greater progress is needed beoreour nation can realize the ull potential o U.S. minerals mining. In the ollowing pages, I invite you to learn more about what minerals mean to America, the challenges acing our supplychain, and solutions to ensuring our nation has access in the long term to the minerals that will dene America’s uture.Thank you or your support and interest. Best regards,Hal QuinnPresident and CEONational Mining Association
