New Athletic Director
You’ll never find a name as unique as Mohajir. I’m not even sure how to pronounce
it, but Red Wolves fans better get used to hearing it more and more. As a matter of
fact, they’ll be hearing it tomorrow at 10:30 AM CST when Terry Mohajir (there’s
that name again) is introduced as athletics director of Arkansas State University. An alumni, and former athlete of stAte, Mohajir graduated with a degree in sportsmanagement, picking up a minor in marketing. Later, he went on to become theAssociate Athletics Director for Development at Florida Atlantic University (Sun Belt Conference) where he evolved the program. He was at the forefront of the $70
million dollar stadium on the campus at FAU among other things. Here’s a
paragraph from his biography detailing his accomplishments at FAU:
Mohajir joined the FAU staff in December 2004 as Associate AthleticsDirector for Development, and was heavily involved in creating acomprehensive fundraising program that focuses on major gifts, the annualfund and special events. During his tenure FAU's athletics department enhanced its major gift program 800 percent, Owl Club giving increased 400percent, and special-events revenue increased 150 percent.
This information was retrieved from the U
niversity of Kansas’s athletics webpage. I
was just getting to that. After FAU, Mohajir moved his interest to Kansas where hebecame a Jayhawk and th
e “Senior Athletics Director for External Relations”. He
began work in May of 2011. A little over a year later, however, he is coming back home at the dawn of the Red Wolf.Chuck Welch, new ASU system president, said that he was looking for a high-caliber
candidate that could literally “run with the pack”. What I mean by that is, he wanted
someone with experience to take the wheel behind an ever-growing and ever-improving sports program, particularly Red Wolves football. Welch also mentionedthat he would need someone with the ability to generate interest in the sportsprograms at stAte and develop fundraising and donations to support this evolution.Terry Mohajir seems to fit the bill. Ever since Gus Malzahn took the helm as headcoach of the Wolves, the whole of NEA began to shake, rattle and roll. Dr. Dean Leewas moved to University Advancement, a $22 million facility was removed from thedrawing board to groundbreaking next month, and a new AD has been hired. Quitea year I should say. Howl about that!
Let’s not jump the gun here. He isn’t our AD officially; we’ll have to wait until
tomorrow until we hear the big announcement and maybe some commentary fromthe big boys. What does this guy think? Honestly, I think he fits the bill perfectly. Intalking to Welch, he wanted three things out of the new AD: 1) a person who canmaximize donations an
d fundraising; 2) a person who can literally “Run With Th
e
Pack”; and 3) a person who has a passion for the state of Arkansas. Who better than
a very successful, popular alumnus of stAte coming from an admired Jayhawks
