What are music channels?
Music television is a type of television programming which focusespredominantly on playing music videos from bands, usually on dedicatedtelevision channels broadcasting on satellite or cable.Music channels may host their own chart shows and award ceremonies.
MTV, originally an initialism of Music Television, is an American cabletelevision channel based in New York City that launched on August 1, 1981.The original purpose of the channel was to play music videos guided by on-airhosts known as VJs.Today, MTV primarily broadcasts a variety of reality and scripted televisionprograms targeted at adolescents and young adults.MTV has spawned numerous sister channels in the U.S. and associatedchannels internationally, some of which have gone independent. MTV'sinfluence on its audience, including issues related to censorship and socialactivism, has been a subject of debate for years.
VIVA a free-to-air German language based music television channel went firston the air on December 1, 1993.An association of broadcasters and record companies led by Time Warner,Sony Television, Polygram Records and EMI Music, saw their investment inVIVA as an antidote to the power of MTV Networks executives.Executives at US media giant Time Warner, keen on increasing their marketshare of its music repertoire and business in Germany, planned the new TVstation in 1992.VIVA became an immediate success with the audience, while ultimatelyproviding German artists with a music channel that could help expose theirmusic to the German audience.After many years of fierce competition for audience share, MTV NetworksEurope eventually acquired VIVA on 14. January 2005 after it had outran itsown efforts for better ratings.MTV today operates VIVA channels across Europe, in Germany, Austria,Switzerland, Poland, Hungary, the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland.
4Music is a music and entertainment channel in the United Kingdom andavailable on some digital television providers in the Republic of Ireland.
It is the only channel within the Box Television Network to be branded underChannel 4 and is one of the only channels in the network to be broadcast inwidescreen, the other being Heat.4Music is now the home for music/celebrity orientated shows and comediesthat were once shown on Channel 4.The channel replaced The Hits and broadcasts 24 hours a day whilst beingavailable on Freeview, Virgin Media, Sky and Smallworld Cable.
The Box is a television channel in the United Kingdom and Ireland andbroadcasts from 07:00 to 03:00 every day.The channel is one of many within the Box Television network, a joint venturebetween Channel Four Television Corporation and Bauer Media Group.The channel mainly broadcasts music videos, although it also features othermusic-related programming from 4Music.
Starz TV (formerly FIZZ TV) is a digital satellite TV channel, owned by CloudTelevision One Limited and is available through Sky within the UnitedKingdom and Ireland.
