The Black Roses brush off Jets 5-0

(FFAS MEDIA) PAGO PAGO The Black Roses continue to accumulate wins while at the same time successfully defending their womens FFAS National Cup after their latest, 5-0 win, over the Tafuna Jets. Black Roses is the standings leader and have yet to be seriously put to the test by any other team in the competition. In other matches it was Utulei Youth 0, Green Bay 0; PanSa 6, Vaiala Tongan 0 and Taputimu Youth 3, Lion Heart 0 by forfeit. Lion Heart was unable to field the required number of players (7) to start the match. BLACK ROSES 5, TAFUNA JETS 0 Both teams started with 10 players each with Black Roses playing the entire match with only this amount. The Jets completed their 11 but still could not take advantage of the numbers difference as Black Roses still racked up three goals in the first half. Angela Sao completed a hat trick after scoring twice in the first half to help Black Roses retain their cup for the second straight week. UTULEI YOUTH 0, GREEN BAY 0 A lot of back and forth between these two teams with no fruitful ending for either as their match ended in a 0-0 stalemate. Utulei, the closest team to Black Roses in terms of points, falls behind by 5. PANSA 6, VAIALA TONGAN 0 PanSa simply outclassed Vaiala Tongan in their 6-0 win last Saturday. PanSa scored three goals in both halves.

Manning, Brown help Giants rout Panthers 36-7

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) Eli Manning didnt need a fourth-quarter comeback Thursday night. The two-time Super Bowl champion quarterback, running back Andre Brown and the rest of the New York Giants finished off the Carolina Panthers way before that. Brown ran for a career-high 113 yards and two touchdowns in his first NFL start to help the Giants rout the Panthers 36-7. Four days after rallying from 14 points down to beat Tampa Bay, the Giants dominated the first half, scoring on their first four possessions to build a 20-0 lead. The defending champion Giants (2-1) were without three starters but it hardly mattered. Brown waived by five different teams including the Panthers since coming into the league as a fourth-round draft pick in 2009 got his chance Thursday night when Ahmad Bradshaw sat out with a neck injury. Brown said he thought about getting cut by the Panthers before the game and it inspired him. I was walking into the stadium and I have to go by the spot where I parked my car, Brown said. I felt a little fire, no doubt. Im so happy to come out here. It really humbled me. It really shows that everything is not guaranteed. You know, Im just going to ride this wave. Hopefully, its a long wave. Ramses Barden is hoping to ride that same wave. Barden caught nine passes for a career-high 138 yards in his first NFL start. He played in place of Hakeem Nicks. Of course it helps that the guy throwing you the ball is named Manning. He completed 27 of 35 passes for 288 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions. On the other side, second-year quarterback Cam Newton struggled all night and was pressured into three interceptions. The Panthers (1-2) had five turnovers, including two by returner Joe Adams. Newton had no luck running the read option against the Giants. He was held to 6 yards rushing a week after running for a career-high 71 yards against the Saints. We got some licks on him, when he kept the ball, and thats something that was lacking last week, Giants coach Tom Coughlin said. You have to be disciplined. You have to have people in the right spots, or hell take full advantage of it. Panthers coach Ron Rivera likened the loss to a lesson you learn from your big brother.

ASHSAAs Boys Volleyball Update: Stallions give THS a surprising run for the win

The Tafuna Warriors Boys Varsity Volleyball team remain undefeated and on top in this years ASHSAA Boys Volleyball League standings, with the playoffs just around the corner set for [photo: Jeff Hayner] October 3.
The Tafuna Warriors Boys Varsity Volleyball Team was able to hold off the Kanana Fou Stallions in three hard fought sets this past Wednesday at the Tafuna High School Gymnasium, making one think, where have these Stallions been all season? Despite the Stallions record of being at the bottom of the pack in the Varsity Division, they were able to take the undefeated Warriors to the limit, not only in the Varsity match up but in the Junior Varsity game as well. In the Junior Varsity game, the Stallions came out strong in the first set surprising the home crowd, but just fell short in defeat as the Warriors took the first set, 22-25. Going into the second set, the Stallions knew they could keep up with the home team and actually had the momentum going into next set. The Stallions were able to take set number two, 25-21. The last set the Warriors shook off the defeat with their home crowd at their backs cheering for them going into the last. Apparently it worked, as the Warriors walked away with the last set 8-15 to take the match. In the Varsity match up, it was pretty much the same as it was in Junior Varsity game. The Stallions came pumped up and ready to play and that is exactly what they did. Despite the Stallions loosing the first set 22-25, they knew they could keep up and possibly down the seemingly unbeatable Warriors and that is what they did, even though it was only in the second set 25-23, tying up the match going into the final set. The Stallions were able to once again take the Warriors to the limit, despite falling short leaving the Warriors the victors in the match with the final score being 22-25. In the other game on Wednesday, the East Side team in Red, the Fagaitua Vikings made a long trip to the West Side to take on the Nuuuli Voc-Tech Wildcats. In Junior Varsity game, the winless Wildcats was able to pull out their first victory of the year as they downed the Vikings in three sets, 26-24, 13-25 and 15-12. In the Varsity match up, these two teams have battled it out all season for the second best record in the Var-
sity Division. In the end, the Wildcats came out ahead in three sets, 22-25, 28-26 and 25-16 and are now tied with the Vikings in the overall standings. With the season getting close to the playoffs, teams are stepping up in their play keeping the league leader Warriors on their toes in the Varsity and Junior Varsity Divisions. With the playoffs (October 3) just around the corner, the Varsity Division will be choosing the top four teams. Even though the Samoana Sharks and Stallions have one win apiece at this time they still have a chance to make the top four, but for that to happen, the Vikings, Wildcats and Lions have to have a total breakdown in their play in the rest of the regular season, which most likely will not happen. In the Junior Varsity Division, it is a battle between the top three teams, Warriors, Sharks and Lions to see who will walk away with this years championship title. The JV Champion depends on who has the best record at the end of the regular season which will be October 1. Games are played on Monday, Wednesday and Fridays with scheduled starting time of 4:30 p.m. In todays match games, the Samoana Sharks will be traveling to Leone High School to take on the Lions, while the Stallions will be defending their home court against the Wildcats. Nationals seal postseason position, beat Dodgers 4-1
WASHINGTON (AP) The Washington Nationals brought postseason baseball back to the nations capital for the first time since 1933, earning a playoff spot Thursday night with a 4-1 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers. Nats Clinch flashed on the scoreboard as Washington ensured at least an NL wild-card spot behind Ross Detwilers six strong innings and Ryan Zimmermans RBI double. A crowd of 30,359 stood and cheered in the ninth inning, then got even louder when Drew Storen struck out Hanley Ramirez to end it. Manager Davey Johnson saluted the fans as he left the field and the team wore caps acknowledging the playoff berth. Washingtons magic number to win the NL East was reduced to eight. The Nationals lead idle Atlanta by 5 games. Washington was last in the postseason 79 years ago, when player-manager Joe Cronin and the Senators lost to the New York Giants in five games in the World Series. The loss dropped the Dodgers three games behind St. Louis for the NLs second wild-card spot. Milwaukee moved ahead of Los Angeles with its win over Pittsburgh. Detwiler (10-6) allowed just Mark Ellis fourth-inning home run and two singles. Storen earned his third save. Chris Capuano (11-11) got the loss. REdS 5, CUBS 3 CHICAGO (AP) The Reds became the first team in the majors to clinch a playoff spot this season, beating the Cubs while manager Dusty Baker remained in a hospital after being diagnosed with an irregular heartbeat. Ace Johnny Cueto (18-9) and the NL Central leaders ensured themselves of at least a wild-card spot. Cincinnati cut its magic number to two for winning the division for the second time in three years. The Reds said Baker would remain in a Chicago hospital for an additional day so doctors could monitor his progress. He is hoping to return to Cincinnati on Friday. Bench coach Chris Speier ran the team for a second straight game. Alfredo Simon got four outs for his first save. The Reds broke a scoreless tie by getting five straight singles off Manuel Corpas (0-2) in the seventh during a five-run rally capped by Henry Rodriguezs two-run double. CARdINALS 5, ASTROS 4 ST. LOUIS (AP) Pinch-hitter Carlos Beltran snapped a sixth-inning tie with a two-run double and Allen Craig hit a three-run homer, powering the Cardinals to a season sweep at home against the Astros. Beltrans double put St. Louis up 5-3, rewarding Jaime Garcia (5-7) for keeping it close and leaving the Cardinals 2 games up
for the second NL wild card with 12 games remaining. They took care of business against the lowly Astros, who absorbed their 102nd loss while leading for a single inning in the threegame series. The Cardinals were 6-0 at home against Houston, their first season series sweep in St. Louis since 1996. Bud Norris (5-13) allowed five runs in 5 1-3 innings for Houston after getting sent back to the team hotel Wednesday night suffering from flu-like symptoms. PHILLIES 16, mETS 1 NEW YORK (AP) Jimmy Rollins and Chase Utley sparked an eight-run first inning, Ryan Howard added a late grand slam and the Phillies routed the inept Mets before a few hundred fans at quiet Citi Field. Rookie right-hander Tyler Cloyd (2-1) pitched eight innings of three-hit ball and the Phillies stayed four games behind St. Louis for the second NL wild card, with two other teams in their path. Juan Pierre matched a career high with five hits, Utley added four and Philadelphia set season highs for runs and hits (21) including 19 singles. The Phillies finished a three-game sweep and won for the 11th time in 14 games. New York rookie starter Jeremy Hefner (2-7) did not record an out in the makeup game for Tuesday nights rainout. With the Mets setting marks for futility at home, it appeared fewer than 1,000 fans were in the stands for the first pitch. BREWERS 9, PIRATES 7 PITTSBURGH (AP) Rickie Weeks hit a tying two-run triple and scored the go-ahead run on Aramis Ramirezs single, helping surging Milwaukee rally for the victory. The Brewers have won five straight, eight of nine and 15 of 19 to climb into the playoff race. They remained 2 games back of St. Louis for the second NL wild-card slot. Milwaukee trailed 7-4 before it rallied for four runs in the eighth inning. Ramirez had three hits and three RBIs for the Brewers, who built an early 4-0 lead. Pittsburgh star Andrew McCutchen hit a three-run drive for his 30th homer. Chris Resop (1-4) got the loss. The Pirates (74-75) have dropped three straight and 11 of 13 to slip under .500 for the first time since late May. They are in danger of a 20th straight losing season, which would extend their major North American professional sports record.
TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) Not long after his teams latest raceup-the-field victory, Arizona coach Rich Rodriguez was asked about the next opponent, the Oregon Ducks. Man, those dudes are fast, Rodriguez said. They have fast guys who play fast. Rodriguez has a few of his own, setting up what could be the fastest game in the West or anywhere at Autzen Stadium on Saturday night. Thats when No. 22 Arizona (3-0), with the nonstop no-huddle offense Rodriguez helped innovate, takes on No. 3 Oregon (3-0) and Chip Kelly, the coach who put a rocket booster on RichRods original idea. Scoreboard operators, get your fingers ready. Officials, loosen up your legs. Fans, dont look away for too long. No need for a play clock. The knobs for these offenses dont go to 10. They go to 11. There could be 300 plays in this game, Oregon defensive coordinator Nick Aliotti said. OK, 300 might be a stretch, but 200 is certainly a possibility. Oregon has run 259 plays this season. Thats an average of 86 per game, with a high of 96 in its 63-14 win over Tennessee Tech. Thats still well behind Arizona, which has snapped it 280 times, two behind Marshall for most in the nation. They had a school-record 102 in a 56-0 rollover of South Carolina State last weekend 20 fewer than Tulane ran in its first two games combined. Were very similar in the way we like to push the pace, Rodriguez said. And in the way they pile up yards and points. Arizona is fourth nationally in total offense with 604.67 yards per game and 12th in scoring at 46.33 points. Oregon is seventh with 596.33 yards and fifth with 54 points. To help you with the addition, theyll combine for 100 points and 1,200 yards of offense if they stay on pace Saturday night. Arizona leads the nation in first downs with 108 and has 139 points for the season, 25 less than its 2004 team scored during an 11-game season. The Wildcats also have had two of the top three most prolific games in school history already this season, with 624 yards against Toledo and 689 against South Carolina State. Oregon, as has been the case under Kelly, has utilized the big play, scoring 23 touchdowns while averaging 27.25 minutes of possession per game. Arizona has been a little more methodical, scoring 18 touchdowns with an average time of possession of 31.46 minutes. They thrive on big plays and always have, Rodriguez said. They have guys that can take it. Both teams do. Oregon has playmakers that seem to rotate in like its a hockey game. Do-everything back DeAnthony Thomas made sure the Ducks didnt miss Heisman Trophy finalist LaMichael James, averaging 15.4 yards every time he touches the ball, whether its running, receiving or returning punts. Theres running back Kenjon Barner, quarterback Marcus Mariota, Keanon Lowe and 10 receivers averaging at least 10 yards per catch. Arizonas offense revolves around quarterback Matt Scott. A projected star before spending two seasons behind Nick Foles, Scott has been a dynamic force in the desert after finally getting his shot at being The Man. The fifth-year senior has been a perfect fit for Rodriguezs read-option offense, ranking fourth nationally with 395 total yards per game. Hes the Pac-12s leading passer with 995 yards passing and is eighth in rushing with 190 yards. Hes a good passer, a good runner, everything, Oregon defensive lineman Isaac Remington said. Rodriguez was a trailblazer for the current no-huddle trend sweeping college football today, creating a 2-minute-drill-all-thetime offense while at Glenville State back in the 1990s. He took the offense with him to Clemson, West Virginia, Michigan and now Arizona, adding little tweaks along the way. Kelly has done the same thing after meeting Rodriguez in 1999. An assistant coach at New Hampshire at the time, Kelly had gone down to Clemson to visit with Rodriguez, then the Tigers offensive coordinator. Kelly took some of the ideas he got there and added a few wrinkles of his own to create an offensive juggernaut at New Hampshire, then injected it with jet fuel in Eugene. Unless you were in the room with Knute Rockne and those guys back in the day, you took it from somebody, Kelly said. Thirteen years later, these no-huddle maestros will face off for the first time to see who can rev up faster. Yards will come in bunches. Numbers on the scoreboard could roll like a slot machine. Its going to be interesting to see who is going to out-tempo who, Aliotti said. It sure will. Just dont look away for very long.

Steelers Ryan Clark thrives in absence of Troy Polamalu

PITTSBURGH (AP) Ryan Clark does not stop talking. Not in the huddle. Not in meetings. Not on the sideline and certainly not on the field. The irrepressibly chatty Pittsburgh Steelers safety offers a running commentary on everything from an opponents offensive set to his teammates sartorial choices. Yet when asked how an undrafted player has managed to stick around the NFL for more than a decade, win a Super Bowl ring and make a Pro Bowl while serving as half of arguably the best safety tandem in the league and Clark grows quiet before answering. Because Troy (Polamalu) is a really, really talented guy, he said. True enough. Then again, isnt Clark? Not like that, Clark said. Not abnormally talented for an NFL safety ... Im just a guy. One that in his own way is perhaps just as valuable to Pittsburghs defense as his future Hall of Fame teammate. With Polamalu watching in sweats due to a strained right calf, Clark did a pretty solid Polamalu impersonation during a 27-10 win over the New York Jets last Sunday, all the way down to the eye-catching hairdo (a well-manicured faux-hawk if youre keeping score). If Clark wasnt making one of his team-high eight tackles, he was breaking up a potentially game-turning pass to New York wide receiver Stephen Hill or bouncing ideas off Polamalu between defensive series. Not that Polamalu minded. I probably enjoyed the last game more than any other game that Ive watched or been on the sideline for, the perennial AllPro said. In another time or on another team, Clark might be the one people talk about, the one with the Defensive Player of the Year Awards and the closet full of Pro Bowl jerseys. Instead hes often viewed as the normal human to Polamalus wild-haired football savant, the steadying presence whose discipline allows Polamalu to go do his thing. Clark is OK with that. Though he allows maybe he would have a higher profile if he didnt play alongside one of the best players of his generation, he wouldnt trade places and personal glory for the privilege of lining up on the same field with a guy he considers among his closest friends. The thing about it is hes helped me get to this point, Clark said. Theres so many things about playing the position of safety that Ive taken from him. Obviously I cant do what he does, but I can prepare like he prepares and we have each other to talk to. And there are times when Clark knows when to stop talking and listen. Every time he walked off the field against New York he made a beeline for Polamalu and asked the soft-spoken superstar for his thoughts. There was never one point in my mind where I wished Troy would shut up, Clark said. I was going to him, Hey man, what do you see, whats going on? I dont think every safety tandem has that kind of relationship. There is a decided lack of ego between them, an offshoot of a franchise that has little tolerance for prima donnas, particularly on defense. When Polamalu is sidelined as he could be yet again on Sunday when the Steelers (1-1) travel to Oakland (0-2) defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau takes the cuffs off Clark a little bit and lets his faux-hawked defensive leader run loose. The results can be stunning. Clark spearheaded a defense that shut down the Jets in the second half last weekend as Pittsburghs secondary manhandled New Yorks wide receivers and limited the Jets to 91 yards over the final 30 minutes. It was the kind of performance that gets a quarterbacks attention. Ryan is probably one of the most underrated players in the game, Oakland QB Carson Palmer said. If not that, hes one of the most underrated players on defense in the league because hell come up and hit people, he lets guys take chances, like Troy ... Hes always kind of there to save them. Not always. Pittsburghs last two losses have come on the road in Denver, where a sickle cell trait that flares up at high altitudes nearly killed Clark five years ago. He made the trip both times but didnt play. In each game the Broncos torched Pittsburghs secondary, most memorably on Demaryius Thomas 80-yard sprint past Ike Taylor and Ryan Mundy on the first play of overtime in January to give Denver a stunning 29-23 Wild Card victory.

DETROIT (AP) Seth Smith homered, doubled and drove in four runs, and the Oakland Athletics avoided a three-game sweep by beating the Detroit Tigers 12-4 Thursday in a matchup of AL playoff contenders. Oakland is tied with Baltimore for the wildcard lead. The Tigers are two games behind Central-leading Chicago. Josh Donaldson hit a go-ahead single in a four-run sixth inning that made it 6-3, then had an RBI double to cap a six-run ninth that included Smiths three-run double. Giants manager B Bochy supports 49ers QB Smith

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) Bruce Bochy made his own statement in support of San Francisco 49ers quarterback Alex Smith. The Giants manager wore a red 49ers cap in the dugout before the series finale against the Colorado Rockies on Thursday, a day after Smith said hed been fined $15,000 last season by the NFL for sporting a Giants hat after games though the fine was later dropped. Thats why Im wearing this hat, Bochy said. Were having fun with this. Its our way of supporting him for supporting us. Were all 49er fans here. This is in honor of Alex. Im glad he didnt have to pay the fine. Thats good news. Bochy had seen Smith in the Giants hat and sees the No. 1 overall draft pick from 2005 when he attends games at AT&T Park to support San Franciscos baseball team. Ive seen him out here, and I was aware he was wearing the Giants hat, Bochy said. Thats pretty neat. Thats why Im wearing this. We appreciate their support. While Bochy wears a large hat size 8 1/8 equipment manager Mike Murphy put the 7 Niners cap in the stretcher so it would fit. Smith and the reigning NFC West champion 49ers (2-0) play Sunday at Minnesota. The Giants are closing in on their second NL West crown in three years after winning the World Series in 2010. So, theres plenty of Bay Area hype for San Franciscos teams right now. Bochy and reigning NFL Coach of the Year Jim Harbaugh have exchanged messages, too. Strange as it seems that two guys with the same name could win batting titles in the same season, its hardly the happy coincidence it sounds like. The good news is that baseball fans wont need a scorecard to tell Miguel and Melky Cabrera apart. A lab test will suffice. Through Wednesdays games, Detroits Cabrera, Miguel, was on pace to accomplish something even more historic. He was leading the American League in both batting average and RBIs, and was only one behind Texas Josh Hamilton 42-41 in the home-run race. And because Hamilton is battling a sinus problem that affects his vision, the Rangers are likely to use him sparingly the final weeks of the regular season, boosting Cabreras chances of winning a Triple Crown. Yet even if Miguel Cabrera becomes the first player to claim the trifecta since Bostons Carl Yastrzemski in 1967 and wins the leagues MVP award, too his achievements could still be overshadowed by the other Cabrera. Thats because San Franciscos Melky at 28, some 16 months younger than Miguel and no relation could very well win the NL batting title while serving a 50-game suspension handed down in August after a positive drug test. Major League Baseball commissioner Bud Selig has already weighed in on that very possibility, saying hes powerless to do anything about it. Well see how it all plays out, Selig told reporters after sitting for an interview for the YES Network. We generally dont interfere in that process. Well take a look at it at the end of the year. And look at it is about all Selig intends to do. You cant change records he said earlier in the interview, because once you get into that it would never stop. Hard to disagree with Bud on this one, since neither he nor all the blue-ribbon panels that investigated the games Supersized Era can say with certainty where the timeline begins or ends. Deciding how many tainted entries the record books hold would be trickier than answering how many ballplayers can dance on the tip of a hypodermic needle. For the same reason, Selig cant go back and void the results of Julys All-Star game, when Melky Cabreras contributions won him MVP honors and locked up home-field advantage for the NL in the World Series. (Wouldnt that be a kick in the shins if the Tigers and Giants wind up playing in it?) But even if there is little the commissioner can do, its not as though Melky Cabrera is getting off easy. He hasnt been seen much in San Francisco since last months suspension and the Giants apparently plan to keep it that way. The club isnt expected to bring Cabrera back and add him to the playoff roster, and probably wont re-sign him for next season. Since Cabrera becomes a free agent at the end of it, the hit to his reputation will probably translate into a much shorter contract with way fewer dollars than the $70 million or more he might have expected. Its hard to gauge how much respect hes lost in the clubhouse, though the few friends who reached out to him have yet to hear anything back. Most of his teammates are keeping their distance. No thoughts on that, Giants manager Bruce Bochy replied Thursday, when asked about Melky. Thats the last thing on my mind. On the other hand, just about everybody in baseball has been forced to keep tabs on the other Cabrera, especially opposing pitchers. Miguels home run in a 6-2 win Wednesday night over the visiting As not only helped the Tigers stay hard on the heels of the White Sox in the AL Central race; it left teammates used to his heroics in awe. Thats because his latest highlight moment came on an 0-2 fastball that Oakland pitcher Jim Miller had every intention of wasting. You just dont see that, said Detroit pitcher Justin Verlander, who was credited with the win. You execute your pitch, 94 (mph) up at his chin, and he hits a home run. Verlander, the reigning AL MVP, has no doubts who deserves that award this season. Its a debate Miguel Cabrera has so far refused to get involved in, saying only that it would be a dream. But right now, he said, I got to focus on trying to help us make the playoffs. Heres hoping hes successful, and that his turn in the spotlight of postseason baseball clears up any lingering confusion. Because the last thing Miguel Cabrera should have to worry about after a season like this one is hanging onto his good name.

Giants rout Panthers

They came in and slapped us around and dragged us to the ground a little bit, Rivera said. Hopefully, we learn from it a little bit. Hopefully, we learn from it and, hopefully, we dont like it and we come back focused. Mixing run and pass, the Giants dominated the opening half, outgaining the Panthers 303-125. Manning completed 19 of 25 passes for 208 yards in the first half, including a 14-yard touchdown pass to Martellus Bennett to cap the Giants game-opening drive and set the tone. It capped an eight-play, 80-yard drive and marked the third straight game the Panthers have given up a touchdown on an opponents first drive. For Rivera and the Panthers the first half was a nightmare. When you put yourself in a hole like that its tough trying to claw and scratch yourself back up, Rivera said. And thats really what happened.

Thats the type of game they want you to be in. Thats trouble. When you get behind they can cut those guys loose on the pass rush. Brown repeatedly bounced off tacklers and Barden had little trouble getting open against a Carolina defense that failed to pressure Manning. Brown ran 13 times for 71 yards and a touchdown last week against Tampa Bay and surpassed that total by the end of the first quarter with 77 yards on seven. Barden had 123 yards on seven catches at halftime. Before Thursday night, the fourth-year receiver had never managed more than nine catches for 94 yards receiving in a season. Any hopes that the Panthers would turn things around in the second half were slowed when rookie returner Adams fumbled trying to catch the opening kickoff, resulting in another field goal for Lawrence Tynes. Tynes finished with five field goals on the night. The Panthers didnt get on the board until midway through the third quarter when Newton leaped over the pile from a yard out. Newton said it wasnt what the Giants did but what the Panthers didnt do. Who wants to supports something that puts on a performance of embarrassment out there, and thats what that was, Newton said. If I was a fan of the Carolina Panthers I would be holding my head down in shame at the product that was out there. Newton said the Panthers problem was execution, not anything the Giants did to stop them. We have to fix it, Newton said. Seattles Golden Tate gets the attention for big block

RENTON, Wash. (AP) Golden Tate would rather be talked about because hes making catches or scoring touchdowns. This week, the Seattle wide receiver has gotten plenty of attention and very little of it for the three catches he had last Sunday against Dallas. Such is the situation Tate finds himself in after laying a block that flattened Cowboys linebacker Sean Lee and drew a fine from the NFL. I just have to deal with it, fix the problem, make sure it doesnt happen again, Tate said on Thursday. Its unfortunate that I got fined, but rules are rules. Tate was hit with a hefty fine from the league for his block on Lee that left the Dallas linebacker with an abrasion on his chin and helped define the Seahawks physical pounding of the Cowboys in a 27-7 victory last Sunday. Almost immediately after Tates block, the debate started about whether it was legal and if it would draw a fine. The play happened in the fourth quarter when Seattle quarterback Russell Wilson scrambled from the pocket with Lee in pursuit. Tate, who was running a pass route, circled back and caught Lee with a block the linebacker didnt see coming. Lee was sent flying backward with his cleats in the air. On Monday, Seattle coach Pete Carroll said he believed the block was perfectly legal and would not draw a fine. By Thursday, Carroll was trying to find out from the league why the block was illegal and how to avoid the situation in the future. We worked hard to understand what was going on with their evaluation of it. We worked behind the scenes and were still talking to the league to make sure we know because we need to teach our guys to stay within the guidelines, Carroll said. It was a great effort by Golden to make the block that he needed it to make, but unfortunately they saw that there was a little contact to the bottom of his facemask and perhaps his chin, and thats not OK. Why thats important to us is that we need to understand clearly how we can avoid doing that. Tate said he plans to appeal the fine and during the appeals process hopes to get a better understanding from the league of what needs to be different in the future. When I do my appeal Im going to ask them that What would you suggest I do so this doesnt happen again? Tate said. I never have intentions on hurting a player and always want to play within the rules. Thats a question thats going to come up when I do my appeal. Ultimately, Tate would prefer the conversation be strictly about catching passes than borderline hits. Lost in the debate about his block on Lee was what Tate brought to the Seahawks offense after missing the season opener at Arizona with a knee injury. All three of Tates catches went for first downs, including a fourthquarter, third-down reception that set up Seattle with a firstand-goal at the Dallas 3. Marshawn Lynch plunged in on the next play for the final score in the Seahawks victory. Getting consistent production out of Tate a secondround pick in 2010 finally started happening toward the end of last season. Of his 35 receptions last season, 19 came in the final five games. I think I kind of left off where I did the end of last year. I think I did some things positive. I think I did some things that I need to work on, Tate said. Im looking to play better than last week this week and keep progressing to be a dominant player at some point. Notes: Carroll believes the only player who might not be able to go Monday night against Green Bay is reserve CB Byron Maxwell (hamstring). LT Russell Okung, who was inactive against Dallas with a bone bruise in his left knee, was a full participant in practice on Thursday. ... Carroll came out in support of Tampa Bay coach Greg Schiano and the way the Buccaneers handled the kneeldown at the end of their loss to the Giants. I think it was a competitor competing and I dont think there is anything wrong with that. Thats exactly what you should do, try to win the game, and there is a chance to win the game on that play. I thought Greg did exactly the right thing.

OFFICIALS: FLA. mAN WANTEd TO COOK RARE SEA TURTLE TAMPA, Fla. (AP) -- A rare sea turtle that a Florida fisherman wanted to cook and eat has been released back into the wild. Officials at The Florida Aquarium say the fisherman snagged the Kemps ridley sea turtle in May. Instead of releasing it, he put the 15-pound juvenile turtle in a tank in his backyard in Tampa. Aquarium official Susan Coy tells The Tampa Tribune that the fisherman planned to cook and eat the endangered species, but a neighbor reported him to authorities. Its not unheard of for turtle meat to be used in dishes such as soups. Gary Morse, a spokesman for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, says the fisherman told investigators he didnt know the turtle was endangered. The turtle named Lucky was rehabilitated at the aquarium until Wednesday, when it was released. mAmmOTH SKELETON UP FOR AUCTION IN PARIS PARIS (AP) -- Looking for that must-have ornament for a cavernous living room or backyard lawn? Perk up, Sothebys is putting a complete Mammoth skeleton up for sale in Paris. The auction house plans the Oct. 2 sale as part of a collection of fossils, skeletons, meteors and minerals - and even a dinosaur egg and woolly rhinoceros skeleton - from the Kashiwagi museum in Japan. Sothebys said in a statement Thursday that the skeleton of Mammuthus primigenius, from Siberia, dates to the Middle Paleolithic period when Neanderthals roamed the earth. The Mammoth skeleton, which has been arranged in a bit of an upward-facing pose, measures 3.5 meters (11 1/2 feet) in height - just slightly taller than it is long. BEAGLE SURVIVES 70-FOOT FALL FROm NEW JERSEY BRIdGE BURLINGTON TOWNSHIP, N.J. (AP) -- A beagle named Brandi survived a 70-foot fall from a New Jersey bridge. The dog got away from its owner during a walk along the Burlington Riverfront Promenade Friday night. Bridge officer Rob Bittner saw Brandi walking up the Burlington-Bristol Bridge toward Pennsylvania. Bittner tells The Courier-Post of Cherry Hill he turned on his emergency lights to slow traffic and followed the dog. Bittner says Brandi was doing fine until she got to the top of the span and her paws felt a steel grate. The officer says Brandi jumped into the Delaware River as motorists tried to grab her. The beagles owner recovered her and took her to a veterinarian. Brandi was bruised around the abdomen, but didnt have any broken bones. STOWAWAY CAT BACK IN OHIO AFTER TRIP TO FLORIdA CIRCLEVILLE, Ohio (AP) -- An Ohio woman says the pet cat that sneaked into her luggage for a flight to Florida has returned home safely and seems relatively unaffected by his surprise vacation in Orlando. Ethel Maze tells The Circleville Herald that Bob-Bob the stowaway spent 10 hours in a suitcase before she opened it last week. She says he was lethargic and wet from perspiration, and she initially thought hed died. Eventually he perked up, and he spent the week in a crate at Mazes hotel. He rode in a carrier near Mazes seat for the return flight. Somehow the cat had made it through screening at Port Columbus International Airport. Gerald Gronowski had a flat tire east of Cleveland recently when a man named Christopher Manacci stopped to help. During the encounter, Gronowski began talking about another stranger eight years before who had helped him pull out a hook that got stuck in his hand while he was fishing. They then figured out that Manacci was that same man. He had been kayaking nearby. Gronowski tells The (Cleveland) Plain Dealer that he feels its now his job to help someone else. He also offered to take Manacci fishing, but Manacci says that considering the bad luck Gronowski has had fishing, they should go bowling instead. Arnold tells WMUR-TV that she and her boyfriend delivered the baby, named Katie, in their car. An EMT at the track then came to help, and the couple and the baby were taken to a hospital. CHICAGO LOOKING FOR GOATS TO GRAZE AT OHARE CHICAGO (AP) -- The Chicago Department of Aviation is looking for a few good goats. WFLD-TV reports that Chicago recently put out a bid for someone to supply goats to trim the grass at OHare International Airport. The bid also calls for a goat herder. Amy Malick is the departments point person for sustainability, and she says the city is looking at a pilot program of 30 goats to eat grass and weeds in one, hard-to-mow area. She says the area is outside the security fence, so theres no danger of goats straying onto the runways. Malick adds that the department also worries about pollution produced by mechanical mowers, so theyre turning to the four-legged variety. Atlanta recently started a similar effort, and San Francisco has been using goats for years.

Assist with Registration, Recruitment, and various student support services under the Student Services Division. Conduct drop-out and withdrawal reports and present recommendations. Advise and counsel probationary, suspended, and at-risk students. Work closely with Instruction and other services on campus to support the student population. Provide data on student progress and academic problems as needed by the administration or instructional staff. Write reports and evaluations on program service effectiveness. Teach at least two College and Life Planning (CLP) courses. Participate in regular and ad-hoc committee functions set up by the Dean of Student Services. Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor and Dean of Student Services.
Minimum Qualifications Incumbent must have a Masters Degree in Counseling, Psychology, Social Work or related area; and at least five (5) years of counseling experience in high school or at the college level. The incumbent must be knowledgeable with career, academic, aptitude and personality testing, and also be familiar with using a computer for word processing and spreadsheet programs. THREATS HONOLULU (AP) A former U.S. serviceman arrested in Honolulu for sending emails from Thailand threatening to kill Vice President Joe Biden has pleaded guilty. Justin Alan Woodward withdrew his not guilty plea during a hearing in federal court Thursday. Assistant U.S. Attorney Thomas Brady says Woodward faces a maximum sentence of five years in prison and a $250,000 fine when hes sentenced in January. Woodward was arrested last year at the Honolulu airport when he arrived on a flight from Bangkok. According to the criminal complaint, he told agents he wrote the threatening messages, including one sent to the White House website. The IP address was traced to a public Wi-Fi access point in Chiang Mai, Thailand. He told officials he was discharged from the U.S Marine Corps for bipolar disorder. HAWAII UNEmPLOYmENT dROPS TO LOWEST RATE SINCE 2009 HONOLULU (AP) Hawaiis seasonally adjusted unemployment rate last month was the lowest since 2009. The state Department of Labor and Industrial Relations said Thursday Hawaiis seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in August dropped to 6.1 percent, down from Julys revised rate of 6.3 percent. The state says the last time Hawaii had this low of an unemployment rate was in January 2009. There were about 600,000 people with jobs last month and nearly 39,000 thousand without jobs. The biggest job gains in August were in the sectors of education and health services, construction and leisure and hospitality. Nationally, Augusts seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 8.1 percent, a decline from 8.3 percent in July. CHINESE HOLIdAYS EXPECTEd TO BOOST HAWAII TOURISm HONOLULU (AP) A more than weeklong Chinese holiday is expected to boost Hawaii tourism at a time thats usually slow for the industry. Chinese National Day comes soon after MidAutumn Festival this year, giving many Chinese more than a weeklong holiday starting this month. Hawaii Tourism Authority Vice President of Brand Management David Uchiyama says the Chinese market continues to do well for the islands. The authority projects Chinese arrivals in Hawaii for October to be up 35.3 percent from a year ago. Hilton Hawaiian Village spokeswoman Cynthia Rankin says the resort has had to turn away several Chinese groups due to high room occupancy forecasts. Theyre now only taking reservations from individual travelers. CEREmONY HONORING POW/mIA TO BE HELd AT PUNCHBOWL HONOLULU (AP) Former prisoner-ofwar and retired Army Col. William Reeder, Jr. will deliver the keynote address at a Honolulu ceremony this week honoring prisoners of war and those still missing in action. Reeder was shot down and captured by North Vietnamese forces in May 1972 while on a combat mission in South Vietnam. He was released the following March. The Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command is hosting the ceremony at 10 a.m. Friday at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific. The ceremony at Punchbowl cemetery is free and open to the public. Its being held to commemorate National POW/MIA Recognition Day, which is observed on the third Friday each September.

People told me that when I fell in love with someone it would be easier to let my male friendships fall by the wayside. This hasnt been the case. These friendships are the ones I prefer now more than ever. The conversations are better. I find men more emotionally stable than women. They also let me talk without interrupting to give their opinions as women do. I love my fiance dearly and he has been incredibly understanding about this, but I can tell it upsets him. I have been known to talk all night with friends, especially when Im overwhelmed. My fiance is hurt that I dont come to him with these issues, but hes in medical school and has his own stress. Do I need to eliminate these friendships that come so naturally to me for the sake of my husband-to-be? Is it inappropriate for me to have close male friends after Im married? -- PREFERS MEN dEAR PREFERS mEN: Why are you presenting the issue as all or nothing? Its not. Nor is it inappropriate for you to keep close male friendships after you marry -- because that has been your lifelong practice. However, I do think some behavior modification is in order. The first thing you should do is cut out the all-night dump sessions with these men. For one thing, the man you marry should be your BEST friend and the person you go to first to express your concerns when youre overwhelmed. This is part of intimacy, and he may be feeling hurt and shut out because you are denying that to him. For another, he may have concerns of his own dEAR ABBY: Im engaged and being married soon. I have always had very close non-romantic that hed like to discuss with you. Being on the relationships with males. I was raised around guys, phone all night talking to someone else is really so its natural for me. neglectful of the man you love. dEAR ABBY: I am a 31-year-old wife and mother. My husband, Jake, works 40-plus hours a week, while I am a stay-at-home mom. My daughter, who is almost 3, keeps me on my toes. In the evenings and on weekends, Jake does yard work or works in the garden. I hate it because Im with our daughter all day, every day, and he expects me to watch her while hes outside working. I dislike yard and garden work and dont like being outside unless I am completely comfortable. I also have health/physical issues that keep me from being as active as I would like. Every weekend I feel my resentment and anger growing over this issue. Jake says it is necessary for us to have a garden, and I agree. But why must I have all the responsibility of caring for our daughter even on weekends? Id like it if Jake would stay in with us and give up on some of the outside activities. This is something we argue about at least once a week. What do you suggest? -- SECOND TO A SHRUB IN OREGON dEAR SECONd TO A SHRUB: While tending to the yard and the garden may be necessary, it is also very important for your husband to devote some time to nurturing his relationship with his daughter. Mention that fact to him, and while youre at it, tell him she should be at least as important to him as the tomato plants and the zinnias. You should not be saddled with all the child care responsibilities 24/7. Marriages are like gardens. If theyre not given care and feeding, they will wither as yours appears to be doing.
