International telecommunicationunion (ITU)
ITU was founded in Paris in 1865, as theInternational Telegraph Union to co-ordinate and monitor the development of the telegraphy, which was a new invention.
With the development of the other system,particularly the wireless radio, the namewas changed to its present, theInternational Telecommunication Union
In 1947, ITU entered into an agreementwith the United Nation (UN) and therebybecame a specialized agency fortelecommunication.
 
The ITU Secretariat is in Geneva, and works atvarious levels
The supreme body in ITU is the PlenipotentiaryConference. Basically, through various administrativeconferences ITU make decision regarding its variousfunctions.
The four permanent organizations of ITU are theGeneral Secretariat, the International FrequencyRegistration Board (IFRB), The InternationalTelegraph and Telephone Consultative Committee,and the International Radio Consultative Committee.
 
The main functions of ITU are to:
(1) Allocate frequencies to avoid interference.
(2) co-ordinate efforts to eliminate interference
(3) foster the creation of telecommunication in newlyindependent or developing countries.
(4) promote safety measures and
(5) undertake studies in the area of telecommunication
In the context on NWICO, ITU has assumed adifferent role and perception.
