I see plight, despair and overcrowded living.

I also see people that had no choice in where they lived, worked or what changed. I see an area of New York that had to be disease and crime filled, and also a very horrible place to make your way in. This particular time period forced those of like religions, race and social backgrounds to stick together. It also shows that women were not among the working class because most if not all of the street vendors are men. Overcrowded streets and living arrangements were due to the overflow of immigrants coming into America in hopes of a new opportunity and a new life. Due to the over-population crime rates sky-rocketed because of a lack of work, and the fact that most immigrants couldnt understand the native tongue making it near impossible to communicate what they needed.
