September 2011
September 3
The army build a 3-metre-high separation barrier
around the Israeli embassy in Giza.
September 7
The Military Council suspend the broadcasting licences
of new privately-owned satellite channels and threaten
the presenters, whom they accuse of inciting violence.
September 9
A large demonstration marches from Tahrir Square to
the High Court building in protest against the ongoing
trials of civilians in military courts, and a million-strong
demonstration reclaims Tahrir Square from the police,
who have occupied it throughout Ramadan and the
Eid holidays. The demonstrators demand a speedy
return to civilian rule and fulfilment of the revolution's
demands. Particularly prominent in the demonstration
are groups of Ultras, after recent clashes between the
Ahly Ultras with Central Security forces see a number
of Ultras members arrested.
The Israeli embassy is besieged by demonstrators angry
at the death of two Egyptian border soldiers at Israeli
hands and the insulting response of the government
and the Military Council. The protestors destroy the
wall built by the military and storm the building,
ultimately causing the ambassador to leave Egypt.
Violent confrontations between demonstrators, the
army and security forces in front of Giza Security
Directorate leave one dead and tens injured, and
demonstrators embark upon a sit-in in front of the
Israeli embassy.
September 10
The Military Council announces that the Emergency
Law will be renewed and its scope broadened to cover
the new crime of spreading rumours.
September 24
Field Marshal Tantawi gives evidence at Mubarak's
trial, which is leaked despite the attempts at secrecy,
testifying that he received no orders from Mubarak to
kill protestors.
September 27
The Military Council announces that parliamentary
elections will begin on the 28th November.
September 29
Security forces storm the offices of Al Jazeera Live
Egypt for the second time, confiscating equipment.

stand for election.

On the 'Friday of One Demand', crowds in Tahrir
Square demand that the military hand over power by
April 2012. Despite having made the call for a
demonstration against the Al-Selmy supra-
constitutional principles document, Islamist groups
leave the square in the evening, deserting a sit-in
which around a hundred of those injured in the
revolution have been holding since November 16th.
November 19
Police forces break up the Tahrir Square sit-in by force.
Clashes break out when revolutionaries descend on the
square in large numbers with confrontations between
demonstrators and the military continuing throughout
the day. The military take the square with armoured
cars then retreat.
The army make heavy use of armoured cars, birdshot,
live ammunition and tear gas during what comes to be
known as the Mohamed Mahmoud Street massacre.
676 are injured by the end of the day; amongst their
number are many who have lost eyes, such as Ahmed
Harrara and Malek Mostafa.
Demonstrations take place around the Security
Directorate in Alexandria and two are martyred by
sniper fire.
The Military Council announce the establishment of a
'consultative council' to assist in governmental affairs.
November 20
Bloody clashes between soldiers and demonstrators
continue in Tahrir Square. Military police and Central
Security forces storm the square, clearing it of
protestors and setting alight the tents of the sit-in, but
retreat in the face of demonstrators' determination to
return.
Video clips appear which show soldiers dragging the
dead body of a protestor along the ground and
throwing it off the side of the road near a rubbish
heap.
The cabinet release a statement reaffirming their
commitment to holding parliamentary elections on the
appointed date, November 28th, and claiming that
recent tensions have been deliberately manufactured
in order to cause the elections to be postponed or

gratitude to officers and soldiers who have behaved
with 'the utmost self-restraint'.
November 21
Confrontations carry on throughout the day, whilst
demonstrators continue to pour into Tahrir Square.
Doctors at the field hospital say the tear gas currently
being used is stronger than that used so far; whilst many
have been badly injured by birdshot, particularly in the
eyes, others have sustained bullet wounds.
The SCAF release a statement inviting political forces to
discuss how best to resolve the crisis and expressing
regret at the deaths and injuries of protestors. They ask
for caution and calm to assist the peaceful transition to
democracy. The Council also order the Interior Ministry
to set up a committee to investigate the recent violence.
130 diplomats sign a statement demanding that the
military hand over power by the end of 2012.
November 22
Tens of thousands flock to Tahrir Square and to town
squares around the country to stand by the
revolutionaries in a demonstration for 'national
salvation'.
In a televised speech, Field Marshal Tantawi affirms that
the armed forces do not see themselves as an
alternative to a democratically elected government, and
claims that the military have kept their promise never to
fire on the people. The army remain committed, he
says, to holding parliamentary elections, inaugurating
the new constitution, and finally holding presidential
elections, as was decided by the 19th March
referendum. He alludes to the possibility of a
referendum on the SCAF remaining in power.
The Military Council accept the resignation of Sharaf's
government.
The Military Council announce that parliamentary
elections are on timetable and presidential elections
will take place no later than the end of June 2012.
In message number 82 on the SCAF Facebook page,
Tantawi announces he is transferring responsibility for
investigations into the events of Maspero and
Mohamed Mahmoud Street from the Military
Prosecutor to the civilian Public Prosecution Office.
November 23
Intermittent clashes between revolutionaries and the

Mubarak, is appointed prime minister and charged
with forming a new government.
November 25
On 'Last Chance Friday' the stages in Tahrir Square
have disappeared, to be replaced by unified demands
for the military to relinquish power immediately to a
'national salvation' government and for parliamentary
and presidential elections to be held as soon as
possible. The majority of political forces participate,
with the notable exception of the Muslim Brotherhood
and their party the Freedom and Justice Party.
A smaller demonstration in Abbasiya Square of a few
thousand SCAF supporters calls for the Council to
remain in power until the presidential elections.
The Ministry of Health's final count puts the number of
martyrs at 41 and the injured at 3,800.
Sit-ins in Tahrir Square and in front of the cabinet
building protest against Ganzouri's appointment and
demand that SCAF hand over power immediately.
November 26
Central Security vehicles attempting to pass through
the street where the cabinet building is located are
obstructed by the sit-in and forced to turn back. A
nineteen-year-old is killed by a bullet to the groin fired
by the retreating police.

A police sniper accused of shooting protesters in the
eyes during the events of Mohamed Mahmoud street
turns himself in.
December 4
Demonstrators in Tahrir Square debate whether to end
their sit-in or join the sit-in outside the cabinet building.
December 7
The Ganzouri government is sworn in, and eleven
political movements decamp from Tahrir Square to join
the sit-in outside the cabinet building, refusing to
recognise Ganzouri or his government.
December 10
Tahrir Square is opened to traffic after 20 days of closure.
The sit-in outside the cabinet building continues.
December 14
80 of the cabinet sit-in participants suffer food
poisoning after eating minced meat sandwiches
distributed by an unknown woman. Rumours spread
that the meat was deliberately poisoned; subsequent
testing reveals that the meat was rotten.
December 16
At dawn on Friday, military forces guarding the People's
Assembly and the Shoura Council kidnap a
demonstrator from the sit-in and return him after brutal
torture. Demonstrators pelt the soldiers with stones,
and are met with a violent response. The protestors'
tents are burnt down and intermittent confrontations
last all day; the army use water hoses and clubs and
hurl rocks onto protestors from on top of public
buildings. By the evening, 255 are injured and three
martyred, amongst them Sheikh Emad Effat, a senior
cleric at Dar Al-Iftaa (the Al-Azhar body which issues
religious edicts) who is killed by a bullet to the chest.
The military police target field hospitals and forcibly
remove journalists and television crews, throwing their
cameras from the balconies of buildings.

The government and SCAF blame events on a third party.
The military storm Tahrir Square in violent pursuit of
demonstrators, later retreating.

building is set alight.
December 18
Confrontations continue in Sheikh Rihan Street, Tahrir
Square and Qasr al-Aini Street. Central Security forces
replace the army in Sheikh Rihan Street. Demonstrators
attempt to save precious books from the fire at the
Institut d'gypte.
The military arrest 164 people and transfer them to the
Public Prosecution Office to face charges of rioting,
attacking security forces and vandalising a public
building. One of those arrested dies of his wounds
whilst in detention.
Tantawi visits some of the wounded at the Armed
Forces Medical Complex, only to be thrown out by a
furious female patient.
Politicians and newly-elected parliamentarians attempt
to intervene in confrontations between revolutionaries
and security forces, but are unsuccessful.
December 19
Clashes continue for the fourth consecutive day.
The Military Council hold a press conference in which
they deny all accusations of violence against protestors
and restate their commitment to a democratic
transition. They express regret over recent civilian
deaths and blame unnamed forces for attempting to
incite conflict. General Adel Emara threatens to
remove journalists from the conference for taking too
long in their questions.
A group of political movements organise a counter-
conference to show video evidence of the military's
crimes throughout the events of recent days.
December 20
Central Security storm the square in the early hours of
the morning, injuring numerous demonstrators and
burning their tents.
Thousands of women crowd the square in the early
evening to denounce the military's attacks on female
protestors. The barbaric beating and stripping of the
young woman whose blue bra has by now become
famous is described as the 'shame of Egypt's men'.
The Military Council release message 91 on their
Facebook page, apologising to Egyptian women for
the violation of their rights committed by the military
over the course of recent days.
Activists and revolutionaries prepare a campaign to
expose the SCAF entitled Kaziboun, or 'Liars'.

Assembly are rejected by the Muslim Brotherhood.

The day is free from confrontations, but marked by the
death of Mohamed Mostafa, a young engineering
student at Ein Shams University, national tennis player
and member of the Ahly Ultras. He dies from a
gunshot wound sustained the previous day, bringing
the death toll to 15.
Following Mostafa's funeral, demonstrations organised
by students at Ein Shams University spread to other
universities. In the stands at Ahly's next match, the
Ultras create an enormous portrait of the martyr with
their bodies, and chants denouncing the military and
demanding freedom resound throughout the match.
SCAF warn of plots to bring down the state.
December 22
