In this lesson, students will be connecting their actions to how others feel using apples as an analogy. While apples appear different from the outside, inside they are similar, and if you are careless with an apple, it ends up bruised and dented. People are the same way. If we are unkind or disrespectful, people can have their feelings bruised. Materials: red & green apples (enough so pairs can have one of each plus one extra set for modeling) a knife a large bowl chart paper markers, crayons, or colored pencils post-it notes pencils a clear container or plastic bag scissors glue sticks or glue Activities (with simplified instructions): 1. Comparing red & green apples using a Venn Diagram a. Provide pairs with two apples (1 red, 1 green). Have them examine the apples and discuss what they notice. Go around and cut the apples in half as students work. b. Allow partners to cut out and sort similarities and differences into the Venn Diagram (this can be done as a class first, if needed. The anchor chart pieces are included. 2. Connections to actions a. As partners finish #1, have them work on the think about it. b. Take the extra set of apples (cut in half) and put them into a plastic bag or container. Have students pass these around or play a tossing game with the bag. Do not treat this bag of apples with care. Leave them on your desk or in a sunny location while you discuss their answers to the think about it. c. Put students into 2-4 groups to examine the apples in the bag. Discuss what they notice about the apples.

d. Allow students to draw and write about their observations. Then have them get with their original partner to discuss how this experiment might be connected to how we treat others. 3. Analyzing decisions a. Discuss how people are like apples. Guide students to connect to how we look different on the outside, but we all have feelings and want to be treated with kindness and respect. Discuss how feelings can be "bruised" just like the apples when people aren't kind or respectful. b. Have students cut and sort the behaviors into kind and unkind. (Anchor chart pieces are provided if you'd like to do this as a group.) c. Students should select one of the behaviors they chose as unkind. Use this behavior to fill out the Making Better Choices sheet. (There are also parts to the anchor chart included. You can have students write their answers on post it notes to use for the anchor chart as well.)
