Gar Southham survives the Grusandian invasion and enlists to fight back. In the process Corporal Southham is transferred to a new kind of unit–Armored Steam and promoted to sergeant. Commanding his armored steam vehicle, he rescues a woman, Wesha, who turns out to be from his home town that's now in enemy held territory. When he loses his assistant gunner, he foolishly allows her to fill the position even though she's a civilian so she can get revenge on the enemy as well. Though she uncovers a threat to their lives, she's later found out by an officer who gives her the choice of being shot as a spy or enlisting. Meanwhile, Sergeant Gar is demoted back to corporal.
Though Wesha is assigned to a river supply boat only to be later wounded and mistaken by a captured Grusandian for the Morder Hoofenfrau, their paths cross again when Gar's platoon of armored steam vehicles makes a big offensive push against a hidden Grusandian base on the coast and is attacked by supporting naval ships operating in the gulf. Wesha's flotilla of five river supply boats emerges from the river's delta to make a desperate charge against a better armed and better armored foe. On the opposite shore of the river, the Morder Hoofenfrau busies herself caring for a wounded Alurian and mops up any Grusandian survivors who make it to shore. When she's finally rescued, she's busy killing yet one more Grue soldier who stumbled onto her hidden shelter while retreating from advancing Alurian forces.
