ABSTRACT

This thesis project examines the importance of mythology in a healthy human culture. This project’s goal is to demonstrate the difficulty contemporary religion is having remaining relevant in a rapidly changing world. While science has had some limited success maintaining a relevant mythic framework in this fluid environment, it does not provide humanity a stable foundation for a modern mythos. To realize a global mythos that supports the needs of modern man, a hybrid mythology that combines the social community and life roles found in religion, and the re-adjusting worldview of the scientific method must be cultivated.

 ABSTRACT
This thesis project examines the importance of mythology in a healthy
human culture. This project‘s goal is to demonstrate the
difficulty contemporaryreligion is having remaining relevant in a rapidly changing world. While sciencehas had some limited success maintaining a relevant mythic framework in thisfluid environment, it does not provide humanity a stable foundation for a modernmythos. To realize a global mythos that supports the needs of modern man, ahybrid mythology that combines the social community and life roles found inreligion, and the re-adjusting worldview of the scientific method must becultivated. After publishing a multimedia report on the
Modern Mythology
website, and reviewing the site traffic, it is clear that further study of this topic iswarranted.

 ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
This was the single most difficult thing I have ever done. Without theadvice, encouragement, and assistance of my instructors (
Dr. Painter, Jeff
Sharon, Eileen O’Malley, Christi Davis and Erika Barker
) the document you havebefore you would have never existed. A tremendous about of thanks goes out tomy wife Ginger. Her tremendous support, encouragement, and sacrifice got methrough
the last year and a half. I‘d also like to note t
he assistance of my sister-in-law Patti provided the last few stressful weeks. Thank you all.I would also like to thank Joseph Campbell for introducing me to myblissful interest in mythology, and my grandfather for instilling in me my love for writing. But most of all, I want to thank God. I would never be able write this thesis
if it hadn‘t been for his guidance, intervention,
and inspiration. While I am notimplying these words are of divine inspiration, I can personally attest to thedifficulty of trying to find something if your eyes are closed. If I had not alwaysbeen searching for some kind of meaning to existence, the power of myth wouldhave never revealed itself to me.I believe that existence is much more than a string of random events, stretched out the length of our lifespans. It is only when strings of different colorsand lengths meet, cross, and knot together, that a pattern in life begins to
emerge. I‘m not going to pr
etend I have any idea what the patterns mean, or which one is the best. For me, those kinds of thoughts were always immaterial.
