Brighton House Wins Sustainable Business Award fromSussex Business Awards
Outstanding achievement by a Brighton-based guesthouse in reducing theimpact of their business on the environment

– Brighton House, the historicRegency Brighton guesthouse opposite Brighton’s West Pier, has won theSustainable Business Award from Brighton-based Sussex Business Awards.Lucho and Christine Zuidema, owners of the hotel, were presented with thecoveted award at a recent glittering event, hosted by Sussex BusinessAwards 2008/09 at Copthorne Effingham Park Hotel, Gatwick.The Sustainable Business Award is granted to those companies that havedemonstrated outstanding achievement in reducing the impact of their business on the environment. In this regard, Brighton House has set a veryhigh ‘green’ standard; healthy and environmentally friendly measures havebeen implemented in every possible way, yet without any sacrifice to guests’comfort.These include:
Breakfast is predominantly organic and locally sourced with manypleasures such as wild salmon, organic hams and local Sussex jams.
Electricity is supplied from renewable sources.
Long life low wattage light bulbs are used wherever possible.
Having recently undergone a complete refurbishment, BrightonHouse’s insulation is of the highest possible standard.
A central heating control system that restricts the heating of unoccupied rooms has recently been installed.
 
A sedum roof (green roof) has been implemented on the recentextension to the kitchen which both increases green space andprovides improved insulation.
As much as possible is recycled, namely glass, paper, cartons, tins,and tetra packaging, and all bio-degradable waste is processedthrough a wormery which, in turn, provides excellent and rich compost.
All rooms are provided with two waste baskets and guests are asked toseparate recyclable material from non-recyclable.
All cleaning materials and detergents are sourced from companies thatproviding ecological solutions, such as Ecover.
The company car has been converted to run on Liquid Petroleum Gas(LPG).
