Rocks Activity
Time: 15 minutes
Goal: Identify attitudes that have an impact on the lives of people with disabilities
Materials: A backpack; 30 river rocks (the size that will fit into a persons hand) ; collect 30 comments written by people with disabilities (one sentence each); write each comment on a piece of paper and use a rubber band to attach each comment to a rock. Put the rocks in the backpack. Introduction to activity: Green Mountain Self-Advocates has 21 local groups throughout Vermont. We have over 600 members who have an intellectual and developmental disabilities. We have been collecting stories and comments from our members, examples of the attitudes and actions that people with disabilities face every day. We are going to pass around a backpack loaded with rocks. Each rock has a story on it. Take out a rock read what it says or ask the person next to you to read it. Then pass the bag on to the next person.
What if you made an embarrassing mistake and everybody where you work and live, including your family knows it?
What if people tried to run your life instead of letting you make choices? I stutterand people just answer for me. I just need time to answer.
Whispering about meI can still hear you, whether or not I am able to tell you with words.
People care about me and want to protect me. And I appreciate that, but I dont want to protected from living my life.
But we encourage people to be proud of who they are and that includes having a disability.
The real burden is the attitudes, words and actions of others. That is what weighs us down. Any thoughts about what you heard?

For example, it may be easy for someone to assume that people who have limited speech dont put much thought into the world. But using other ways to communicate, such as Facilitated or Augmentative Communication, can bust that myth. That person may appear to not understand by first impression when in reality; they are expressing themselves in a different way.
Keep this in mind when you interact with persons with disabilities. When it comes to intelligence, everybody is in their own way. One reason kids with disabilities are not included is because people make false assumptions about their abilities to learn and grow. Doug Biklen said, The question is no longer who can be included or who can learn, but how can we achieve inclusive education. We begin by presuming competence.
The impact of learning to speak up and have a voice has been quite meaningful for me. I have typed life goals and dreams that have actually come true. This would never have happened without FC.
Hope is essential for dealing out success. When I first met Kyle I felt his despair and anguish with time lost - he did not have hope. He came to a FC workshop I was helping to teach. Kyle could not enter the room that first day and stayed downstairs the whole time. On the next workshop he came in the room but stood in the back the whole time and on the third day he sat with his team. The next year Kyle hit the road running. Thoughts that had been trapped inside for years had a place to go. Letting out lost thoughts is moving out of despair into life and fulfilling lifes hope. With a strong voice you can move from anguish and lost time darkness into a world of fun and life.

Description: To prepare for the fishbowl, ask the fishbowl self-advocates to sit in a circle in the middle of the room. Your class or support staff, or the observers," should sit in a larger circle around the fishbowl self-advocates.
Instructions: The following steps are followed for the fishbowl activity: One important ground rule: During the fishbowl, observers are not allowed to speak. Their job is to listen and learn from the fishbowl self-advocates. Mention that later the observers will have an opportunity to discuss any issues that come up. If possible, assign one of the fishbowl self-advocates the role of facilitator. It will be her or his responsibility to ask questions, facilitate the fishbowl discussion, and make sure everyone has an opportunity to talk.
For the most part, fishbowl participants should have an opportunity to take the conversation where they want - or need - it to go. If it becomes necessary to push the conversation along, possible prompts include the following:
Bumper Stickers
The purpose of this exercise is to dream of a society without negative attitudes towards people with disabilities. For this exercise, everyone works together to create a bumper sticker made up of positive and powerful words. This bumper sticker will reflect the attitudes society should hold of people with disabilities. Have fun and remember the object here is expression and creativity.
