Executive Summary
This paper describes the evolution of competitiveintelligence (CI) in Spain by looking at the specializedliterature available on the subject and analyzing howCI has been adopted and developed in Spanish firms.The second part of the paper introduces the keyfindings of a survey carried out at the beginning of 2004. Multinational firms and identified best practicefirms were studied and compared against an identicalCI framework. The paper concludes with a descriptionof the potential barriers to full development of CI inSpain and some of the conditions required in order forthis development to be achieved. A perspective for thefuture is also introduced.

 , Ph.D., is an Associate Professorof Business Administration at the University PompeuFabra, Barcelona. Having earned an MBA from theUniversity of California in Los Angeles (UCLA), he holdsa Ph.D. in Business Administration from the AutonomousUniversity of Barcelona. He is the Director of the Part-time MBA Program and of the Diploma of BusinessManagement at the IDEC, the center for continuouseducation of the University Pompeu Fabra. He is theauthor of several articles and the books including,
