Electricity is a source of energy that is

produced by the flow of electrons through a

conductor such as a wire, resulting in a flow of
current
How is electricity
made ?
Using some sources of
energy to move this
handle...such as
wind,solar etc .....

 Nuclear energy
 Geothermal energy
 Biomass energy
 Tidal energy
The solar panels uses PV [ photovoltaic] cells
which is made of silicon ,traps The light from
the sun producing electricity.
Fossil fuels like coal is burnt in the power
stations to heat the water which In turn
produces steam which turns the turbines
generating electricity.
The strong winds move the turbine which In
turn gives electricity
Nuclear
power

The uranium atoms reacts with neutrons to release

Very high energy .In the form of heat which used to
generate electricity.
GEOTHERMAL
ENERGY

The men dig down under the earth, the boiling water
is brought to the surface of the earth were they use
the steam to generate electricity.
BIOMASS ENERGY

ANIMALS POO AND PLANT WASTES SUCH AS

WOOD ARE BURNT TO GENERATE ELECTRICITY
TIDAL ENERGY

ese turbines are moved by the strong tides and wav

ich helps to make electricity.
RENEWABLE
&
NON-RENEWABLE
SOURCES OF ENERGY
What is renewable
energy?
Renewable energy is energy generated
from natural resources—such a sunlight ,wind
, rain, tides and geothermal heat—which are
renewable
What is non-renewable energy?
Non –renewable energy is
energy generated from
natural resources that cannot
be produced or re -grown or
reused at the rate at which
we use them e.g fossil fuels
such as coal and petroleum
and also nuclear fuels.
ELECTRICITY
&
SAFETY
Always pull the plug out and not by the cord
Do not overload a circuit
This can cause the socket to get hotter and hotter
This creates a fire hazard
Do not touch damaged plugs
Unplug appliances before you clean them and
when they are not in use.
Do not poke small items into electrical
appliances
Keep water away from sockets and electrical
appliances
Spot the
dangers in the
next slide
1.Don’t play near power lines/pylons
2.Make sure when flying a kite not to do so next
to a power line.
3.If the kite does become caught let go
immediately and do not attempt to recover it.
4.Beware of electrical wires near trees
5.If electrical wires are brought down in a storm,
do not touch them and call the electricity
company urgently.
6.Don’t fly toys in rain or a storm as they may
conduct electricity. Especially if hit by lightning.
1.Electricity leaves power plant.
2. Voltage is increased at a ‘step up’ substation.
3.Transmitted through a power line to the area
where it needs to go.
4.The voltage is ‘stepped down’ once it reaches
there.
5. from the second substation it is distributed via
power lines- this may be underground or
overhead.
6.It reaches our homes and workplaces.
