BALTIMORE (AP) The regular NFL officials returned to work Thursday night, and sure enough, their first game back came down to a Hail Mary pass. Two of them, actually. The Baltimore Ravens never trailed in a 23-16 victory over the winless Cleveland Browns, who took some of the attention away from the regular officials in this duel between AFC North rivals. Down 23-16, Cleveland began its final drive with 1:05 to go on its own 10. Rookie Brandon Weeden moved the Browns to the Baltimore 33 before a fourth-down pass into the end zone fell incomplete. But a personal foul penalty on Paul Kruger gave Cleveland one more chance. That pass sailed out of the end zone. The final sequence was not unlike the controversial ending of Monday nights Green Bay-Seattle game, when the final pass was ruled a touchdown. That play, and the furor it created, hastened negotiations that ended the lockout. Joe Flacco went 28 for 46 for 356 yards, threw one touchdown and ran for another. Yet, it wasnt until Cary Williams returned an interception 63 yards for a score at the end of the third quarter that the Ravens (3-1) put some distance between themselves and the young Browns (0-4). A lockout of the leagues regular officials ended late Wednesday, bringing about the exit of the unpopular replacement refs. And so, finally, the tenured officials were in place for Week 4. As they walked onto the field hours before the game, the officiating crew received a round of applause and shouts of encouragement from fans in the lower sections. Head linesman Wayne Mackie and line judge Jeff Seeman both tipped their caps to acknowledge the support. And then, before the pregame coin flip, referee Gene Steratore greeted the players at midfield by saying, Good evening, men, its good to be back. Many in the sellout crowd of 70,944 stood and roared their approval. The fans waited until the third quarter to boo the officials. On a 13-yard completion from Weeden to Benjamin Watson, Ravens safety Bernard Pollard was called for a helmet-to-helmet hit. The crowd jeered the call, but replays appeared to confirm the penalty.

ABOARD AIR FORCE ONE (AP) How important is it to get the NFLs regular referees back on the job? The White House calls it a great day for America. Without prompting, President Barack Obamas spokesman, Jay Carney, on Thursday applauded news of a deal between that the National Football League and the referees union. The presidents very pleased that the two sides have come together, Carney said, adding, Its a great day for America. The underwhelming performance of replacement officials has drawn the ire of fans, players and politicians. A blown call at the end of Mondays game cost the Green Bay Packers a win. Carney said the focus can now return to the games, not the officiating. Republican Mitt Romney, campaigning in Virginia, was asked Thursday what he thought about referees coming back to work. I sure hope they do, Romney said, seemingly unsure that the dispute had been settled.

DENVER (AP) The men in stripes have drawn so much attention this season that some interesting developments on the football field have gone largely unnoticed, like a big spike in field goal accuracy. NFL teams combined for a record 2,287 points in the first three weeks of the season thanks to a record 248 touchdowns. Kickers have done their part in this proliferation of points, converting 182 field goal attempts and missing just 15 for a 92.4 percent clip the best three-week start ever. The three-week mark tends to be a precursor for the entire season, with the final accuracy rate dipping two or three percentage points as the weather gets worse and the pressure rises. That means the record set in 2008 of 84.5 percent could be obliterated this season. The league-wide field goal percentage last season was 82.9 percent, second-highest all-time. Through three weeks last season, the number was 85.8 percent, according to STATS LLC. If this years figure drops a similar 2.9 percentage points, it would end up at 89.5 percent, an enormous jump, statistically speaking. Denver Broncos kicker Matt Prater, the most accurate kicker in league history from 50 yards and out, said he thinks this years spike is the culmination of several factors ranging from better athletes to improved coaching and superior training. Guys are just getting better and better, Prater said. You get guys who are veterans in there and they learn from their mistakes and dont want to repeat them. Yet, its not just the icy veined veterans who are nailing their kicks. Kickers coming out of college are having immediate success, too, much like the better-prepared rookie quarterbacks who no longer have to bide their time as backups. Heading into this weekends slate beginning with Thursday nights Cleveland-Baltimore game, the Ravens Justin Tucker, St. Louis Greg Zuerlein and Minnesotas Blair Walsh were a combined 22-for-22 with each rookie having kicked at least a 55-yarder. Tucker and Walsh have game-winners already. Tuckers beat New England 31-30 last weekend as time expired and Walshs came in overtime against Jacksonville after he kicked a 55-yarder as time expired in regulation. Theres more camps for kids coming up the ranks now, Prater said. You can get a good head start on it. During their high school years, both Walsh and Tucker attended kicking camps in California run by Chris Sailer, who kicked for UCLA in the 1990s. Kickers are also in the weight room more, employ specialized training and superior techniques, kick on more favorable surfaces, generally are better coached and are used more effectively and efficiently on game day. They benefit from better athleticism than their predecessors, come almost exclusively from soccer backgrounds, are aided by an increased emphasis on special teams and rule changes, and even by playing some of their games indoors. It all adds up to greater accuracy. Coaches are starting to let more opportunities happen, which will increase the percentage, Walsh said. I just think guys are really starting to perfect what they do, and youre seeing a lot more great kickers today than you probably did in the past. Youd have a handful of great kickers and the rest would be pretty good, but not elite, but I think theres a ton of elite kickers in the NFL right now. The success rate has risen steadily from all distances, short and long, during the Super Bowl era. In 1967, for instance, barely 51 percent of all field goal attempts were good. Now, nine in 10 are splitting the uprights, which were moved to the back of the end zone in 1974. Back then, kickers were often converted linemen who happened to have strong legs. Now, every kicker in the NFL played soccer as a kid and all employ the soccer-style kick that has improved place-kickers accuracy over the decades. Hall of Fame kicker Lou The Toe Groza made 54.9 percent of his field goal attempts, a percentage that would get him run off the roster today, not enshrined in Canton, Ohio. Kickers arent just more accurate, but with such parity in the league, theyre more important than ever. Through Week 3, 28 games were decided by one score, tied with 1988 for the most such games through the first three weeks. Last weekend, seven games were decided in the final minute of regulation or overtime, something thats happened just once before, in 1995. Five of those came down to a field goal. Among the seven game-winning field goals so far was Tuckers 27-yarder as time expired that gave the Ravens the victory over the New England Patriots last weekend in a rematch of the AFC championship game. There is something wrong with this picture: Patriots, Saints, Packers and Peyton Manning all at the bottom of their divisions. And things wont get better for either New Orleans or Green Bay, who meet Sunday at Lambeau Field. But the weirdest line in the standings has to belong to New England. Not since 2003 have the Patriots been below .500. That year, they lost their opener at Buffalo 31-0, then fell only once more all season and won the Super Bowl. A couple of close defeats in which New England made some critical mistakes in the final minutes dropped the Patriots behind the Bills and Jets in the AFC East. Thats hardly what fans have come to expect from New England. We dont talk about records, said coach Bill Belichick, who was fined $50,000 for making contact with a replacement official after the 31-30 loss to Baltimore. There are so many things that can happen at the end of the game, so many different situations. Those strategic situations have to be played a certain way, whatever your strategy happens to be. But theres an element of strategy there thats unique to this game and thats what makes it great. Do we have to adjust? Yeah, sure. The Bills looked awful in their opener at the Jets, then won their last two. They lost the leagues leading rusher, C.J. Spiller, to a left shoulder injury against Cleveland, but hope to have incumbent starter Fred Jackson back from a sprained right knee. They dont want to hear anything about being tied atop the AFC East. In our eyes the Patriots are still the top dog in this division, said Mario Williams, the $100 million free agent defensive end Buffalo signed in the offseason. There is no pressure because we are already in everybody elses eyes not the leader of this division. It is the Patriots. If anybody should feel pressure it is them. Them and, even more so, the regular officials who return after the lockout ended with them reaching a new contract with the NFL. Their performances will be firmly in the spotlight this weekend. Everything is fine until there is a call that decides a game and then people players, fans, reporters are going to be complaining again, Lions receiver Nate Burleson said. If you thought there was a microscope on the replacement refs, just wait until people start expecting the regular refs to be perfect.

For us, despite whats happened this offseason and the circumstances that weve been put under, all we can worry about is the guys that we do have in the locker room, as coaches and players, the scheme that were running, trusting in, trusting in our preparation, and then going out there and finding a way to go win games, Brees said. Green Bay found the most painful and mystifying way to lose last Monday night at Seattle, on what was the final decision by the replacement officials. Coach Mike McCarthy doesnt want his players looking back at the TD awarded to Seahawks receiver Golden Tate even though Packers safety M.D. Jennings seemed to have the ball. Our experience the last couple of days has been different, unique, McCarthy said. You cant deny that or throw it off to the side. I think it would be foolish. As far as my comments and my direction with the team, its the same as it always is. They have outscored opponents 45-6 in second quarters and the defense has not allowed a touchdown in the first half. Houston also leads the NFL in average possession time (36 minutes, 34 seconds); Tennessee ranks last (23 minutes, 18 seconds).

Bryce Harper also connected for the Nationals, who reduced their magic number to three. They have a four-game lead over Atlanta with six to play. Gonzalez (21-8) settled down after a shaky start and lasted six innings, allowing three runs and six hits. Hes the first NL lefty to win more than 20 games since Dontrelle Willis won 22 for the Florida Marlins in 2005. The Phillies closed out their home schedule with a loss that left them on the brink of postseason elimination. They trail St. Louis by six games for the second wild-card spot with six games remaining. They finished 40-41 at home, their first losing record at 9-year-old Citizens Bank Park. Tyler Cloyd (2-2) allowed six runs and six hits in five-plus innings. BravES 6, marLINS 2 ATLANTA (AP) David Ross and Andrelton Simmons raced home on left fielder Bryan Petersens costly error, sending Tommy Hanson and Atlanta to a victory over Miami. Hanson (13-9) allowed two runs, one earned, and six hits in 5 1-3 innings for his first win since July 30, also against Miami. The right-hander was 0-4 with a 5.06 ERA in his previous seven starts. Miami led 2-0 before the Braves scored four runs in the fourth. Dan Uggla and Simmons had run-scoring doubles before Jacob Turner (1-4) walked Jose Constanza to load the bases. Petersen dropped Martin Prados sinking liner, allowing Ross and Simmons to score. The Braves, who have clinched at least a wildcard berth, have won five in a row. They swept the three-game series to finish 14-4 against the Marlins this season. Uggla finished with three RBIs. Miami has lost seven straight for its longest slide of a disappointing year. rOCKIES 7, CUBS 5 DENVER (AP) Jordan Pacheco and DJ LeMahieu homered, leading Colorado over Chicago for a three-game sweep. Pacheco, Wilin Rosario and Chris Nelson had two hits apiece for the Rockies, who had 12 hits in their final home game of 2012. Rafael Betancourt relieved in the ninth after a run was in and there were two on with none out. He gave up an RBI double to Alfonso Soriano before finishing for his 31st save. Chris Volstad (3-11) allowed seven runs and 10 hits in three innings. Jhoulys Chacin (3-5) got his first win since Sept. 1. He allowed three runs on seven hits and four walks in five innings.
BOARDMAN, Ohio (AP) The San Francisco 49ers have multiple reasons to get fired up to play in New York this week. Bouncing back from a loss in Minnesota in which some players felt they didnt show enough energy is one. Defensive coordinator Vic Fangio on Thursday added several more: The Jets ability to generate offense from multiple sources. They play a lot of different personnel, Fangio said before the 49ers practiced on the rain-soaked field at Youngstown State University. Theyve got a one-wide receiver offense. Theyve got a two-wide receiver offense. Theyve got a three-wide receiver offense. Theyll play a lineman at tight end. Theyll give you some unbalanced line. Theyll give you the (Tim) Tebow package, which you have to prepare for, so theyre very multiple. Having linebacker Patrick Willis healthy will help. Willis, hurt in the 24-13 loss to Minnesota on Sunday, said his right ankle feels good. Willis praised the Jets good receivers and big linemen, and is confident the 49ers are ready after ironing out a few problems that popped up in Minnesota. We know where we made our mistakes, he said. Fangio took blame for not putting more pressure on the Vikings. We didnt execute as well as were capable of executing and I could have had us in some better calls in certain situations, he said. We just didnt have our best day rushing the passer. It was a little bit of everything. The Jets feature a little bit of everything with a large portion of speedy wide receiver Santonio Holmes. Hes very explosive, hes fast, hes quick, Fangio said. Hes very dangerous after the catch. Once he gets the ball in his hands, hes like a punt returner. If the 49ers do contain quarterback Mark Sanchez and the passing game, the Jets may turn to Tebow a little more in a wildcat formation. Willis said defenders have been watching film of Tebow running it a year ago in Denver. Fangio said the 49ers worked against it a bit in training camp and have done more work this week. When you really have to go against it, youve got to change the way you play things and alter your play to compensate, Fangio said. You have to take it very serious. Meanwhile, offensive coordinator Greg Roman is losing sleep trying to analyze Jets coach Rex Ryans complex defense. He apologized for being unshaven after the staff stayed up into the wee hours of the morning. Roman expects Ryan to concoct new schemes to counter the loss of star cornerback Darrelle Revis to a season-ending knee injury. Im sure they are going to adjust somehow, Roman said. Theres a lot of different ways they can do it and we might see all of them. We have to be ready for anything.
49ers wary of Jets multifaceted offense
CANTON, Ohio (AP) John Lynch, Michael Strahan, Steve McNair and Morten Andersen are among 13 first-year eligible players for the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Safety Lynch, defensive end Strahan, quarterback McNair and kicker Andersen join offensive linemen Jonathan Ogden and Larry Allen, defensive tackle Warren Sapp and 121 other total nominees for induction. The list will be whittled to 25 semifinalists in late November. Fifteen finalists from the modern era will be announced in early January, with elections taking place Feb. 2, 2013, the day before the Super Bowl. Between four and seven new members will be selected, with inductions next August. Other first-time nominees are running back Priest Holmes, wide receiver Keenan McCardell, center Tom Nalen, DTs Sam Adams and Ted Washington and DE Bryant Young. Among the contributors nominated are former NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue and longtime team owners Bud Adams of the Titans and Robert Kraft of the Patriots. Former Browns and Ravens owner Art Modell, who died this month, also is a nominee. ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) Some things just cant be sped up. Building a rhythm and rapport with receivers is one of them, as the Denver Broncos are discovering. Never had so many of Peyton Mannings passes missed their mark as they did last weekend, when the star quarterback completed just half of his 52 throws in a 31-25 loss to Houston. Take away his three spikes and that leaves 23 times that Mannings throws ended up somewhere other than in the hands of the man he targeted and that doesnt count the toss that went off Eric Deckers hands in the end zone only to flop into the waiting arms of tight end Joel Dreessen for the touchdown. Demaryius Thomas is the Broncos best receiver, but he caught just three of 11 passes thrown his way Sunday. We are new to each other but every week I feel like its getting better, Thomas said. Its just the little things now. We get the little things down itll be a big difference. Manning also targeted tight end Jacob Tamme whom he played with in Indianapolis 10 times and only three were completed. Heres the funny thing about timing: it takes time. Thats a pretty good assessment, wide receivers coach Tyke Tolbert said. You know, being with a new quarterback working with new receivers, like the old saying, Rome wasnt built overnight, its going to take time for things to get to the point where you want them. Manning was notorious for spending extra time on the practice field working on routes and building chemistry with receivers Reggie Wayne and Marvin Harrison in Indianapolis. Hes doing the same now with Decker and Thomas and all the others, but theres a difference between the eight to 10 years he spent with the Colts receivers and the six months hes spent in Denver. In all the years Peyton was in Indianapolis he had a lot of the same receivers for a lot of the time, especially the main two, Reggie and Marvin. We havent been together a full year yet, so everything is still a work in progress, Tolbert said. Fans dont really see the nuances of every play, only that an intended target didnt come down with the ball. But sometimes the disruption in timing has nothing to do with his receivers but Mannings pocket of protection. Everybodys involved, Tamme said. Maybe the average fan doesnt understand that the receivers are involved in the run game and the O-line is involved in whether a route ends up looking good or not. So, if the quarterback has to shift a little bit or move up, step up, everythings interrelated in a play, and thats whats fun about the game. Thats whats cool about football. The difference between an 8-yard run and a 50-yard run is usually a wide receiver blocking. But people dont think about that. And the difference between a 50-yard pass and a pass getting knocked down may be up front, just a portion of the pocket changing. So, thats little stuff thats fun about the game, and stuff weve got to take a lot of pride in on both ends. Pressured up the middle, Manning has been sacked eight times already his highest total after three games in his career. That puts him on pace for a career-high 43 sacks. He never was sacked more than 29 times in Indianapolis, and that total came way back in 2001. He was sacked an average of just 18 times a season during his 13 years in Indy before sitting out last season with a nerve problem in his neck that weakened his throwing arm and required four operations. The Broncos see nothing wrong in Mannings game. His arm strength is fine, his decision-making as sharp as ever. Its just that he and the football are ending up on the ground way too often. And its everybodys responsibility to get that corrected, offensive coordinator Mike McCoy said Thursday. Every play in football is an 11-man job. Weve got to make sure that all 11 guys are on the same page, he said. You may see a receiver doing something but all of a sudden the ball cant get there because the protection broke down. Every play, whether its a run play or a pass play, its all 11 together. We hold each other accountable and weve got to do our jobs better. Help is on the way in the form of right guard Chris Kuper, the Broncos best offensive lineman, who broke his left forearm last month and returned to practice this week, although he might not be ready to play Sunday against the Oakland Raiders (1-2). If Manning keeps getting knocked down, the Broncos (1-2) have recently signed center Dan Koppen, who spent nine years protecting Tom Brady in New England, as a possible replacement for center J.D. Walton, among other potential shake-ups across the offensive line. The Broncos have fallen behind by 20 points in each of their last two losses, to Atlanta and Houston, then outscored both of them 14-0 in the fourth quarter to make a game of it. Thats led to speculation that the slow starts and fast finishes are the result of Manning needing time to really get his arm loosened up. I cant really say I know the answer to that. Im still learning some things about myself, about our team, Manning said. I think thats kind of what Ive said all along: its part of the process, as you are learning some things. Itd be nice to win while youre learning, and we havent won these last two. We have made more plays in the fourth quarter, for whatever reason, so theres certainly not a fatigue factor going on. Our challenge is getting out of the box a little bit earlier. And completing more passes. As far as finding a rhythm, itll come. It is a process, Tamme said, but its also time to start winning some football games.

The Eagles know how dynamic New Yorks defense can be the Giants have forced at least one turnover in 34 of the last 36 games so protecting the ball is a must in the primetime matchup. New Yorks depth has been tested by injuries, and the Giants got passing marks in a win over Carolina. JETS (2-1) An annoyed bunch of 49ers head to the Meadowlands after spending most of the week in Youngstown, Ohio, following a loss at Minnesota. The strategy worked a year ago when they swept consecutive road games, and now they face a Jets team missing its best player, All-Pro cornerback Darrelle Revis. He wrecked his left knee against Miami. The Jets offense has stagnated the last two weeks, not the approach anyone wants to take against San Franciscos fierce defense. SaN dIEGO (2-1) aT KaNSaS CITy (1-2) Kansas Citys Jamaal Charles comes off what most running backs would consider a career game, but it was only his second-best rushing performance in the pros. He ran for 233 yards, including a 91-yard TD, in a win at New Orleans, still short of his 259 yards he gained in the last game of the 2009 season. Another 230yard game would tie him with Jim Brown as the only players to manage the feat. San Diego completely flopped at home against Atlanta last week after a 2-0 start. The Chargers last visit to Arrowhead ended ugly as Philip Rivers fumbled a snap while trying to take a knee with 1:03 left in regulation. The Chiefs won in overtime.
SEaTTLE (2-1) aT ST. LOUIS (1-2) Few coaches are raging optimists the way Seattles Pete Carroll is, but even he couldnt have envisioned the scenario that played out Monday night against Green Bay. Our fans had the moment of their life and I know its crushing on the other end of it, Carroll said. The point now is to understand that we have to find the discipline it takes to be turned into the next preparation. If they can find the same pass rush that sacked Aaron Rodgers eight times, the Seahawks could be in great shape because St. Louis has a jumbled offensive line. CHICaGO (2-1) aT daLLaS (2-1), mONday NIGHT. Key to this game also will be the performance of the offensive lines. Can they protect their quarterbacks Chicagos Jay Cutler gets rattled under heavy pressure, and Dallas Tony Romo is prone to mistakes in similar situations. The Bears lead the NFL with 14 sacks, getting six last week against St. Louis. They also have nine takeaways. Dallas is minus-3 in turnover margin. mINNESOTa (2-1) aT dETrOIT (1-2) Smiles in Minneapolis, frowns in Motor City. While the Vikings are off to a stunningly strong start they barely missed sweeping their first three games the Lions have been disappointing. Detroit gave up long scoring plays all day in Tennessee, then couldnt convert a fourth-and-1 in overtime on a play when the ball was not supposed to be snapped. Minnesota has lost 11 straight in the NFC North, three of those to the Lions. CINCINNaTI (2-1) aT JaCKSONvILLE (1-2) Jacksonville stole one in Indianapolis on an 80-yard catch-and-run score by Cecil Shorts III with 45 seconds to go. The Jags expect to get three starting linemen back from injuries. A.J. Green, coming off a career-high 183 yards receiving last week at Washington, had five catches for 90 yards and a 37-yard TD reception in a win against the Jaguars last year. WaSHINGTON (1-2) aT Tampa Bay (1-2) Both teams won their openers and dropped close games after that. Redskins QB Robert Griffin III leads NFL rookies with a 103.5 passer rating and leads all quarterbacks in yards rushing (209, 6.5-yard average) and his three touchdowns rushing are tied for most among all players. Tampa has the No. 1 rushing defense, yielding 47.3 yards per game, but that is totally misleading: The Bucs have allowed a leaguehigh 353.3 yards per game passing.
The 15-yard markoff set up a 51-yard field goal by Phil Dawson that got the Browns within 16-10. Late in the quarter, Williams ambushed an out pattern by Travis Benjamin and took the interception down the right sideline for a 13-point lead. It was the 13th consecutive home win for the Ravens, the longest current run in the NFL, and their streak of 10 straight wins in the division is also the most of any team. Anquan Boldin caught nine passes for 131 yards, and Torrey Smith had six catches for 97 yards and a score. Weeden went 25 for 52 for 320 yards, and rookie running back Trent Richardson gained only 47 yards rushing on 14 carries. Dawson kicked field goals of 51, 50 and 52 yards, the last one with 4:33 left made it 23-16. Its the third time since 1998 that the Browns have lost their first four games. They finished 2-14 in 1999 and 5-11 in 2009. Cleveland played the majority of the game without wide receiver and punt returner Joshua Cribbs, who sustained a head injury while returning a kick late in the first quarter. Cribbs had his helmet knocked off and lost the handle on the ball after absorbing a hard hit by Dannell Ellerbe. It was legal tackle, shoulder to helmet, and the officials did not call a penalty. Cribbs lay prone for several minutes before finally rising to his feet and walking off the field. Flacco went 16 for 26 for 186 yards and a touchdown to stake the Ravens to 9-7 halftime lead. After Cribbs first-quarter fumble, the Ravens moved to the Cleveland 10 before Browns linebacker Craig Robertson picked off a pass by Flacco in the end zone. It was the first time in 126 attempts that Flacco threw an interception inside the opponents 20-yard line. Flacco made amends on Baltimores next series, going 4 for 4 and throwing an 18-yard touchdown pass to Smith for a 6-0 lead. Flacco went 4 for 4 on the 85-yard drive, hitting Tandon Doss for 39 yards on a third-and-7 and also connecting with Smith on a 34-yarder. After a Cleveland punt, rookie Justin Tucker kicked a 45-yard field goal to make it 9-0. Weeden then directed a brilliant 11-play, 94-yard march, connecting with Greg Little on a 43-yard completion before Richardson ran in from the 1. On the opening drive of the third quarter, Flacco took the Ravens 89 yards in 13 plays for a 16-7 lead. Flacco completed five passes during the march, including three to Boldin for 60 yards, before the quarterback ran in from the 1 on a third-and-goal. Later in the quarter, Tucker missed the first field goal try of his career, a 47-yarder that sailed wide right.
Kickers off to best ever
missed a 32-yard field goal in the closing seconds. In the encore, Tucker who took the job away from Cundiff in training camp drove his kick just inside the right upright. Bottom line is it went in, Tucker said. Thats all I care about. It went in. Patriots coach Bill Belichick wasnt so sure and he was fined $50,000 this week for grabbing a replacement officials arm after the game as he tried to see if the call was reviewable. It wasnt. Tucker, who beat out Cundiff with a perfect preseason, attributes his success to lessons he received from head coach John Harbaugh, special teams coach Jerry Rosburg and kicking consultant Randy Brown. I feel like Im kicking the best I ever kicked, Tucker said. Took a little work, took a couple of days, and now I feel like Im striking the ball as confidently as I ever have. Hes not the only one who feels that way. Praters three field goals against Houston last week moved him past Jason Elam as the most accurate kicker in team history at 81 percent, and his 53-yarder made him 13 for 17 from 50 yards and out for a 76.5 percent clip, the best in league history with a minimum of 10 attempts. Ryan Succops club-record sixth field goal gave Kansas City a 27-24 win in overtime at New Orleans last weekend. He was a perfect 6 for 6 on kicks ranging from 25 to 45 yards. Zuerlein, a sixth-round pick out of tiny Missouri Western, is 8 for 8 on field goals, including a 56-yarder last week, one yard shy of the Rams franchise record. What impresses his coaches is his steely resolve that belies his inexperience. I guess Im just confident in my abilities, Zuerlein said. I expect to make the kick, so I dont get nervous really. Rams special teams coach John Fassel said hes never worked with a kicker this talented so early in his career: You see him in the mall, he looks like any other 24-year-old walking around, Fassel said. But his leg speed is incredible. Zuerlein said years spent playing soccer probably account for his explosive leg power, not anything he does in the weight room. I cant squat a house or anything like that, Zuerlein said. Its probably about the same amount of weight just an average person might lift. So far this season, theres been nothing ordinary about NFL kickers.

SEATTLE (AP) All night, Steve Sarkisian felt if he could just get the ball past the first, stout wave of Stanfords defense, the opportunity was there for Washington to make big plays. It happened only twice and thanks to a stunning defensive effort by the Huskies, it was enough Washington to pull out the upset of the eighth-ranked Cardinal. The way we executed in the most critical moments, thats what Im most proud of those guys for, Sarkisian said. Kasen Williams took a quick screen pass from Keith Price, broke a tackle and the line of scrimmage and raced 35 yards for the go-ahead score with 4:53 left, and Washington rallied from 10 points down to stun No. 8 Stanford 17-13 on Thursday night. Trailing 13-3 late in the third quarter, the Huskies (3-1, 1-0 Pac-12) got a 61-yard touchdown sprint from running back Bishop Sankey on fourth-and-1 for their first offensive touchdown against an FBS opponent since the first quarter of the opener against San Diego State. Then Washington put together a nine-play drive that included another fourth-down conversion and was capped by Williams catch-and-run that gave the Huskies their first lead. It was Washingtons first win over a top 10 ranked opponent since its upset of then-No. 3 USC back in 2009, Steve Sarkisians first season at Washington. And it was thanks to an inspired defensive effort that was the opposite of a year ago when Stanford (3-1, 1-1) bulldozed the Huskies to the tune of 446 yards rushing and 65 points. If nothing else, new defensive coordinator Justin Wilcox earned his lofty salary with a unique scheme that stymied Stanfords power attack. Against Stanford we know what they were going to do, we knew they were going to try and power the ball down on our throat like they did the last four years and its worked, Washington safety Justin Glenn said. But coach Wilcox just told us focus on each play. If something happens, erase it and focus on the next play. We kept battling down after down. Washingtons student section poured on to the turf of CenturyLink Field after Price took a knee for the final time. It was a crucial win for the Huskies in the first game of a schedule that only gets tougher next week at No. 2 Oregon before returning home to host No. 13 USC. Price finished 19 of 37 for 177 yards and the touchdown toss to Williams. Sankey had 144 yards on 20 carries after Stanfords defense had allowed just 124 yards rushing combined in the first three games of the season. But for all the offensive fireworks the Huskies playmakers showed at key times, this victory rested with the Washington defense.
No. 8 Stanford falls to the Huskies 17-13

Given extra time to prepare for the Cardinal with a bye last weekend, Wilcox used every minute of it to devise a defensive scheme to slow Stanfords rushing attack. Most notably, Wilcox regularly had eight or nine defenders near the line of scrimmage, daring Stanford quarterback Josh Nunes to beat them through the air. Stanford went more than 21 minutes of the first half without gaining a first down and Nunes couldnt lead a winning drive in the closing seconds. Stanford finished with just 235 yards of total offense, the fewest yards allowed by Washington since the 2010 Holiday Bowl against Nebraska. The Cardinal were held without an offensive touchdown for the first time since Oct. 27, 2007 at Oregon State, a 23-6 Stanford loss. Stanford finished 5 of 18 on third downs and had only one drive of longer than 50 yards. Nunes, the replacement for Andrew Luck, finished 18 of 37 for 170 yards. But the most important factor was Washingtons ability to control Stanford running back Stepfan Taylor. Last year, Taylor ran for 138 yards against Washington and had 153 yards rushing in the upset of then-No. 2 USC on Sept. 15. He finished with 75 yards on 21 carries, none of them longer than 7 yards. SEATTLE (AP) Pac-12 Commissioner Larry Scott confirmed Thursday night the conference is in preliminary talks with the Big 12 Conference about creating a seventh bowl game that would match a representative from one of the two conferences against the best team from a group of five conferences, including the Big East. Scott spoke at halftime of Washingtons game against No. 8 Stanford. He said the talks that with the Big 12 are in the infant stages and started after all the conference commissioners met last week in Chicago. There is an ongoing concern some of the conference have had about AQ, non-AQ, access and those types of issues and in that conversation there was a consensus that we could all imagine a seventh bowl game so there is more access points going forward for all conferences than existed in the past, Scott said. In my view, given that there is so much positive about the new system going forward about having a playoff and neutral site championship game it would be a real shame if all that progress and all that success is clouded by continued discussions about access and have and have-nots. I hope with all the progress were making, Im certainly in favor of creating more access points and making that conversation something of the past. A person with direct knowledge of the plan for the fourteam playoff in 2014 told The Associated Press on Wednesday that either a Pac-12 or a Big 12 team likely will be the opponent for the top-rated champion from the Big East, Mountain West, Conference USA, Sun Belt and Mid-American Conference. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the conferences did not want to make the plan public. The proposal has the Pac-12 sending either its champion or a replacement team to the game in years when the Rose Bowl hosts a national semifinal. In years the Rose Bowl is a traditional Big Ten-Pac-12 matchup, the Big 12 would send one of its top teams to the game. The deal with the Big 12 and Pac-12 would be similar to the one the Orange Bowl is working on with the Big Ten and the Southeastern Conference. That deal, which has not been completed, would match a team from either of those conferences or Notre Dame against the Atlantic Coast Conference champ or a another ACC team. There is discussion going on around the seventh bowl, the Big 12 and I have had about the possibility but weve also discussed other possibilities as well, Scott said. The reports I saw made it seem a little bit further along and a little more concrete than I would describe it as. It was a fresh conversation coming out of Chicago last week. I wouldnt describe it as far along as I read but Im happy to confirm that it is a conversation that its being had. The original playoff plan had the national semifinals rotating among six bowl sites, giving the new system two playoff games and four other high-revenue bowl games each season. The top four teams determined by a selection committee, regardless of conference affiliation, will play in the semifinals. The winners meet in a championship game about a week later. The spots in those other four games would be for other highly ranked teams, but those slots have quickly started filling up as the major conferences began making deals. The Rose Bowl, as has been tradition, will always match the Pac-12 and Big Ten when it does not host a semifinal. The new marquee bowl being created by the Big 12 and the SEC site to be determined will be also part of the system, so those two spots are filled. The Orange Bowls deals took two more spots out of play. That led to concerns about limited access to the high-revenue games for the other five conferences. The rebuilding Big East, which currently has automaticqualifying status to the Bowl Championship Series, has been trying to gain a more secure spot in the new postseason system. The person with direct knowledge of the plan said new Big East Commissioner Mike Aresco spearheaded the push for the addition of a seventh game to be added to the system, and presented a plan for the highest-rated champion from the other five conferences to be assured a spot in the game. Sun Belt Commissioner Karl Benson told the AP last week there was enough support for a seventh game among the commissioners to make it happen. Allowing the Pac-12 and Big 12 to share the spot opposite the best of the rest in a bowl would give the game stability and likely increase the value of its television rights, as compared to having the opponent be left undetermined.

Detroits Cabrera chasing Triple Crown

DETROIT (AP) Miguel Cabreras drive sailed high into the Detroit night so high, in fact, that left fielder Alex Gordon had time to drift over to the fence and wait a couple seconds before reaching over and robbing the slugger of a home run. That snapshot was a good example of why nobody has won baseballs Triple Crown in 45 years. It takes a special blend of power, discipline, consistency and yes, luck, if you believe in such a thing. But Cabrera is making perhaps the strongest bid since Carl Yastrzemski accomplished the feat in 1967. With six games remaining, Detroits 29-year-old third baseman tops the American League in batting average and RBIs and trails home run leader Josh Hamilton by only one. I heard a lot from the fans about the Triple Crown. I cant repeat most of it, but Im sure you can guess, said Gordon, the Kansas City outfielder who did his part to slow Cabreras pursuit by taking that homer away Wednesday night. Miguel puts up these numbers every year, so it isnt a surprise that hes got a chance at the Triple Crown. I think that, some year, hell probably do it. Hes just an incredible hitter, and hes respected by everyone in the game. Cabrera won his first batting title last year, hitting .344 to complete a career triple crown after winning home run and RBI titles in previous seasons. Now hes trying to become the first player since Yastrzemski to sweep all three categories at the same time. Since 1967, the Triple Crown has been even more elusive in baseball than in horse racing. Yastrzemski figures its only a matter of time before somebody new joins the club. Since his Triple Crown season, other seemingly unapproachable marks have been surpassed. When Rose broke Cobbs hit record, I never thought that would happen, Yastrzemski said. When Ripken broke Gehrigs consecutive game record, I never thought that would happen either. So its going to happen. In 1967, Yastrzemski hit .326 with 44 homers and 121 RBIs a feat somewhat overshadowed at the time by a memorable pennant race in which his Boston Red Sox outlasted Detroit and Minnesota by a single game. Cabrera is in a similar spot. The Tigers are in a tense race with the Chicago White Sox atop the AL Central. After Thursdays 5-4 victory over Kansas City, Cabrera is hitting .326 with 42 homers and 133 RBIs. I want to keep my game the same way, Cabrera said recently. I dont want to put extra pressure because weve got a lot of pressure right now in our division. I think its going to be a big mistake if I put extra pressure on myself. Ted Williams and Rogers Hornsby both won the Triple Crown twice. Frank Robinson did it the year before Yastrzemski, making the drought that followed even more striking. According to STATS LLC., since Yastrzemskis Triple Crown, a player has finished atop his league in two of the three categories 45 times. That makes some sense, since a good power hitter can rack up homers and RBIs simultaneously. Sure enough, in 41 of those 45 Triple Crown near-misses, batting average was the spoiler. Stars like Johnny Bench, Mike Schmidt, Barry Bonds and Alex Rodriguez have all led their leagues in homers and RBIs in the same season only to fall short of the batting title. Thats whats made Cabrera unique. Some power hitters strike out so much they can forget about a decent batting average. Cabrera is on pace to hit at least .320 for the seventh time in eight years but there may be a limit to how high his average can rise since he doesnt have much speed. That makes his Triple Crown attempt that much more remarkable. Its really a difficult thing to do, particularly for a guy like Cabrera, Tigers manager Jim Leyland said. Cabrera doesnt get any infield hits, so thats a tough thing to do. Jeff Bagwell was the only recent player to finish in the top two in each Triple Crown category; in the strike-shortened 1994 season, he was first in RBIs and second in both average and homers. In 1992, Gary Sheffield led the National League in hitting but finished two behind in the home run race and nine back in RBIs. Thats the ultimate, to win the Triple Crown, slugger Jim Thome said. I think it would be good for baseball. I think it would be good for kids of our era to say that they watched a Triple Crown. If youre a kid in Detroit, how could you not want to see a Triple Crown? Cabreras chase has helped start a debate over whether he or Angels rookie Mike Trout should be the American League MVP. Trout has been an all-around force for Los Angeles at the plate, in the field and on the bases. No matter who comes out on top in that vote, theres no detracting from Cabreras terrific year. He was arrested at the start of spring training in 2011 and later pleaded no contest to drunken driving, but he earned praise from the organization for his work off the field in the aftermath of that ugly incident. He went on to win the batting title last year and helped the Tigers to a division championship. When Detroit signed Prince Fielder in the offseason, Cabrera moved from first base to third and showed up at spring training looking a little slimmer. His home run and RBI totals in 2012 are both career highs, and while he doesnt remind anyone of Brooks Robinson with the glove, hes hardly the only Tiger with defensive issues. Hes also Detroits nominee this year for the Roberto Clemente Award, which rewards the player who best represents the game of baseball through positive contributions on and off the field, including sportsmanship and community involvement. In July, Cabrera became the second Venezuela-born player to reach 300 homers. Hes the total package, Royals manager Ned Yost said. Theres just none of them around that can do what he can do hit for an extremely high average, hit for an extreme amount of power and be a run producer. Cabrera has taken advantage of a big year from Detroit leadoff hitter Austin Jackson, who is hitting .303. Having a player like that ahead of him in the lineup has surely helped Cabreras RBI total. Any number of hitters could still play spoiler to Cabreras Triple Crown chase. Joe Mauer is three points behind in average. Hamilton is ahead in homers, and Edwin Encarnacion is even with Cabrera at 42. Adam Dunn has 41. So the stage is set for quite a conclusion to the regular season, both because of the AL Central race and Cabreras own shot at history. Its hard. A lot of attention right now. Here, even in Venezuela, Cabrera said. Try to stay out, dont read the papers. Try not to think about it.

California law will help injured student athletes

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) California will become the first state to mandate financial protections for student athletes who suffer career-ending injuries in some of the states top college sports programs under a bill Gov. Jerry Brown announced signing Thursday. SB1525 protects athletes at the four universities that receive more than $10 million annually in sports media revenue the University of Southern California, UCLA, Berkeley and Stanford. They will have to give academic scholarships to students who lose their athletic scholarships if they are injured while playing their sport. They also will have to cover insurance deductibles and pay health care premiums for lowincome athletes, among other provisions. The legislation requires the universities to pay future medical costs for on-the-field injuries, providing student-athletes with the kind of guarantees that even some professional athletes dont receive. Neither personal injury nor poverty should dim the dreams of a student-athlete pursuing a college degree, particularly when their performance has enriched their college, Sen. Alex Padilla, D-Los Angeles, said in a statement. Padilla cited a 16-year study by the NCAA and the Journal of Athletic Training showing that each year thousands of students are hurt while training or playing sports, with many of the injuries ending their chance to continue participating. Of the four schools immediately affected, only Stanford objected to the final version of the bill, saying it is unfair to include only the top money-generating universities. Padilla said his bill eventually could affect San Diego State University because it recently switched to a different conference with more lucrative television rights. David Roberts, USCs vice president of athletic compliance, said in a statement that his school was among those that dropped its initial objections after lawmakers narrowed the scope of the bill. He said his university shares concerns that the law will exclude most California students. The legislation would take effect at the start of the 20132014 school year and wouldnt apply to this years departing seniors. The issue came to Padillas attention early this year when the National College Players Association sent a petition to the NCAA signed by hundreds of football and basketball players from schools including UCLA in Padillas district. Lawmakers in a number of other states planned similar legislation, but California is the first to enact the requirements. This legislation is the first of its kind in the nation and promises student-athletes important protections that should have been in place long ago, Ramogi Huma, president of the National College Players Association, said in a statement. The legislation was one of several higher education bills the governor announced signing. Another, AB970, would require the University of California and California State University systems to provide public notice and consult with students before raising tuition. The fee notice bill also signed by Brown comes after protests from student activists that their education costs were abruptly increased to help universities survive state budget cuts as California battled a lingering deficit. It requires universities to provide weeks of public notice before considering fee hikes, provide written justification for the proposed increases, detail the effect on students, and outline any possible alternatives. It also limits when the university systems can raise fees each year. Brown signed the bills during a meeting with more than a dozen college students in his Capitol office, according to a video tape released by the administration.

Man pleads guilty to extorting Redskins QB
DALLAS (AP) A former Baylor basketball player pleaded guilty Thursday to trying to extort $1 million from Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III by threatening to expose damaging information, prosecutors said. Richard Khamir Hurd, 26, pleaded guilty to one count of interstate communication of a threat related to extortion. He faces two to three years in prison when hes sentenced Nov. 21. The U.S. attorneys office said Hurd, a former walk-on basketball player at the school where Griffin won the Heisman Trophy, contacted one of Griffins agents in June with a demand of $1 million in order not to release information that would damage the quarterbacks reputation. According to an FBI affidavit, Hurd first gave the agent a deadline of June 18 but extended it to give the agent time to discuss the offer with others. Griffins agent contacted authorities. Under the FBIs direction, the agent reached an agreement to pay Hurd $120,000 for the information and his signature on a non-disclosure agreement. Hurd arrived June 22 at a law office to sign the paperwork and collect the check. FBI agents arrested him afterward. Hurds attorney didnt immediately return a phone message. Leaving court Thursday, Hurd responded to a request for comment with, Sic em, Bears, the Waco Tribune-Herald reported. Griffin was drafted No. 2 by the Redskins this year and signed a four-year deal for more than $21 million. He has thrown for 747 yards and four touchdowns in three games. The Redskins are 1-2. A team spokesman declined to comment.
EUGENE, Ore. (AP) Oregon defensive coordinator Nick Aliotti gets emotional when talking about his kids. The longtime Oregon assistant has surely become accustomed in recent years to all the attention falling on the Ducks speedy spread offense. So when the spotlight falls on Oregons defense, Aliottis pride is apparent. Anythings possible with these kids, he said with an ear-to-ear grin. They listen. They practice hard. They want to win. The defense starred last weekend when No. 2 Oregon shut out Arizona 49-0. Six times the Ducks prevented the Wildcats from scoring from the red zone. Interceptions by sophomores Ifo Ekpre-Olomu and Troy Hill were returned for touchdowns, and overall the Ducks had four interceptions returned for 99 yards. Linebacker Michael Clay had 13 tackles, including two for loss, to earn Pac-12 player of the week honors. The shutout was the first in conference play for Oregon since a 35-0 win over Stanford in 2003, although last season the defense held when Colorado only came away with a safety on an Oregon punt return in a 45-2 Ducks victory. Oregon Ducks defense readies for the Air Raid

The Cougars have adapted new coach Mike Leachs Air Raid attack, passing for an average of 313.75 yards this season (18th nationally) while running for just 59 yards per game (second-to-last nationally). We dont recruit when players are on their missions. We wont recruit when theyre on their missions. And when players want to transfer, the first thing that is usually signaled is foul play. But we wont, didnt and havent violated any rules, nor will we in the future. Its just unfortunate that anyone might think that we did. Despite the controversy, Mendenhall doesnt expect it will affect his relationship with Chow. Everyone makes mistakes and Ill greet him before the game just like I would anybody, Mendenhall said. Chow, meanwhile, has preferred to look forward not back. Ive been back three times since we left Provo, he said of wins over BYU as coordinator at USC (in 2004) and Utah (2011) and a 59-0 loss as a UCLA assistant in 2008. Im not the greatest offensive mind of all time, Doman said with a laugh. Id love for somebody to say that when Im his age, but right now Im a long ways away. Facing Chows defense could be the tonic Doman and BYUs struggling offense need. While BYU ranks 91st nationally in total offense, Hawaii is 116th in scoring defense, allowing 40 points a game. Its a highrisk, high-reward defense, Doman said, so theyll take a lot of risk and hopefully we dont give them any rewards. Conversely, the Cougars seventh-ranked defense can be gamechanging even if it lost senior defensive end Eathyn Manumaleuna to a torn patellar tendon in his left knee in the 7-6 loss to Boise State. At least the Cougars and their young offensive linemen wont be struggling to hear the calls now that the team is home again. Were not panicking, BYU wide receiver JD Falslev said. We know what were capable of. Were just not performing. If it doesnt happen against Hawaii, it may not happen. Next up for the Cougars are games against the rejuvenated Utah State Aggies (who beat Utah), No. 18 Oregon State and No. 10 Notre Dame. Chow, meanwhile, already has faced a top-ranked squad as Hawaii lost its opener, 49-10, to another former team, then-No. 1 USC. He can only hope the result this time is different. HaWaII COUrT dENIES rEqUEST TO rEvISIT raIL prOJECT rULING HONOLULU (AP) The Hawaii Supreme Court has denied Honolulus request to reconsider a recent ruling that led to shutting down construction of the citys $5-billion rail project. The city asked the high court to revisit a unanimous ruling that the state Historic Preservation Division violated its own rules by allowing rail construction to begin before an archaeological survey was completed for the entire 20-mile route. City lawyers argued the division has authority to allow the project to continue. The Native Hawaiian Legal Corp. says the court denied the citys motion on Thursday. Paulette Kaleikini sued to stop construction in an effort to protect ancient Hawaiian remains in the path of the rail line. The Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation says in accordance with the ruling, archaeological survey work is being accelerated. SUmmEr ENdS STrONG FOr HaWaII TOUrISm ECONOmy HONOLULU (AP) Hawaiis tourism economy ended the summer with double-digit increases in visitor arrivals and spending. Thats according to the Hawaii Tourism Authoritys August statistics. The authority said Thursday spending grew 14.6 percent last month compared to the previous year to $1.19 billion. August arrivals increased 11 percent. Arrivals from the U.S. West grew almost 8 percent for the 10th consecutive month of growth. Japanese arrivals increased nearly 13 percent last month, but remained lower than the August 1996 record. There was a 4 percent drop in daily spending, which resulted in a moderate, about 6 percent increase in total spending. Canadian arrivals dropped 0.6 percent and spending decreased 1.4 percent. Authority President and CEO Mike McCartney says upcoming festivals and events will help draw visitors during the slower fall travel period. No damage or injuries were reported. The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commissions federal lawsuit alleges sexual harassment on behalf a group of female employees, including teens. The complaint says a male supervisor at the Kapaa restaurant sexually abused at least three female teens starting in 2008. The commission says that one teen who reported the harassment had her hours cut and was forced to resign and that another teen quit to avoid verbal obscenities and sexual advances. The commission is suing the Rosemead, Calif.-based giant Chinese fast-food chain. A Panda Restaurant Group spokeswoman said Thursday the company doesnt comment on pending litigation. Hawaii News Now reported Wednesday the state says its losing $700,000 to $1.5 million a year on the Dillingham Airfield, leaving skydivers wondering what will happen to the popular recreational aviation venue. The Army says the state hasnt told them whether the lease will be terminated. The states lease with the Army expires in 2014 but the Army says the state can opt out before that. The state has operated the 65-acre property since 1962. UNION FINEd FOr SUppOrT IN HaWaII CONGrESS raCE HONOLULU (AP) A complaint about the United Public Workers support of Hawaiis U.S. Rep. Colleen Hanabusa in 2010 is raising questions about how far labor unions can go in requiring political participation. The union agreed to pay a $5,500 penalty to the Federal Election Commission for not reporting more than $40,000 in spending to help Hanabusa win a special election. The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reported Thursday the complaint showed a division within the FEC on the issue. Three Republican appointees agreed with UPW attorneys that employees can be required to participate in activities such as sign-waving and telephone banking for candidates. Three Democratic appointees said there was evidence the union coerced employees. A former staff attorney for the union alleged she was fired because she wouldnt participate in activities to help Hanabusa. aCCrEdITOrS WaNT UpdaTES ON BOTCHEd HaWaII CONCErT HONOLULU (AP) The association that accredits the University of Hawaii wants information about fallout from a botched benefit concert promoted as featuring Stevie Wonder. A team from the Western Association of Schools and Colleges that visited earlier this month wants to be kept abreast of any report or legislation related to the concert, which needed to be canceled after school officials learned it wasnt approved by the artist or his representatives. The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports some have worried the blunder would threaten accreditation, but the association does not appear to believe the matter to be urgent enough to take immediate action. The team wants results of a special state Senate committee holding hearings into the canceled concert. The university lost $200,000 in what officials have described as a scam. OaHU rESIdENTS pLEad GUILTy TO GamBLING OpEraTION HONOLULU (AP) Two Oahu residents are pleading guilty to operating an illegal gambling business in Waianae. Lloyd Robert Marshall and Nitta Mitsuko Marshall are also pleading guilty to 13 counts of evading currency regulations while handling proceeds from the business. Federal prosecutors said Wednesday the Marshalls agreed to use their property as a site for illegal cockfighting contests and dice and card games between 2009 and 2011. Police observed from 100 to 600 people at these events. People attending paid parking and entrance fees. The U.S. Attorneys office says the Marshalls each face up to five years in prison for the gambling charges and 10 years in prison for each of the counts related to evading currency regulations. They are scheduled to be sentenced on Jan. 28.
