CASA replaced a vacant lot on Mission Street near Geneva Avenue with newpermanently a
ff
ordable housing for seniors with very low incomes. The buildingdesign is the result of extensive outreach to and input from neighbors in thesurrounding communityThe project created 36 a
ff
ordable studio and one-bedroom apartments for verylow-income seniors plus a two-bedroom apartment for the live-in property manager(total of 37 units). The building is three stories, with an elevator to reach most of the apartments, which are on the second and third
oors. The ground
oor includesa large community room with adjacent kitchen, laundry, u
lity rooms, o
ces forthe resident manager and services coordinator, and a small garage. A protectedcourtyard and deck provide plenty of outdoor space for seniors to enjoy some freshair or try their hand at container gardening. The building’s sponsors and architectswere sure to include ameni
es appropriate to the seniors who now occupy thebuilding – corridor handrails, grab bars at tubs and toilets, and a call system toconnect units to property management in case of emergency.BHNC developed CASA in partnership with Mission Housing DevelopmentCorpora
on, with BHNC taking the lead early on in organizing community supportand then throughout design, construc
on, and rent-up. MHDC’s developmentexperience was cri
cal in securing HUD funding for development and con
nuedopera
ons. BHNC’s Senior Services program directs a part-
me services coordinatorat CASA, who works to link tenants with outside services and to help organizeprogramming and ac
vi
es in the building.
