The WUDC Berlin 2013 Scholarship

We, the organizers of the World Universities Debating Championship Berlin 2013, are proud to announce the WUDC Berlin 2013 Scholarship. The scholarship is a comprehensive, need-based programme for speakers as well as adjudicators supported by a grant from the Open Society Foundations, aiming at the enhancement of inclusiveness at the WUDC Berlin 2013 and the promotion of debating in less developed debating communities. Goals The participation of traditionally underrepresented groups in WUDCs can have significant benefits, not only for the respective debaters and their communities but also for global debating as a whole and all participants of the WUDC Berlin 2013. It is the goal of this scholarship to further spread debate and foster diversity by facilitating the inclusion of teams and adjudicators from developing countries and less developed debating communities and to actively encourage the participation of female debaters and judges from these areas. Scholarship recipients are encouraged to take the experiences they gain at the WUDC Berlin 2013 and foster free and critical discourse in their home countries. Scope The scholarship will support the participation of 30 teams and 50 adjudicators in the WUDC Berlin 2013. Participants in the programme will be automatically allocated team slots, independent of other registration modalities. Individuals currently registered for the WUDC Berlin 2013 are not eligible for participation in the programme. The registration fee (including accommodation, transfers and meals) and visa fees will be completely covered for all programme participants. Travel costs will be covered proportionally on the basis of need and according to available funding. Upon acceptance to the programme, participants will be notified of the level of travel funding for which they are eligible. The programme includes a fully funded two-day training event before the WUDC Berlin 2013, on December 26th and 27th. Criteria Applicants will be selected on the basis of financial need, their ability to bring diversity to the WUDC Berlin 2013, their potential for personal growth and their desire to use their experience to help effect positive change in their local communities. Process Only applications received by the end of September 14th 2012 (Berlin time) will be considered. In order to apply for the WUDC Berlin 2013 Scholarship, please copy, paste and fill in the application form (HTML) and submit it along with your rsum (CV) to programme coordinator John Eltringham (j.eltringham@wudcberlin.com), who will also answer all questions you may have.
