Poker Game Strategy: The art of Tells, and How To Read Your
Opponents

The ability to read other poker players’ tells is vital to winning hands at the poker table. This just as much the case regardless of the table being virtual or real, if you’re in a tournament playing with friends. If you’re going to win against other players, you need to know how to read them and their tells.

One of the most valued skills amongst poker players is the ability to bluff, or to have a good poker face. Bluffing is a term used when a player is trying to get an opponent to believe that what they’re saying is true. This works both for good and bad hands. For a good hand it may be in your best interests to have your opponent believe that they have the better hand; they will then bet up the pot. However, a poker player with a bad hand who has mastered the art of bluffing may be able to convince their opponent to fold, therefore winning the hand with bad cards.

Bluffing works as well in online poker rooms as it does in off line play, although, online rooms have their own opportunities for poker players. A lot of the time, whilst playing online, other players are more willing to share their secrets with you. Use this to your advantage. Ask questions - usually they will tell you why they did or

didn’t make a certain play during a game. After all, they’re most likely not going to be playing against you in real
life. If you explain that you are new to the game, most online poker players won’t mind ‘teaching’ you.

Another skill that poker players need to develop is being able to pick up on their opponents’ tells whilst hiding their own. Most players are not going to be as obvious as to jump up and down for joy when they’re dealt a great hand, but perhaps look up at the ceiling or tap their toes. Being able to pick up on this body language will help you play more effectively against them. Just as important, though: never forget that whilst you are watching your opponents, they are also watching you.

Some poker players engage in chat whilst playing a hand. This can be distracting if you are not one who can do this and still concentrate. The reason for this talking is easy to understand: it is an effective way to throw off the concentration of a table. If you want to be a successful poker player you will need to learn either to block this out or, again, to use it to your own advantage.
