 2 December 31, 2008To the Multi-State Working Group on Social Networking of State Attorneys General of the United States:On behalf of the Internet Safety Technical Task Force, I am pleased to transmit to the 52Attorneys General on the Multi-State Working Group the Task Force’s Final Report onthe role and the promise of technologies to reduce the risk to minors of harmful contactand content on the Internet. Along with the quarterly reports submitted throughout theyear to the Attorneys General and the evaluation criteria included in the TechnologyAdvisory Board’s submission, this Report fulfills the Task Force’s remit to report theresults of its study no later than December 31, 2008.I would like to thank in particular Attorneys General Richard Blumenthal of Connecticutand Roy Cooper of North Carolina, and their respective staffs, for their supportthroughout this process and for their leadership – over many years – to help protectchildren from the risk of harm online. I was especially pleased to have been hosted byAttorney General Martha Coakley, who has been a key figure, along with her staff, inprotecting children online in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and nationally. Theleadership of these Attorneys General and their colleagues, on this and many relatedissues – including identity theft, spam, phishing, and cybersecurity – is an importantdriver in making the Internet a safer place for all of us.I would also like to take this opportunity to recognize the outstanding efforts of all of theTask Force members and their respective organizations. I am grateful, too, to theTechnology Advisory Board and the Research Advisory Board for their contributions tothis process. This Task Force was a collaborative effort, convened over a very shortperiod of time, on an issue of the utmost importance to our society.
