Clopton United Methodist Church

In the community of Clopton, located in thenortheastern section of Dale County, is the CloptonMethodist Episcopal Church and Cemetery. OnSeptember 28, 2000 they were listed on the AlabamaRegister of Landmarks and Heritage. Although the present church was built in 1924, it was erected on theoriginal space occupied by its predecessor, built in 1850.
 
It was a time when many pioneer families came fromthe Carolinas via Henry and Barbour counties. Somenames of the pioneer families that helped to found this150

year old congregation are Bethune, Camp, Clark,Dunn, Gaskins, Haynes, Hogan, Horne, Morris,Hudspeth, Jordan, Lingo, McDaniel, McGlaun, Roberts,Stokes, Pearce, Reynolds, Sanders, Solomon, Steagall,Tice, Scott, and Westmoreland.The formation of the original church of 1850 wasorganized by Reverend John Wesley Solomon (b. 1822

d.1901). At that time, it was a very plain church; it lackeda steeple, belfry, and choir loft. However, the aisles werecarpeted. There were three aisles in this church. The pewson the left were for the men to be seated; the pews on theright were for the women and children to be seated. Inaddition to a pedal organ, there were cuspidorsthroughout the church, according to Ms. Tommie Waters.The cuspidors, she explained, were there “so that LeeHorne, Joe Sanders, and Dr. William Weems could chewtobacco during church.”
 
The original church building was replaced under theleadership of Jack Reynolds, Chairman of the BuildingCommittee in 1924. Sunday school rooms were addedduring the tenure of Pastor Rev. Paul Duffy, in 1947.Finally, many members of the church volunteered to build a parsonage in 1956. It was not until 1986, under Pastor Rev. Gary Frey, that an indoor bathroom wasinstalled. In 1999 the church was given a “Facelift” of vinyl siding, new windows and a wrought iron railingabove the new tile steps, under the leadership of Chairman Howell Peebles.
 
Inside the church can be found two original pulpitchairs, a cuspidor, a hundred year old Bible, the pulpit,water pitcher, and some books of hymns without musicalnotes. The original pews are still being used; they have been moved into the Sunday school class. This year theClopton United Methodist Church will be celebratingtheir 152
nd
anniversary as a church. According to Mrs.Waters, the Clopton Cemetery is a sacred place in the lifeof the church and the Clopton community. Some of thegraves found there date back to the 1850’s.
HARRY POTTER MARATHON EVENT
 
Our ”Harry Potter” marathon continues on Thursdaysduring October. Popcorn and a drink will be servedfrom 4:15 until show time at 4:30.

The FOL are inviting all who wish to attend tocome and hear Attorney Clayton Davis, Social SecuritySpecialist, speak on Medicare and the importance of Wills, Power of Attorney and Medical Directives. Theevent will take place on Thursday, October 11, 2012,from 2:00PM – 3:30PM, in the Alice Doughty room atthe Library. There will be light refreshments. All arewelcome.

We enjoyed delicious food, good company, andwonderful music provided by Lynn Ivey during our recent program “Not Just Desserts” sponsored by the Ozark Chamber of Commerce and Friends of the library. Many people worked together to make this a successful programand we thank them for their time and talents.The last Saturday in October, the 27th, is Make ADifference Day (MADD). This is a time whencommunities come together as a national day of doinggood, and everyone is encouraged to spend time doing agood deed that makes a difference. This year we needvolunteers for two projects: Vivian B. Adams School andthe Ozark
