The Kindergarteners have been bringing home a book from the school library every Friday. When the children go to the library, I ask them to choose a just right book. I have asked them to use the Five Finger Rule. This means that they read through the first few pages of the book. Each time they are unable to read a word, they put up a finger. If they reach five fingers quickly, then they know that it is too hard for them. On the other hand, if there are no challenge words at all, it may be too easy. They will be great books for you to read with your children. Return to school on Monday, and the students will continue to read them in their book bins. Students who do not return their library book will not be able to check out another book until it is returned.
