To all,The Arizona State Legislature has proposed draconian cuts to the University System thatwould total nearly $243 million, or approximately one-quarter of the entire budget, with atotal reduction of $388 million in Fiscal Year 2010. Such a cut would be absolutelydevastating to the University system which, if passed, would require elimination of Colleges, major lay-offs of faculty and radical hikes in tuition that could easily exceed100%. The University’s Transformation plan was designed to address a very small portion of these cuts, which puts the whole issue into perspective.Your voice and opinions are needed and essential in telling the Arizona State Legislatureand Governor-to-be Jan Brewer about how vital our education is to the state of Arizona.It is quite obvious that these powerful and influential leaders are unaware of theirreparable harm that would be brought to the Arizona economy. It would also becomenearly impossible for lower income and even middle income families to send their children to any of the three state Universities should these ignorant cuts be enacted. As aresult, the Graduate and Professional Student Council feels that immediate action isneeded to ensure that the Arizona State Legislature and the Governor’s Office is madeaware of our opinions.The leadership of Arizona Student’s Association, Associated Students of the University of Arizona (ASUA) and the Graduate and Professional Student Council (GPSC) haveconcluded that immediate action is needed to address the Legislative Budget Cut proposalto Higher Education. They include the following:1) Campus Protests – Tuesday, January 20 at 12:00 pmA massive student protest will take place on the UA Mall in front of theMemorial Student Union. Bring your posters expressing your opinions, wear black shirts to signify the death of higher education and bring as many of your friends as you can. The greater the numbers, the stronger the message.Media members have been invited and will be present to record this event.2) Arizona Board of Regents Meeting – Thursday, January 22 at 1:00 pmThe Arizona Board of Regents needs to know that the students here at theUniversity of Arizona support drastic measures.
