Tsunami + 10:
Exploring the legacy of the Boxing Day Tsunami – and renewing our commitment.
October 2, 2012
What happened
after the camera crews
had gone? After aid organizations had spent the
world’s unprecedented donations
?As the tsunami’s 10
th
anniversary approaches,
what can we learn
 about what was accomplished

and how to do it better next time?
Disaster giving is potent –
for the donations made available and the chance to reshape communities, we need to maximize it!The Dec. 26, 2004 tsunami and quake claimed
230,000 lives
,making it one of the five worst disasters in modern times.Unique among disasters, its death toll was global, taking from
14 nations
.And in a sign of divine irony,
two chronic conflict zones
received a tremendous infusion of aid dollars and personnel.Somehow, both Sri Lanka and Aceh are at peace today.

th
anniversary
This seminal disaster spawned a record
$13.4 billion in global aid
,including $3.1 billion from the US.
My organization handled $5M+ and helped thousands of donors with personalized giving.
Now, we are going back.
Returning to communities
to explore the long-term
legacy of philanthropy
almost 10 years later.And
revisiting contributors
, such as supermodel Petra Nemcova andactor Jet Li, whose lives, too, were transformed.

th
anniversary
We are well on our way after an August 2012
trip to Sri Lanka
.We travelled to the East, where
echoes of both tsunami andconflict
remain loud and present.We found
individual beneficiaries
from our projects, discovering years later how a moment of philanthropy affected their lives. And we examined local civil society and former grantees to learn
what worked well
and what might be done differently – and whatSri Lanka needs today.
