Gregorian Chant, The Roman Liturgy, And the Universal Identity of the Faithful

An undergraduate thesis presented to Dr. Michael Sirilla at the Franciscan University of Steubenville. The culmination of four years of intensive study in Sacred Music and Theology at a school whose current liturgical practice demands further reflection upon the theological foundations of liturgy, music, and ecclesiology. In this essay, I seek to illustrate the role which music plays in expressing a universal Catholic identity. I argue that "a genuine Catholic identity is naturally formed when Christians regularly sing Gregorian Chant in the liturgy. Likewise, Catholic identity is impoverished and diversified whenever Gregorian Chant is either abandoned in the liturgy or exclusively relegated to the choir."
