A stunning visual guide to the history and development of all types of guitars, packed with detailed information and profiling everything from the legendary Martin flat-tops to Gibson's arch-tops guitars and Fender's twelve-string electrics. The Ultimate Guitar Sourcebook is divided by type into nine chapters, each telling the full story of a major type of guitar. It is sub-divided geographically so the reader gets a global picture of guitar making from the United States to the Far East and from Europe to Australia. The introduction examines the development of the world's most popular instrument over the years.

Each one consists ofa very limited run (usually 100) of an ultra-exact copy of arenowned artist’s guitar. It’s like an extreme version of theregular signature-model idea. Examples so far haveincluded Rory Gallagher’s battered Strat, Andy Summers’scareworn Tele Custom, Mary Kaye’sgleaming Blond-body/gold-hardware Strat,Jeff Beck’s early-days Esquire, and YngwieMalmsteen’s bashed-up ’71 Strat. For theClapton Tribute, Guitar Center allowed theCustom Shop access to the guitar so thatFender could nit-pickingly spec this historicStrat for an exacting replica. Just 275 were made, of which185 were sold through Guitar Center and the rest throughFender’s international channels. Guitar Center sold alltheirs in one day, with 106 going in the first two minutes. The suggested retail price was a hefty $24,000 each, witha portion donated to the Crossroads Centre in Antigua andto a new facility in Delray Beach, Florida.Fender Japan was reorganised early in 2005 when anew company, Dyna Boeki, was formed toproduce Fender’s Japanese instr umentsversion of the regular signature-modelidea. Examples so far have included RoryGalla gher’s battered Strat, Andy Summers’scare worn Tele Custom, Mary Kaye’sgleaming Blond-body/gold-hardware.
