The rst presidential debate between incumbent president Barack Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney set a new record in American politics for a lopsided defeat. Romney won handily, the contest (to be generous) wasnt even close. Romneys victory was so overwhelming, a poll taken by CNN after the debate showed that nearly 70% of all viewers felt that Obama not only lost it, but badly. CNNs Polling Director, Keating Holland, put it succinctly, No presidential candidate has topped 60% in that question since it was asked in 1984. The consensus that Romney not only beat but trounced Obama was universal among the mainstream media. Even MSNBC, who openly endorses Obama and makes no secret about it, was up in arms over his lackluster performance. Chris Matthews, their top news anchor, had a meltdown on the air, stunned at how sheepish Obama was. I dont know what he was doing out there. He (Obama) had his head down, he was enduring the debate rather than ghting it. Romney, on the other hand, came in with a campaign. He had a plan, he was going to dominate the time, he was going to be aggressive, he was going to push the moderator around, which he did effectively, he was going to relish the evening, enjoying it. Focused, articulate, commanding, appearing even presidential and armed with a plethora of facts and one liners which seemed to deate Obama by the minute, the president looked like a mere shell of the man who condently steamrolled his way into elected ofce just a few years ago. One of Romneys best (and most factually accurate zingers) was when he pointed out that despite the greatest economic recession since the Great Depression, Obama spent

his rst two years in ofce focused on passing his much hated universal healthcare package now known as ObamaCare. Polls show that most Americans did not like ObamaCare when it became law, and still dont. Romney was right, Obama couldnt defend himself against that charge, and didnt even bother to try. The focus of the debate was of course the economy. Most Americans have said this is their single greatest worry, and no wonder. Under Obama, the unemployment rate has remained above 8% for the longest time of any president in U.S. history. This is not a record to be proud of, it is in fact complete failure. Job growth (as Obama euphemistically calls it) has remained anemic at best. For the rst time in history, more Americans are getting welfare handouts and food stamps each month than are being hired for jobs. Just last week, Americas GDP for 2012 was revised downward, for the third time! It now stands at the frightening level of just 1.7%, and this is being generous, during this recovery as Obama mealy-mouths it. Even the way the Obama administration counts unemployment is bogus, and most Americans know it. His administration never bothers to include those who have either given up looking for work entirely, despite the fact that such people are certainly also unemployed, nor does it count the underemployed. When these inconvenient truths are factored in, Americas real unemployment rate during Obamas tenure stands at 17%, more than double what the ofcially and deliberately misstated number is. Not surprisingly, most Americans now no longer support Barack Obama. His approval rating is hovering down near 40%, which means that his disapproval rating, which is the more important statistic of the two, is nearly 60%. While Obamas apologists will say he saved the economy by passing the stimulus nancial package, most economists (even Democrats) concede that it did not go far enough. Obviously, a solution which does not truly solve the problem it is intended to is no solution at all. Imagine taking medicine that didnt work. One would hardly call it a cure, it would never be deemed a success, unless youre a diehard Obama supporter. Instead of creating the maximum number of jobs theoretically possible, Obama spent billions in taxpayer money on green energy projects, several of which went bankrupt.

With each bankruptcy, such as at rms like Solyndra, thousands of more people lost their jobs. Solyndra made solar power cells, only to be undercut by the Communist Chinese who predictably drove them out of the competitive market. Obama did nothing to protect the company from Chinas predatory price dumping, in fact when the Obama administration ordered solar energy panels to be installed on the roofs of government buildings, it ordered them from the Chinese! This is exactly how one grows ones domestic economy and puts Americans back to work, isnt it? This was another of Mitt Romneys gotcha remarks, it hit Obama right where it hurt most, in the eyes of potential American voters. Romney told the blunt truth when he took Obama to task in the debate for not using the billions of dollars he earmarked for green energy on creating jobs by doing basic, simple things such as hiring more teachers. Romney was spot on concerning this comment. He nailed Obama over the fact that he spent $90 BILLION dollars on green energy projects, half of which went bankrupt, and noted that had this same amount of money been spent on education, he could have hired two million teachers. Two million jobs is signicant. Another area Romney drove home, which Obama did not deny, was his nancial bailout of the banking and nance markets. The Democrats like to brag that they saved the economy and passed tough reforms against bankers and Wall Street. The truth, naturally, is quite different. As Romney and others have pointed out, the Democrats specically declared some of the largest banks to be too big to fail, thus giving them federal (as in taxpayer funded) nancial guarantees, should they need money again. Romney correctly pointed out that this was the biggest kiss yet to the nancial giants, and that the much touted reform deliberately fails to dene exactly what a too big to fail bank really is. There is no criteria listed, no standards dened, this tough measure claimed by the Democrats isnt tough at all. The list of issues Romney hammered Obama on was 90 minutes worth. He was relentless but polite and professional. Obama, not used to being questioned nor really even being vetted by the mainstream media, couldnt defend himself.

The reactions after the debate, when it was clear that Obama had not only lost, but suffered the worst defeat of an incumbent in the history of this event, have been laughable as expressed by the Democrats and liberals. While the Republicans are saying, We told you so, the loony left is saying that Romney cheated and had his facts and one liners secretly written on his handkerchief. This desperate CONspiracy theory is making the rounds on Facebook right now, it is as credible as the nutty claim that Americans never went to the Moon and faked the Apollo landings. According to post debate surveys, Romneys fortunes seem to have picked up. In the crucial swing states of Ohio, Florida, and Virginia, he is now pulling ahead of Obama and is already up by three points. Those polled who declared themselves certain to vote, have now said they will do so for Romney because of what they saw on TV. I was one of the few journalists who went on record years ago saying that Obama will not improve the American economy, and that the measures he was taking were temporary xes (to be generous) that would never deliver on their over-hyped, lofty promises. The United States is now more than 16 TRILLION dollars in debt. While it bitches about Greeces debt, which is only in the billions, America should be so lucky. During Obamas tenure, for the rst time in the USAs history the countrys once AAA+ credit rating has now been downgraded twice. While Obama and the Democrats blame those vile Republicans, this excuse doesnt wash. Failure is failure. When a sports team loses a match, the excuse that other other team was just too good never cuts it, nor should it. Defeat is defeat. To solve the problem and build a true championship team, you get better players, better leaders, ones who can overcome even a superior opponent. You dont blame the other side for your defeat. You take responsibility for your successes and admit your failures, unless youre a Democrat. With the Vice-Presidential debate coming up next, and with VP Joe Bidens undeniable track record of putting his foot in his mouth and saying things which constantly embarrass the Obama administration, (one can easily Google his gaffes), this next round will be extremely interesting.
