Courage takes many forms.

Assess the importance of courage today We have often heard that Man has a strong survival instinct. But over time, I have come to believe that because our society and living conditions have changed, this instinct may have been dulled, and can truly be mustered by those who have courage. Indeed, courage takes many forms and is very important today. We need it to make improvements, realise ideas, stand up for what is right and even work. We need courage to challenge the status quo in order to make improvements in society. Admittedly, being different can be said to be problematic. Those who try to stand out from the rest may be regarded as subversive and are ostracised. But the courage to question authority, and provide sound support for ones beliefs has always been the key to attaining more rights for oneself or others. Recent history is testimony to this. For example ______________________ Without courage, ideas will be but ideas, and not realised. An intelligent person without the courage to act will not get to see how effective his ideas are. Perhaps, one could argue, that the fear of knowing that one is wrong could be the very reason why one chooses to remain passive. To think more positively, one could also argue that visionary ideas should not be acted upon now, but later. The problem with this thinking is that the indefinite later one seeks may never come. Thus, ones ideas remain theory. The events of the day once more reveal that men with ideas have always been bold enough to try and make their ideas work, even it means encountering failure. For example________________________ Moreover, many jobs require courage. Courage and tenacity to pursue the truth is what scientists and lawyers need. Personnel in the security, the armed and civil defence forces, including firefighters and medical staff need courage to defend and save lives. In addition, as unseeming as it is, even salespeople or those who need to make presentations in their line of work, need courage to persuade others, speak in public and face possible rejection.

In conclusion, courage is an important quality. While there are people who can be foolhardy and use their courage to do what is reckless or criminal, the existence of such people does not make courage less important. There is more evidence to suggest that as we move into more volatile times, courage paired with virtue, hold the key to our survival.
