Daniel studiedPsychology at the University o Sussex, an MSc in Neuroscience atOxord and his PhD at UCL. Daniel’sresearch ocuses on gaining a betterunderstanding o how childrendevelop numerical and mathematicalcompetencies.
Dr Ruth Trundley
is the LeadPrimary Maths Adviser or BabcockLDP based in Devon. Ruth taughtor many years in primary schools inDevon and Canada beore joiningthe advisory service where she hasled and developed a variety o research projects and co-authored anumber o books.
Dr Derek Haylock
is anEducation Consultant, Author, andSenior Fellow o the University o East Anglia. Derek is internationallyrenowned or his writing andresearch in mathematics education,he has taught mathematics to allages and established himsel as ahighly respected specialist in theprimary eld.
Disorders o the numerate brain:Developmental Dyscalculia &Mathematics Anxiety
I will present evidence rom both behavioraland brain imaging studies that bothdevelopmental dyscalculia and mathematicsanxiety disorders are associated withdiculties in basic number processing. Iconclude with a discussion o the implicationso recent research on developmentaldyscalculia and mathematics anxiety oreducational diagnosis and remediation.
Missing links: Barriers to understandingearly mathematics
Making connections is at the heart o mathematics but or some children maths isexperienced as discrete, isolated incidents.Starting rom early experiences o counting,I will explore missing links and how tosupport children in developing the links,considering the place o contexts, language,mathematical images and symbols.
Using learners’ errors andmisconceptions in teaching mathematics
I will share examples o how teachersanalyse learners’ mathematicalmisconceptions, errors and proceduralmistakes to inorm their teaching. Iargue that errors are welcome becausethey can promote cognitive confict anddeeper understanding. I will also discusschildren’s risk-taking in problem-solving.
