Director: Guy RitchieRelease Year: 2000
The opening sequence begins with a close upshot of a man in what seems to be a room whichis poorly lit and the artificial light and is used asa spot light. The camera then focuses on the two
men seated in front of the first male who’s face
has still not been seen as his tall figure isemphasised as a high angle shot is used, whichcreates a sense of mystery. Then a voice overbegins, the person speaking seems to be JasonStatham (left) we assume this as there is a closeup shot of him as the voice over continues whichmay suggest that this part of the film is set inthe past as he is not speaking in the presenttime. He introduces himself and then speaks
about “Tommy” who he explains to be his
partner in crime as the camera then has a closeup shot of the man on the right.
As Statham’s voice over continues, the
camera focuses back on to him and itseems as if he is speaking at the presentmoment as all the camera movement is intime with the voice and focuses on thepeople involved in the introduction. This makes the audience wonder whythey are not actually speaking in thepresent tense and creates a sense of mystery. The camera continues tofocus on Statham with a close up shotwhich is uses continuously in thebeginning, this makes the audiencefocus on the people on screen andmakes them seem important in thestory right from the beginning alsothey are wearing smart wear (suits)which emphasises this.
