It is a great honor for me to serve as the Re-lator General at this Synod and I am grate-ful to our Holy Father for this privilege. As we begin our deliberations on the New Evangelization for the Transmission of theChristian Faith, I want to touch on a num- ber of points that I hope will help focus ourdiscussion and provide some themes for re-flection.None of us come to this Synod without pre- vious preparation realized in our own pas-toral ministry, but also supported by the work of the General Secretariat of the Synodof Bishops that produced first the Linea-menta that resulted in suggestions and rec-ommendations from episcopal conferences, synods of the Catholic churches sui iuris, the dicasteries of the Roman Curia, bishops without any episcopal conference and theUnion of Superiors General. The excitement spread asGod’s Son, who is also one of us, announcedthe coming of the kingdom. The invitationto discipleship and a place in the kingdomthat he held out to those who heard him, hecontinues to offer today. This has been truefor 20 centuries. As his message was more
