DRAWING A SPRING IN EARLIER VERSIONS OF AUTOCADEngr Rajendra SalokheB.Tech. (I.I.T.Delhi)
Please view my websitehttp://arutapub.brinkster.net http://www.geocities.com/arutacompIn earlier versions since AutoCAD 2006 since the Helix command was not available itwas a little tough to draw a spring. Though the helix command is introduced in AutoCAD2007 , it will be interesting to see how a spring can be drawn in earlier versions.I assume that while drawing the spring the students have a knowledge of 2D/3DAutoCAD. However the clear steps will be given. We start with a default area of 12x9 . 1] Click on rectangle tool and draw a rectangle of 5x5 size. Command: _rectangSpecify first corner point or [Chamfer/Elevation/Fillet/Thickness/Width]:Specify other corner point or [Dimensions]: @5,52] Extrude the rectangle to height of 5. This cube will be used for reference.Type extrude at command prompt.

Command: extrudeCurrent wire frame density: ISOLINES=4Select objects: 1 foundSelect objects:Specify height of extrusion or [Path]: 53] Click on the ARC tool.Command: _arc Specify start point of arc or [Center]: >>Resuming ARC command.Specify start point of arc or [Center]:Specify second point of arc or [Center/End]:Specify end point of arc:Similarly draw on more arc as shown in the figure of step 4

4] Type ucs at command prompt to change the ucs(user co-ordinate system)Command: ucsCurrent ucs name: *TOP*Enter an option [New/Move/orthoGraphic/Prev/Restore/Save/Del/Apply/?/World]<World>: 3pSpecify new origin point <0,0,0>:5] Click on rotate tool and rotate one arc. Command: _rotateCurrent positive angle in UCS: ANGDIR=counterclockwise ANGBASE=0Select objects: 1 foundSelect objects:Specify base point:Specify rotation angle or [Reference]:6] Draw a small circle at the end of one arc and extrude this circle along the arc.
