INTRODUCTION
A small, dark-brown box, about the size o a thin brick, sits discreetly on a table in my living room. Pickit up by its leather handle, press a button on top, and a door on the ront drops open to reveal a lens ina metal apparatus that’s attached to a retractable bellows. This little marvel is my grandmother’s rstcamera, a No. 2A Folding Pocket Brownie Automatic made by the Eastman Kodak Co. o Rochester, NewYork. My grandather gave it to her or her 17th birthday in 1912, and it still works perectly—when Imanage to track down lm that ts.A century ago, my grandmother’s Brownie—simple to use, small and light enough to carry anywhere—represented the apex o consumer technology. But even the most casual o snapshooters mustunderstand the essentials o photography to take a picture with it. A dial governs the size o an opening(aperture) in the eight-bladed metal diaphragm behind the lens to let light in and expose the lm. Alever oers three ways to control how long this diaphragm shutter remains open. And, to ocus, thebellows extend to a length determined by a scale marking the distance to the photo’s subject.Today, taking pictures is a whole lot easier and more automatic than it was when Grandmom was ateenager. Yet, to get the photos you really want—whether you’re enjoying the incredible convenience o a cellphone camera or exploring the endless capabilities o a digital single-lens refex (DSLR)—you haveto master the same basics: the amount o light coming into the camera at any one moment, how longthe light streams in, and the optical properties o the lens that ocuses that light. The better you controllight and the way your camera captures it, the more satisying your photos will be—and the more unyou can have with photography. This book will help you get there. You’ll nd hundreds o tips or every aspect o photography, romchoosing the right gear to setting up your shots to capturing and enhancing your images. You’ll discoverquick xes or typical situations and longer projects that will challenge your skills and creativity. You’lllearn not just how to best capture the light, but how to shape it or precise pictorial eects. And you’lllearn how to translate the scene you see in your mind’s eye into a nished photograph that you canshare with the world.Every camera, rom my grandmother’s Brownie to the latest device you just ordered online, is reallynothing more than a dark box with a hole on one side and light-sensitive material (lm or a sensor) onthe other. The pictures that you make with it are entirely up to you—and this book will get you startedon that adventure.Miriam LeuchterEditor-in-Chie
