This report highlights the personal stories of the leaders of some of IFC’s inclusive business clients. These clients have developed innovative and successful business models that expand access to goods, services, and livelihoods for poor people, while generating strong financial returns.

Based on interviews with 14 founders and CEOs of IFC client companies, the report identifies a number of lessons on inclusive business, including the need to balance short-term returns with long-term goals and the importance of knowledge of local conditions, needs, and capabilities. The stories also reflect the overarching optimism these leaders share about the future of inclusive business

Foreword
Inclusive economic growth is an essential component in the ght againstpoverty. By creating jobs and improving access to goods and services, it givesall people—not just those at the top o the economic pyramid—a chance toimprove their lives.IFC, a member o the World Bank Group, is a leader in developing andexpanding inclusive business models. Its investment and advice support privatesector rms that are nding nancially sustainable and scalable ways to servethe poor. These inclusive business models integrate poor people as ull eco-nomic partners, bringing new opportunities to the base o the pyramid andshowing how innovative businesses can tap new markets.Over the past eight years, inclusive business models have accounted orabout 7 to 10 percent o IFC’s annual commitments, amounting to more than$7 billion in all. IFC’s work—with more than 300 inclusive-business clients inmore than 80 countries—has helped it reach more than 250 million people. In a world where 4 billion people go without basic goods and services andhave little hope or employment, this work is critical. Companies that bringlow-income producers and consumers into their supply chains are true pio-neers, opening paths or uture prosperity.Further developing these models is a priority or the World Bank Group,or our private sector clients, and or me. Together, we can achieve inclusivegrowth and ulll our mission o poverty eradication.

Leadership Perspective
Eective leaders translate their vision o how the world should look into reality.A growing number o IFC clients are doing just that, developing and expandinginnovative and successul business models that integrate people at the base othe economic pyramid into their value chains. This publication highlights the individuals who are leading some o thesecompanies. Based on interviews, we are able to share their journeys as businesspioneers, their challenges and achievements, and their advice and sources oinspiration. In recent years, IFC has analyzed the inclusive business models o morethan 300 clients. Last year, we published a report highlighting the mostrequent models in IFC’s portolio, the challenges they have in common, andthe results they achieved. We have also published close to 40 case studies. Bysharing knowledge in this way, IFC hopes to provide a resource or inclusivebusiness leaders working in developing economies.I would like to thank the individuals this report highlights or sharing theirstories. They are an inspiration or the next generation o inclusive businessentrepreneurs, and there is much more to be done to create opportunity orpoor people across the world.
