HD DVD BLUE RAY
Blu-ray disc (BD): --- 25/50 GB -Next generation optical disc format. -Developed by blu-ray disc association (which includes Apple, Hitachi, HP, LG, Panasonic, Pioneer, Philips, Samsung, Sharp, Sony) -Wavelength of laser which reads data: 405 nm -Color of laser: Blue-violet which was developed by SHUJI NAKAMURA at NICHIA CORPORATION
and proposed by Toshiba & NEC was introduced to the DVD Forum in November of 2003 and approved as the next-generation DVD format. It was developed to store highdefintion videos to get its full effect for HDTV. This is the only high definition format which is approved by the DVD forum
Comparision
TYPES OF BD:
SINGLE LAYER :
- Can hold data up to 25/27 GB that means 2
THE TECHNOLOGY
Pits : spiral grooves that
run from the centre of the disc to its edges Bumps : other sides of these edges. Track pitch : it is the distance between the two tracks (of pits) on the surface. -------------------------------Disc store digitally encoded data in PITS. --------------------------------
THE TECHNOLOGY
So, in blu-ray disc: Pit size 0.15 microns ( more than twice as small as the pits on DVD ) Track-pitch is : 0.32 microns Laser needed : blue-violet laser (405 nm) Data transfer rate : 36 Mbps
HDDVD
Data is sandwiched b/w two
BIREFRINGENCE
Doesnt suffer from DISC
BIREFRINGENCE TILT Hard coating is placed outside to protect from scratches or fingerprints
Suffer from DISC TILT No such hard coating is placed
ray disc most durable and family -friendly Hard-coating technology provides resistance to: - Finger prints - Marks - Scratches - Dust
Much more ROBUST than todays polycarbonate-
working in a small chemical company, Nichia Chemical Industries, built the first blue laser diode. This uses the GaN(gallium nitride) , in the earlier time blue lasers were large and expensive gas laser instruments and needed high currents and strong cooling.
FEATURES OF BD
With BD we can: Record HDTV without any quality loss Instantly skip to any spot on disc Record one program while watching other on the disc Create playlists Edit or reorder programs recorded on disc Automatically search for an empty space on the disc to avoid recording over a program Access to web to download subtitles and other extra features And many more
better data seek times Shorter to travel for same amount of data results in faster data seek Better for random access of data
THE NAME
The blu-ray name is a combination of blue, for the color of the laser that is used and ray for optical ray.
The e in blue was purposefully left off, according to the manufacturers, because an everyday word cannot be a trademark.
On GAURD
Blu-ray discs are better armed than current
DVDs. They come equipped with a secure encryption system a unique ID that protects against video piracy and copyright infringement.
specification
In HDDVD we are using Blue Violet laser (405nm)
thus reducing the track pitch to 0.4 microns, Which increases the data capacity. The size of the pits is also reduced. It holds a data rate of maximum 36.55 Mbps.
Basic structure
Types of HDDVD
HDDVD-ROM HDDVD-R HDDVD-RW
TYPES OF HD
Single Layer HDDVD(15GB)
Dual Layer HDDVD(30GB) Triple Layer HDDVD(45GB)
its full effect. It supports all the high definition formats such as MPEG-2,VC-1,MPEG-4,AVC.MPEG-2 needs 19.3Mbps. It can give up to data rate 36.55Mbps. It supports video formats up to 1080i,1080p. &HDTV video resolution 1920-1080.
Advantages
Cheaper to produce in the short term when compare to
blueray. The only high definition format approved by the DVD forum. The name itself, HD-DVD, is more consumer-friendly HD-DVDs carry the same basic structure as current DVDs, so converting existing DVD manufacturing lines into HD-DVD lines is supposedly simple. Backed by Microsoft.
disadvantages
HD-DVD simply can't boast the same storage
capacity as Blu-ray.
