feelings.Fellows,werecognizeyourvitalcontributionservingaspillarsandbuildingblocksofthechurch.Elderswhoservewell,whoaredevotedtoGod,themissionofthechurch,thepeopleofGodandwhoseektobetrustworthyandresponsibletothechurchpastorshipareavital,valuabledimensioninthechurches.OnbehalfofMessers.HerbertandTedArmstrongandcertainlyalltheteammembersinCAD,wewishtoconveyour"thankyou"foryourcontinueddedicationandservice!Ithasbeenmyintentionforseveralmonthsnowtowritethisletterdirectedespeciallytoallofyouhavingtheresponsibilitywehavetraditionallyreferredtoas"localchurchelders."Pleasereadthisletterasaheart-to-hearttalkwitheachoneofyoupersonally.Wefeelourmethodsofcommunicationhaveimprovedduringthepastseveralmonths.Yet,inspiteofthis,werealizethatindividualsectionsoftheministrydonotreceivemuchpersonalized,specialcontact.Ourhopeisthatthislettercan

afurtherprocessofimprovementinanotherarea-thistimedirectedparticularlytowardyouchurchelders.Manyofyouhavefromtimetotimewrittenpersonallettersexpressingyourappreciationforthepastorinyourarea,assuringusofyourcontinuedsupport,reportingaboutgeneralconditionswithinthechurch,lettingusinonalittlepersonalnewsplusothertopics.Theselettersfromyouareverymuchwelcomed.MayIpubliclysaythankstoallofyouwhohavebeenthoughtfulenoughtowrite.Ontheotherhand,occasionallywehavereceivedletterswithnegativereports.Thesemayattimesbenecessarysolongastheycomefromtheheartinaproperconstructiveattitudeofservicetoallconcernedandwilldirectlyorindirectlybenefitthechurch.Withoutwishingtomakeunnecessarynoisesaboutanunpleasantsubject,Iwouldliketomakeafewcommentsaboutsomethingwe'vewitnessed,andItrustlearnedfrom,duringthepasttwotothreeyears.Beginningearlyin1973,wesawadramaticintensificationof"brotherreportingagainstbrother."Insomeinstanceselderswererequiredtocontactheadquartersconcerningtheconductoffellowministers.Inasense,theatmospherebecameoneofwatchfulness,caution,suspicionandcriticism.Toanextent,seedssownatthattimearestillgeneratingharmfulattitudesinsomeofourpeer-to-peerrelationships.IwantyoutoknowthatI
understand
thereasonsforsomeofouractionsandreactions.Twoelderstoldmein1973thatwhentheysaweverythingtheyhadcommittedtheirlivestobeingattacked,subtilymalignedanddiscredited,itwaslikeapersonalattackagainsttheirempiricalselves.Also,theyrealizedthatit'snotallthatdifficultwhentheguardisdowntobecomedisorientedandconfused.Thisinturncouldresultinterriblepersonallossoffaith,hopeandpossiblyeveneternallife.So,Idounderstandthenaturalreactiontorespond

wanttobepositive,confidentandproperlytrustingwithintheministry.Wealwaysshouldbelookingforthe
good
inourbrotherandcertainlyinthoseministersappointedtobechurchleadersandpastors.Recentlyitwaspointedouttomethatmanychurchpastorsfeelitisnow"chic"forthemtobedistrusted,disrespected,openlydisagreedwith,etc.I'msureyouchurcheldersalsoexperiencethisbysomeyoucomeincontactwith.Weall
know
therehavebeenabusesofofficeandauthority.Therehasbeentoomuchinvolvementinthepersonallivesofothers.Hopefully,wehavelearnedmanyvaluablelessonsalongtheway.
The
rightuseofresponsibility,orpowerofofficeis,Itrust,oneofthemostvitallessonslearned.
WherethelineofresponsibilitybeginsandendsissomethingwithwhichIthinkmostofushavecometognps.Fellows,weneedtostrivediligentlytodeveloppropertrustandrespect.Theministryneedsurgentlytobetrusted,respected,properlylookedupto-notforwhatthemanisbyandofhimself,butbecauseoftheserious,sober,spirit-ledandGod-ordaineddutyhecarries.Withinthelocalchurchthelocalchurcheldersshouldsettheexampleofproperrespect,attitudeofserviceandacceptancetowardtheassociatepastorand/orpastor.Thedeaconswererequiredtobe.menfulloffaith,willingnesstoserveandgenerallyofgoodreportinpersonalconductandleadership.These
needed
servantswithinthechurchshouldalsobepillarsandleadersintherightrelationshiptowardallmemberswithinthechurchfromthepastortothenewest"babeinChrist."Therehasbeenagreat·dealofmaturingandgrowththathastakenplaceinthechurchduringthepastfewyears.But,IfeartherehasalsobeenanoticeablelossintheareaIhavejusttriedtocover.Let'sallsetourmindsandwillstobuildbackandevenbuildstrongerthebrotherhood,mutualrespectandbondofloveweneedasthe"childrenofGod."NowthatIhavesaidthesethingsIwanttomoveontootherthingswehopeyoufindhelpfulandinformative.Recently,weinCADhaveundertakenthetaskofdefiningindividualjobresponsibilitieswithintheministry.Wehaveofteninthepastbeenrequestedbychurcheldersto
