Hawai’i is a beautiful place, but its beauty masks the fact that it is the most unsustainable state in America.
Hawai’i imports 90% of itsfood (most of it processed, unhealthy, and/or genetically modified), and burns oil for about 90% of its electricity. As a result, Hawai’i spends $8billion a year to purchase foreign oil, would run out of food in 3 days if the boats stopped coming, and has high rates of childhood obesity andother public health epidemics. This kind of economy creates mostly service industry jobs, leaving Hawaii’s residents without many good career opportunities. But all signs indicate that the state and its residents are ready for a cleaner, healthier economy...
and that’s where you come in!

You are an “impact investor”
In the game, you invest money in sustainablebusinesses to make money and make adifference. Align skilled workers andentrepreneurs who have the know-how to startsustainable businesses and invest money to getthem started! In the game, you’ll find opportunitiesfor investment in renewable energy, clean tech,sustainable food, green building, recycling,ecotourism, and much, much more!
You invest in “Green Businesses”
In this game (as in real life), there are greatopportunities to invest in businesses thathave environmental, social and financialbenefit. By investing in a car sharingservice (above), for instance, you’rehelping reduce Hawaii’s traffic, pollution,and dependence on imported fuel. Youalso create green jobs and make a tidydividend ($15,000 per turn).

Win the game by creating the greatest benefit for the “triple bottom line”: people, planet and profit!
Your success will be measured on five metrics:
how much money you make,
how many green jobs you help create,
how much dirty energy (barrels of oil) you displace,
how much local, organic food your businesses produce(reducing imports of cans of “FOOD”),
how much less waste is generated (reduction of dumptrucks).Your strategy may be to build a balanced portfolio or to focusyour game strategy on a few of the metrics...but just try to geta better
score than the other players!
